"A strange scent is all over your body, seems like you’re possessed by something” - Girl’s Day Pixels as spores spread unaccountably, forming spheres and constellations linked by vital but inconsequential swags. One day, while adjusting the satellite dish that provides her family with the daily news and soap operas, Kimlin Taeyang came across a different signal. Synchronized movements and disembodied metallic voices, Girl's Day, one of hundreds of Korean K-pop bands, materialized on the television screen. Kimlin is just a regular 19-year-old Ethiopian in the city of Awassa, several hundred kilometres south of Addis Ababa. She enjoys swimming and hanging out with friends and aspires to a career in health science. Since making this discovery, she has devoted herself to learning all of the lyrics to her favourite K-pop songs and she and her friends avidly consume whatever of this foreign culture they are able to access.Possessed by the spirit of fandom, mimesis ushers in a new self-definition. Even Kimlin's Facebook alias has been adopted in part from her favorite star, Taeyang. Meanwhile, all around Awassa the fresh cement poured daily offers a mechanical rhythm. The China Communications Construction Company credits itself with having paved "The First Road in Ethiopia." Its mapping supposes that important destinations lie elsewhere and can be reached by logical route. Swaying oblong shadows cast by red and green LED palm trees attend this infrastructural expansion. A landscape flickers: artificial species generating new life forms. In a porous city many roads lead outward, but few find direction in the unknown. Ringing two times strong, the final lyrics of Girl's Day's "Something" plea indeterminacy: "Are we over? Are we over?" The story on Occupy Central and the Umbrella revolution of Hong Kong seems to have fizzled out of international press recently. It is happening though, and the centre of Hong Kong's financial district is still very much in the hands of students protesting for democracy. It feels peaceful walking through the demonstration area. A space usually filled with the roar of car engines and the smell of emissions has been replaced with the soft hum of people chatting and the wind whistling through the skyscrapers. The protestors have made the highways that run through the city their own space filling it with tents, art exhibitions and areas for the kids to do their homework. It is otherworldly, and totally inspiring.
