I'm positive this has been thought of before but I just remember it:

Me and my companion had discussed, while rewatching supernatural, that if Adam had been written in along with Sam and Dean; he could've been Gabriel's vessel.

The parallels were too strong. Gabriel didn't want his brothers fighting against each other, and has tried to stop them. Adam would've been the one to step in-between Sam and Dean whenever they fought. Idk, some ideas.
