ok since i've guided people through using libgen a few times now, i'll make a post about it. it's super easy actually, i just think the interface intimidates people.
the interface isn't as nice as z-lib's but i honestly find it easier to get around libgen, i guess because i've been using it longer. so don't get intimidated
here's the search, self-explanatory. you really don't have to change anything unless you wanna see everything available from a specific author, publisher, series, etc. i don't actually know what "the column set default" means and that has never prevented me from finding what i need lol.
the non-fiction/sci-tech and fiction categories are exactly what they sound like...sort of. i've found that if i'm looking for creative nonfiction (e.g. a memoir), i'm more likely to find it under "fiction" than "non-fiction/sci-tech". poetry books are under "fiction" as well.
now let's search. mike davis died recently and i'm interested in checking out his books, so i'm going to search for his book city of quartz: excavating the future in los angeles, which is nonfiction. just "city of quartz" is a good search term, since it's a pretty unique name for a book.
sorry if you can't see this too well, i've taken a screenshot of a "mirrors" section to highlight it (i'll get into that in a second) but this search results page is just a list of the files that fit my search. libgen lists the author, title, publisher, year, page count, language, file size, file extension (this is important if you're picky like me--i like epubs for personal use, but when i was in grad school i needed pdfs to reference consistent page numbers). any information that isn't available (e.g. some of the page counts here) will be blank. the mirrors are what you really want here.
books from libgen aren't all torrents (usually a torrent link is AN OPTION but it's an option i've never taken in this case, it's easier for me to just download files directly), but if you've ever torrented anything, you're probably familiar with the term "mirror" in this context. if not, a mirror is a copy of a file hosted on a given server. in other words, these three "mirrors" are just the same file hosted in three different places, if one doesn't work, you can try another. i've actually never had an issue where i've had to check different mirror links, but because libgen's mirror links are often from zlib, i imagine that'll be different now.
anyway, you can either click one of the mirrors listed on the search page, or click title of the book, which will take you to a page like this, which also has a selection of mirrors:
the first three links are the most relevant to you if you're not interested in downloading a torrent. again, these are the same file, just in different locations. so i'll click "this mirror" and that'll take me to the download page for the file hosted on this site. if you'd clicked #1 of the numbered mirrors for this particular version of city of quartz on the search results page, it'd be the same result
see that big "GET" link at the top? that's the download link. just click it and the file will start downloading. boom. easy!

since everybody’s talking about south korea’s mandatory military service because of BTS, now seems like a great time to say that forced conscription is always morally wrong, and 90% of the world’s imprisoned conscientious objectors are south korean men who refused to join the military. despite the UN, human rights groups, and the south korean general public saying a mandatory draft with no alternatives is unethical, the current far-right administration and their new incel president have said they will be making LESS exemptions in the future because of declining birth rates.
the choices for south korean men are literally: join the military for 18 months, flee the country before they’re age 24-ish (they don’t let men who haven’t served yet leave the country once they’re around that age, because of the possibility of them fleeing), or go to prison for 3+ years, where they’re given prison labor so it’s like they’re “serving” south korea anyway. the south korean government also keeps a public database of draft dodgers, assumedly so they can be publicly shamed for the rest of their lives (and it affects future employment, of course).
currently the only exemptions are for “cultural merit” (olympic athletes, asian game winners, classical musicians and dancers, etc, hence why people thought BTS would fit in this category because it’s all about who brings prestige to south korea internationally, and BTS literally accounts for 1% of south korea’s entire annual GDP), mentally and physically disabled men, certain STEM programs where they can work as engineers instead of serving, firefighters, and some extreme examples like “this guy is the only doctor in a small town” or “this guy’s wife just died and there’s nobody else available to raise their young kids” — and it’s a big open secret that the sons of wealthy businessmen and chaebols mysteriously always get exempted for one reason or another, of course.
the cultural merit exemption rule was written back in the 1960s, before kpop and kdramas and all that ever existed, so in the last decade or so, a lot of people have been calling for an expansion of who gets exempted and how that rule’s defined, while others say giving celebrities special treatment is unfair. i don’t know if i even have an opinion on this because i’m so anti-military i’m just like.. exempt every man, dissolve the military, fuck it all — but: in the past, enlisted celebrities like kpop idols and actors have faced such extreme levels of bullying, sexual harassment (including other soldiers taking pictures of them in the public showers to sell online), and more, to the extent that just a few months ago, shinee’s taemin was transferred to a public service role because of how much the harassment and bullying he was facing was affecting his mental health.
the south korean military is literally known for its bullying, hazing, violent homophobia, corruption and favoritism with superior officers, high suicide rates, and more — but i digress. fuck the military and fuck the south korean government :) not for BTS, but for every south korean man forced to serve a country that does not give a fuck about them
#this is really enlightening#I didn’t know about the harassment thing for idols that’s terrible#I know a friend who gave up his Korean citizenship#because he didn’t want to do his military service

