Moving Image and Audio Relationship
In this essay I am going to be discussing the relationship between the moving image and audio in our short drama film ‘Tainted’.
In my opinion I think it always important that whatever audio you use for a short film it must always go with the genre of the film. Secondly I feel that the music and the image must have an understanding towards the audience. The type and style of image that we captured during our project were very dark to make give out an intriguing but mysterious style towards the story to keep the audience interested.
The ambient music that was used during our project was called Samsara by Ocean of Wisdom. My overall thoughts were the music was very dark and is the specific typical music of a short drama film, dark, mysterious and eye opening towards the audience. Secondly the song builds tension towards the drama as it starts off quiet and then becomes louder as soon as the tension builds up. The track starts low at the beginning of the scene where Evangeline looks into the mirror, however towards the end where George grabs onto Evangeline the music gets louder which then builds up the tension towards the audience, the clip then progresses which shows a flashback of when Evangeline was raped by George. Visually this made the image look really effective however I felt that a few SFXs could have been added into the scene for example when Evangeline was sitting in the corner upset I felt there could have been an SFX of her crying which could of explained more of her emotions vocally.
I think that the music we selected as a group was very good and fitted straight in with the genre of the drama, however if there was any changes I would make it would be more dialogue from the actors, the reason for this is because I felt that the storyline would be more effective towards the audience. The disadvantages of the relationship towards the relationship of the moving image and sound was that when watching the drama I noticed that whilst there was dialogue in the sequence I could hear the backing track being played whilst the dialogue whilst the actresses were still talking. The solution that Simon could have done to overcome that problem was to reduce the volume of the backing track audio so there would have been no interruptions and clashes between the two.
Overall I felt that the music Simon mainly chose for our short drama was chosen very wisely as I felt that the music that was chosen had that one aim which was to create an atmosphere towards the audience. However the only thing I didn’t like was that there was small SFX such as the last scene where there was no SFX of Evangeline crying would have made a more understanding of the drama. Overall I thought the music and the message we sent across towards the audience in a way was achieved.

Newsroom Evaluation
In this Evaluation I am going to be writing about my experience within working in the newsroom. I will be mentioning about the roll I took on throughout the day and mentioning the advantages and disadvantages of the experience and what I would change if doing this task again.
On the day of the newsroom task, I was placed on undertaking the role of working on the autocue. The role of the autocue is where you are using a computer that contains the script, my job was to scroll the script both up and down following the pace of the speech of the news reporters.
I felt that the day and project went well overall after a few run through sessions this made me feel more confident that I knew what I had to do to achieve the task. There was a few problems during the task as I felt ill during the session where I had to step down and give my role to Samantha where I then took over to teaching her how to use the autocue equipment which she picked up easily.
If there was any changes I would make next time if I did this task again I would change different roles the reason why I would change roles is because I want to have more experience with different roles working in the newsroom. Overall I found this project very enjoyable and creative.

Andreas Essay: What is great editing?
In this essay I will be writing the answer to the question “What is Great Editing”. I will also be mentioning the definition of video editing including the workflow of video editing, the role of the editor and finally what goals the editor has to achieve when working in the post production process.
Video Editing is a process which involves the manipulating numerous amounts of film footage to create a completed sequence. Editing is also part of the post production process which also involves colour correction, sound mixing and exporting the edit.
The role of the editor is always taken place in the post production phase; after the production task has been completed they are in charge of making adjustments and creating a perfect story using the footage that has been collected. Creating the story is a very important part as it needs to make sense but most importantly it is specialized to manipulate the audience’s emotions. Secondly the backing that is being used must always stick to the subject and follow the rhythm of the beat which is where the editor makes options and points out areas of confusion. Secondly the editor is always working closely with the director where the director points out ways to achieve the best results as possible. Editors can edit from a range of different projects this includes Feature films, music videos and advertisements.
There are many steps which an editor must take in order to achieve its goals..
They must decide on choosing the best footage in order to edit. Whether it is creating titles or even looking for a good introduction or an editing to the story. Normally there are more than one take to every scene its just choosing the best take to edit.
Creating a flow such as explaining a story or providing information, in this step the edit must flow properly in order to make sure this goal is achieved. Also the visuals must flow with the pace of the music. This process is taken before you begin to cut your edit.
Once the editing is complete the next task is to colour correct your edit, in this process this is where the editor is in control to control the image of the edit. This is to make sure that the style has a natural professional looking edit. It is always to make sure your edit does not look amateur.
A film editor has a lot of responsibilities whilst working on a project. Firstly they have to transcode and sync all of the audio that they then need to assemble the footage onto the timeline where they then make a story that is ordered by the director. They are also aiming to bring something to life with the footage to create a story that is specifically designed to entertain the audience.
The key to make a successful editor is that you must always keep the audience entertained by enjoying the story. The editor has failed if the audience notice any editing.
The difference between editing on documentaries, commercials and feature films is that these style of videos have different messages to send to the audience watching the videos. Documentaries and feature films are specialised to have the power to manipulate the audience’s emotions and feelings whereas commercials have a message or unique selling point to spread the word to the audience.
In my opinion great editing is all about telling the story visually. Secondly the footage that is features must always follow the beat of the backing track, which makes the edit more eye gazing. When I have watched different projects such as corporate videos, music videos and interviews I have noticed that during interview shots there are always, cover shots and cutaways being shown within the edit, In my opinion using a variety of cutaways and cover shots is an advantage because it is a technique that is designed to keep the audience gazed for a long period of time, so that they enjoy whatever they are watching.
Secondly I feel that it is also important that you trigger the audience’s emotions. This goal only works by making sure that the stories composed well and choosing the correct backing track to go with the story as well as the visuals. When you are using an interview in your edit it is always key to make sure the audio for the interview is louder than the backing track, what if the audience couldn’t hear any dialogue during the interview? The outcome this would have on the target audience would think this is poorly edited.
In conclusion I believe that there is no right or wrong way in editing. Editing is always believing what you think is right, as long as the editor is happy with the work he is produced there is a high possibility that no matter how good the edit is you will always please the audience you aim towards.

