I feel my eyes well up. For the first time, I am unable to withhold my tears.

“If…if we hadn’t met that day. Would things have been…different?”

Runehn stands before me, illuminated by the lights of Amaurot. He seems much older in this moment. Decided.

“No, I don’t think so.”

A small smile graces his face as he turns from me.

“If we hadn’t met back then, I’m certain I still would’ve sought you out. You are, after-all, my beloved sister”.

I feel my breath hitch. He steps away. My voice won’t make a sound.

Runehn’s voice echoed through the area as we made our way toward him. From this distance, I could just make out Emet’s voice. Mocking, cruel.

“Such a compatible vessel. What a shame you lack resilience”

Gritting my teeth, I pushed myself harder, faster. If we didn’t reach them in time, what would Emet do to Runehn?

“Was it not you who agreed to aid me? Now you kneel here, barely useful”.

Runehn screams again, the sound shooting fear down my spine.

“Brother!”

I break the threshold first, legs aching and lungs constricting desperately for air. Before me, Emet holds Runehn’s throat in a vicegrip.

It had been some time since last I’d set foot here. For all the things we’d accomplished, it felt somewhat hollow.

“Are you well my friend?”

Ardbert stepped into my field of vision, brow furrowed. These last few days he had shown growing concern for me. I allowed him a grateful smile but waved away his concerns.

“Come now, you know there’s no reason to worry for me”.

I stepped past him and began my path toward the markets. Behind me, I heard him sigh.

“You’ve told me that many times, though it never stops me doing so”.
