Hi everyone! Now that the insane heat wave is over, I'm back and I have a new song for you. This is Cielito Lindo, a popular traditional song from Mexico. I'm sure most of you will recognize this beautiful melody. I really enjoyed learning this uplifting little piece, and I hope you enjoy listening to it! The full piece is up on my YouTube channel — link in bio. #classicalguitar #cielitolindo #Mexico #fingerstyleguitar #pdxmusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ9l1lYhWHL/?utm_medium=tumblr

Amores Perros is one of the great films of all time, in my opinion. And the movie’s haunting theme song has stuck with me ever since I first saw it some 20 years ago. There are 3 main things that make this piece great when learning to play it. The first is good vibrato. Second is an awareness of silence and an allowance of and listening to the notes as they die out slowly. And third is an emphasis of dissonance, and the pain it can embody, alongside an appreciation of its melancholy resolution. This is an easy piece to play the correct notes. But a focus on the above three points is what will make your interpretation of it a poignant and moving reflection of the film and the struggles of poverty and violence in Mexico City. My apologies for the poor sound quality. But you can check out my YouTube channel in the coming weeks to see a full, highly-produced video! New video going up on my channel tomorrow morning at 8am PST! El no noi de la mare is a famous Catalan folk song transcribed for classical guitar by the barcelonan virtuoso Miguel Llobet. During this lockdown, better times in Barcelona have been on my mind quite a bit, so it felt apropos to post this. Working on some new music this morning! Albéniz has always been one of my favorite Spanish composers, so I decided to use some of this free quarantime to arrange and learn some new pieces of his. I’m always genuinely surprised at how much I enjoy arranging music! Hopefully this will be ready for a recording in a few weeks. 😊🎶 . . . . . . . #guitar #classicalguitar #classicaguitarist #spain #albeniz #musescore #arranging #classicalmusic #pdx #pdxmusic https://www.instagram.com/p/B_IuqFzhtAT/?igshid=1ntdxq31xchxb

Isaac Albeniz is widely considered one of the greatest -- if not THE greatest -- composer to come out of Spain. He was a virtuoso pianist and friends with many of the other famous composers and performers of the time, including the renowned Francisco Tarrega. Although Albeniz composed for piano, Tarrega took some of Albeniz's pieces and transcribed them for guitar. And upon hearing them for the first time on this different instrument he exclaimed that he thought they sounded even better on the guitar, as though they had somehow been intended for it.
I also always thought that Albeniz's music was best expressed on the native Spanish instrument of the guitar, and Granada, in particular, holds a special place in my heart. It is the premiere piece that I performed for the panel of judges in my audition to get into Sevilla's Conservatorio Superior. The thumbnail image I have selected for this video is of my first trip to Granada, the year before I was to begin studying in the conservatory. In the photo I am standing inside of the Alhambra, undoubtedly Spain's most important architectural structure. There is no piece of music that more reminds me of meandering through its gardens and contemplating its ponds and fountains as the sunlight refracts off of the waters surface and plays upon the intricate carvings and designs of the building.
Thank you to Max Sipe for letting me use his workshop for recording. He's an amazing guitar builder located in Portland, OR. https://www.sipeguitars.com/

Sometimes when I give concerts, I like to take requests. Not too long ago, somebody requested this piece as an encore, and I had to tell them that I, unfortunately, didn't know it. But a few days later that changed. And I loved learning this piece so much that I wanted to share it with all of you! This is a truly iconic piece of music that was first arranged for the guitar by the maestro, Leo Brouwer. And in this recording, Portland luthier, Maxwell Sipe, was gracious enough to lend me one of his beautiful spruce guitars. You can visit his website here: https://www.sipeguitars.com/

The Spanish heritage of guitar is among my favorite aspects of the instrument. And this piece feels particularly emblematic of that Spanish style.

"El Negrito" is a short and simple piece, characterized by its gorgeous melody, which he wrote for his son, Luis Augosto. This is a great piece for intermediate and even beginner players!

Adelita is one of Tarrega's most popular pieces amongst guitarists of all levels. It is short, charming, and relatively simple at first listen. But Adelita actually has a few sections that the novice guitarist will find quite difficult. In particular, one must possess a strong left hand and pinky finger in order to clearly articulate the slurs used throughout the piece, as well as to hold the barres in measures 11 and 12.
For those just enjoying the music, thank you for listening! And for those trying to learn it, best of luck!

One of the greatest challenges for me during quarantine has been the general pervasive sense of chaos. To some this may sound trite, but really spending time prioritizing and creating a schedule for myself has been a sanity saver. Mine includes everything from making my bed to applying for grants to editing videos for my YouTube channel to studying guitar in the evenings. #covid19coping https://www.instagram.com/p/B-d0J-JBk-r/?igshid=t5tf770rjj4