Director of Photography Essay
Wally Pfister:
In this essay I will be writing about a famous director of photography. The points I will be mentioning in the essay I will be writing about the technical, creative and psychological impact of his work as well as mentioning about the equipment he uses from camera, lighting and sound equipment.
The director of photography I will be writing about in this essay is Wally Pfister. Born in Chicago but raised in New York City. His influence in starting to work in the film industry began at 11 years old where a film called Shamus was being filmed in his neighbourhood. Since then he began shooting home films where he used a 8mm lens, since he left school he began working as a freelance cameraman.
Beginning his cinematography career in 1991 working on feature films. He has mostly worked on projects with Christopher Nolan and gaffer Corey Goreyak on numerous occasions; his breakthrough film working with Christopher Nolan was Memento, which was released in 2000.
The equipment that Pfister has used has developed from the years he has been working as a cinematographer. Pfister began his trade in the 1980s, and still does the job today. During the 1980s he shot films using VHS video cameras and has then developed as the years have gone by. When he shot The Dark Knight and Inception he used IMAX cinema cameras. The reason why Pfister uses these cameras in particular is because it’s where he films on a high resolution where he also shoots on a large format. Pfister regularly uses a 70 mm camera for filming; when he was working on Inception he used a 65 mm, all of Pfisters camerawork is mainly handheld and holds the camera onto his shoulder. This technique is used to make the audience feel entwined with the actor’s feelings and emotions. Secondly it makes the camerawork and the film have a more realistic feel to the sequence. When Pfister was working on the Dark Knight in the opening scene of a bank robbery he follows the action by using holding the camera on his shoulder the reason he uses this technique is because of the realistic affect it has which makes it look like the he is being involved in the moment. Secondly when the robbers are inside opening the vault the camera pans sideways this is another way where the cinematography makes the audience enticed into the action that is specialised to put the audience at the edge of their seat.
Pfister has used other equipment during production, example in Inception during the hotel lobby scene which he rotated 360 degrees, the equipment he used a dolly to capture the footage. During the filming stage process Pfister made sure that the camera was made to move as normal, the track that was used to follow the sequence of the action was hidden under the carpet, the outcome of placing the track underneath the carpet is due to making sure the actual track is not visible in the shot.
Secondly many of Pfisters different films noticeably his camera movement changes in different films that he has worked on, the reason for using different techniques is because it strengthens the script and also brings attention to the story, he mentioned in an interview the reason he does this, he said “What’s really important is the story, None of it matters if it doesn’t support the story.
Regards of using lighting Pfister only tends to use one style of lighting to his pictures, we notice that his lighting is very soft. On the films that he has worked on the lighting shown in his films make the picture look more realistic, the reason is he uses a key light and dims the casters to 50% he uses this to provide a glow so that the shadow is not too dark.
The psychological impact of Pfisters style is also shown in his filming, one of his films he worked on Memento we notice in the scene of where a man injects his wife three times before she is killed. Pfister uses this technique by changing the shot each time she says “Harold its time for my shot”. He starts off by mid shot from the start of the scene and then develops into an extreme close up where the camera zooms in onto the wife, as she is about to die. You also notice that the actors he has filmed in his projects that the framing is always central.
Pfisters style of creating effects for example during the zero gravity scene in Inception that was filmed at a studio in California. The hotel lobby was interior was designed in a tube and then rotated 360 degrees. Pfister used a dolly to film the footage. However the actual scene was not filmed in CGI. The whole scene took three weeks just to get it right, many adjustments had to be made to make sure that the shot was perfect. For example the hallway had to be adjusted so that the camera was firmly locked onto the ground so the camera did not move. Pfister designed this technique to make sure that the audience only see the action, to get the scene right the actors had to keep running whilst the tunnel was rotating, also the actors involved in the scene were hung on wires which were supported by rigid poles.
In conclusion I have learnt that Wally Pfister uses numerous of different camera techniques and also different types shots that explain the story the film secondly the style of shots and the storytelling psychologically manipulates the audience’s emotions. Many of the projects he has worked on such as Inception, The Dark Knight and Memento all have a different outlook in regards to cinematography and storytelling.
The set up of the zero gravity scene they made the corridor work by using eight concentric rings to create the interior.
During the Memento scene Poetic Justice the camera zooms shot by shot when the insulin is shown it zooms in each time it is shown. This is shown to represent a climax is about to develop, which leads into someone dying.

SECOND YEAR-Unit 16 Film and Video Editing-Final Essay
“What’s the definition of great editing?” is a question we get asked with some regularity. It’s not as obvious as, say, identifying beautiful camera work. And it also depends what kind of video you are talking about. A documentary-style editor is probably going to have a different skill set than someone who works on commercial or music videos
Reflect on that and write a 800 words essay on what is video editing for you , what does a video editor do and what kind of skills are required to be a professional editor.
