Protests in Minnesota after police shooting of Daunte Wright
Hundreds of people protested Sunday night after a Black man in Minnesota was shot by a police officer and died following a traffic stop.
The shooting happened Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn Center, a Minneapolis suburb of about 30,000 people. The city is about 10 miles from where former police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for the killing of another Black man, George Floyd
Around 2 p.m. local time (3 p.m. ET), police said they were trying to take a man into custody after learning during a traffic stop that he had outstanding warrants.
The man got back into his vehicle, and an officer shot him, police said. The man then drove several blocks before striking another vehicle, police said.Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said police and medical personnel attempted life-saving measures following the crash, but the man died at the scene.
Protesters gathered Sunday evening and marched toward the police department, leading to what the city’s mayor described as “growing civil unrest.” Aerial footage from showed several police cars around the Brooklyn Center crash site swarmed by crowds.
The state deployed the Minnesota National Guard, and Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott issued a curfew until 6 a.m. Monday (7 a.m. ET).
Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, told her 20-year-old son called her as he was getting pulled over.“He said they pulled him over because he had air fresheners hanging from the rearview mirror,” the mother said, crying.
“A minute later, I called and his girlfriend answered, which was the passenger in the car, and said that he’d been shot.”“He didn’t deserve to be shot and killed like this,” Wright said.

okay, you guys know i never engage in online discourse unless I really think it’s important to say. but i’m sick and tired of seeing these pro-AO3 posts that willfully misread what people are annoyed about. people are not unaware or annoyed about the fact that websites cost money to maintain. people are not unaware or annoyed about the fact that websites that do not run ads must ask for donations. instead, here is a short list of the many things people are annoyed about:
– the fact that thousands of people are choosing to donate to AO3 instead of any of the very desperate causes that are currently going on, and that many of these are the same people who pay lip service to caring about these causes
– the fact that AO3 asks for money to maintain its website and yet has been in Beta mode for 12 years, as well as failing to meet many of the very important requests by users
– the fact that people are saying “well its better than anywhere else sweaty (:” as though AO3 cannot be criticized as long as it is marginally better than the next best option
–the fact that AO3 has received over 5 times the amount of money it requested and yet has not announced plans to redistribute the extra
–the fact that thousands of people decided to donate to a website that systematically fails to address the racist content and child pornography it hosts
–the fact that AO3 and the OTW as a whole have shown time and time again that they do not care about fans of colour, and that fans of colour who speak up about this are accused of promoting censorship for wanting to be respected the fact that by their own admission, it took them years of receiving requests to even begin working on a block feature
the racism and the child pornography holy shit you supercilious assholes people know things cost money but they get annoyed when that money goes to excusing godawful shit

How did I not hear about France banning hijabs? What’s going on?
long story short, there’s legislation in the process of being passed that would
ban girls under 18 from wearing any form of religious head covering in public, and although it’s obviously aimed at muslim women, it would also affect other faith groups that practice similar forms of modest dress
ban islamic swimwear in schools and public (there is already a modest swimwear ban in place at public beaches, this just extends it)
ban mothers wearing hijab from entering schools or participating in school field trips or extra curriculars
ban the slaughter of halal poultry - the cheapest and most easily accessible form of meat protein for the muslim community
extend school hijab bans to universities
prevent muslim women from choosing healthcare providers based on gender (which many muslim women prefer to do, since many exams require removal of clothing, etc)
ban muslim parents from homeschooling
force halal markets to sell pork and alcohol or face closure
ban foreign flags at weddings
