He awoke to movement. Hands slowly creeping around his waist, his body being pulled gently backwards against a broad chest. 

Groaning softly, he sighed, eyelids flickering at the sensation of warm breath on his neck, feather-light kisses pressed into his bare shoulder. Warmth burst over his body, and without thinking about it, he arched his back a bit, tangling his legs with the other man’s.

“James,” he mumbled, still keeping his eyes closed, his focus on the way large, calloused fingers methodically traced over his hip bone; exposed, since his shirt had shifted in the night, “it’s got to be past two AM.”

“Three-thirty,” James answered, and Regulus was surprised to hear something vulnerable in his tone.

Quickly, he turned in the other man’s arms, catching his eye. “What is it?” he asked, straining to understand his expression in the dark.

“Just a nightmare,” James whispered. “I–I worry, sometimes. About losing you. That maybe, someday, you’ll find someone else, or…”

Regulus couldn’t help it. He let out a little, derisive laugh, rolling his eyes. “James. Have you seen how disgustingly in love with you I am? It’s mortifying, actually. You’ve made me soft, and I hate how much I don’t hate it. Your combination of annoyingly stupid pickup lines and ridiculously idiotic antics with your friends got my attention, and I am hooked. I’m not going anywhere. I promise.”

The arms wrapped around him tightened before loosening again. “Alright. I love you, Reg.”

“I love you more, Jamie.”

So what if I cry

ok but timebomb(ish) jegulus au thoughts where james gets his hands on a time-turner after he finds out regulus has the dark mark, but he doesn’t know what he’s doing and the time-turner is a little wonky so it ends up sending him to an alternate universe instead of back in time, and in this alternate universe regulus isn’t a death eater and the brothers don’t hate each other and so many of james’ friends are still alive and happy, but james can’t really be happy because he knows that in his universe the worst of the war is beginning to unfold and more people will die if he doesn’t go back, and he’s learned something valuable to help them win the war back home, so he forces himself to jump back to his time period so he can save the people he knows and loves, but this means he has to leave regulus behind in this alternate universe and when he goes back to his time, has has to duel regulus during a battle and his heart just breaks because he knows that in some other universe, they’re in love and happy, and regulus had more of a choice, and this isn’t at all the way it had to be