meal ideas!
low energy ("do not ask me to do any prep work at all, so help me god")
mozzerella cheese wrapped in pepperoni ("pizza tacos"!)
hummus and pretzels or naan (putting the naan in the microwave for like 10 seconds...heavenly)
canned chili (with shredded cheese and sour cream if you have it! boom done!)
instant miso soup (warm and lovely!)
cheese and cured meat, olives, canned fish, crackers, dried fruit, or whatever easy "charcuterie" type items you like
alternate bites of apple and spoonfulls of peanut butter (mixing honey or chocolate chips to the peanut butter is my favorite)
a "deconstructed sandwich": bites of lunch meat, pickles, cheese, cherry tomato, etc (I love roast beef and white cheddar for this)
yogurt and granola or fruit
medium energy ("I'll boil water but don't ask me to chop shit")
boiled eggs and fresh veggies (put a little salt on top of the eggs for pizzaz!)
buttered noodles (take it up to level 10 and add roasted garlic; takes 30 mins in an oven, only one swoop of the knife required)
baked potato with toppings (I like cheese, bacon, broccoli, green onion, and sour cream)
quesadilla (add some canned beans, cilantro, or avocado!)
pot roast (requires a lot of time but not a lot of actual work. I love it with peas!)
cuban sandwich (bread, swiss, pickle, mustard, ham... my favorite thing to panini-ify by far)
pan-fried tofu with scallion sauce (this sauce goes well with everything and tofu is no exception)
pancakes or waffles! (I love mine with jam)
ham, pickle, and cream cheese roll-ups
fried eggs (with toast and lots of butter...so comforting)
fruit smoothie (bananas, frozen strawberries, yogurt...or whatever!)
I hate salad but could write essays on this copycat olive garden salad (throw it in a bowl! chopping required if you use onion)
high energy ("I don't mind chopping some things up!")
stuffed shells with spinach
chicken and roasted garlic (oh my god.....one of my all time favorites)
beef tacos (I like mine with cilantro and onion, and when I'm feeling especially high energy I love a tomatillo salsa)
chicken alfredo
tom kha gai (a thai soup and my absolute favorite! you just need access to galangal)
lasagna! (freezes well and then boom! low energy meal for later)
pad thai! (not as hard as you'd think, as long as you have access to tamarind paste!)
potstickers! (this is a lovely group activity if you want to cook with housemates!)
rice and beans
bang bang shrimp (ogughfhgfuh I love it. you can also do bang bang tofu!)
minestrone soup (so many nice veggies!)
fried rice (put whatever you have on hand in there! broccoli, peas, carrot, and beef is my favorite combo)
broccoli cheddar soup
other tips:
whenever you think of a meal you'd like to make, take 3 seconds to google search it, take a screenshot of the image results, and put it in a "food ideas" folder. instant visual menu!
if you're on instagram, there are a bajillion different recipe accounts that post videos! a few of my favorites: jipsoon_kitchen, eatwitzo, cordandthekitchen, chungeats, tiffy.cooks, two_plaid_aprons

the meaning of life is summed up in the story elmer bendiner tells about how when he was a pilot the second world war, his plane was hit with a barrage of anti-aircraft fire from the nazi forces but the crew survived. and how everyone was saying it was a miracle until they investigated the shells that got in the fuselage and found there was no explosive charges in any of them. in one they found a note scribbled in czech, written by the person who had been forced to manufacture the shells, and it just said ‘this is all we can do for you now’.
