The debate of the Existence of Souls.
The definition of ‘soul’ : the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal.
One view on the theory of soul’s is that there are three types.
1. Vegetative Soul ( Plant ) - Reproduction and growth.
2. Sensitive Soul ( Animal ) - Mobility and Sensation.
3. Rational Soul ( Human ) - Thought and Reflection.
In relation to a robot I see it as only having the soul traits of an animal, which is mobility and sensation and in most cases the robot in question does not experience sensation like a sentient animal.

Ryan Nagata
Ryan Nagata is a director and artist, who specialises in ray guns and space suits, residing in Los Angeles, California. He has produced several film, television and web videos on his work.
The work below is a ray gun he design for the WETA ray gun competition.
This is a retro ray gun which looks like it could be from Doctor Who. I like the contrast between the pale baby blue and the bright red.

Cel Animation
A cel, short for celluloid, is a transparent sheet on which objects are drawn or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation.Traditional animation (or classical animation, cel animation or hand-drawn animation) is an animation technique where each frame is drawn by hand. The technique was the dominant form of animation in cinema until the invention of computer animation.
My favourite classic Disney film is probably Lady and the Tramp not only because I love dogs, but for the beautiful narrative story and the adorable animation.

Gertie the Dinosaur (Winsor McCay, 1914) Gertie the Dinosaur is a 1914 animated short film by American cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay. It is the earliest animated film to feature a dinosaur. Despite only being 5 minutes in length the animation is really enlightening and compared to the animations we have today it shows the huge progress that has been made. Gertie the Dinosaur was the worlds first key frame animation.

Marty Cooper aka Hombre McSteez.
Hombre_McSteez is an artist who draws cartoons on transparent cels of acetate and adds creatures into everyday life. His real name is Marty Cooper, a Director, storyboard artist and animator from San Francisco, California.
His cartoony style makes for some hilarious situations for his little characters. I also like how they contrast to real life by means of the white backing on the acetate.
I used his idea of the drawing my robot on acetate and only redrawing the sections that would be moving i.e: the neck and butterfly. This made it easier to animate as I only had to switch out each frame of the neck moving and the butterfly flapping away.

Rotoscoping.
For either film or television, Rotoscoping is the rotated projection of a sequence of usually photographed action image frames so that the artist can trace from the frame or create an image to superimpose on it. It can be thought of as ‘painting on movies’ efficiently.
For some reason my perception of Rotoscoping is that its a shortcut and almost a cheat to trace over a photo. The results are beautiful to look at but its the process I’m not too fond of.

Hiroshi Ishiguro’s Geminoids
Hiroshi Ishiguro is director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, part of the Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University, Japan. A notable development of the laboratory is the Actroid, a humanoid robot with lifelike appearance and visible behaviour such as facial movements. Below is Erika.
Erica is an android developed as a research platform for the autonomous conversational robot. We are developing total technology to enable Erica to have natural interaction with persons by integrating various technologies such as voice recognition, human tracking, and natural motion generation. It has nineteen degrees of freedom for face, neck, shoulder, and can express various facial expressions and some gestural motions. Its appearance is designed for beautiful and neutral female face, by which people can familiarly interact with it. It speaks in synthesized voice.
These robots may look human but they are as far from human as you can get. If their synthesised speech doesn’t creep you out even a little bit it’s probably because you watch a lot of sci-fi films.

RoboCop (1987)
Due to being unable to watch Blade Runner because it was too long to watch in the allotted time and having to be subjected to Futurama instead to fill time, I took it upon myself to watch a good robot film in the evening after I got home from college.
This classic film that takes the moral dilemma of creating a cyborg from living human tissue of someone who can’t object due to complications. Alex Murphy the Detroit Cop who becomes RoboCop later on, is incapacitated by several fatal gunshot wounds but somehow he manages to survive it and become the Cyborg Police Officer we all know not to mess with.
One of the aspects of RoboCop is related to the gun trick he does before he puts it back in its holster. The reason he does this little trick is because of his son, Jimmy, who watches a television show in the film called TJ Laser. He also does the little trick to impress his son which I think is a cute touch to the whole film.
Rating: 8.5/10

The Robots on my Pinterest.
Here are the screenshots of my Pinterest on which I have compiled a collection of robotic stuff that I saw and thought they were interesting and immaculately designed.
This robotic feline looks like it could be part of the Transformers movie universe and to me it bares resemblance to Ravage the robotic wolf thing. ( Below is Ravage from the film franchise and below that is Ravage from the 1980′s G1 animated series)
I included Daft Punk because their look and visuals are very robotic and one of their number 1 hits is called ‘Robot Rock’ which I thought was very fitting for this project. As well as loving their music I admire their choice of appearance and especially enjoy the glowing helmets.

How Delilah the robot was created?
K-9 was a reference during my process in creating Delilah because the initial idea was that Delilah would have similar behavioural patterns of a dog. Unlike K-9 who has accurate vocal projection, his most renowned phrase being “Affirmative master/mistress”. The collar around his neck somewhat inspired the addition of a bow tied around Delilah’s head, but I didn't want to directly copy K-9′s collar, and since I knew I wanted my robot to be somewhat feminine looking, I settled on a pink bow which also doubles as helping hold her jaw in place.
Originally I had planned to give my robot similar eyes to Wall-E because I really enjoy the way he emotes and how his eyes mimic the focussing of camera lenses to infer curiosity or wonder, thus making him seem more human. In the animation process I had to simplify Delilah’s eye but I attempted to regain some of the detail in the concept art piece I digitised, where she is in the company of a girl. I avoided making her eye too similar to Wall-E’s by making the eye reddish-magenta in colour.
This derpy robot is also from Wall-E and serves as a vacuum cleaner droid when functioning properly. The neck portion of this droid served as inspiration for Delilah’s neck although hers is made from metal and the vacuum droids’ is made of some flexible plastic material that make’s it seem almost like an accordion.

3D Modelling
What is 3D modelling?
In the world of computer graphics, 3D modelling software is used to create an accurate mathematical representation of a three-dimensional object (living or inanimate) via the use of specialized software.
An example of 3D modelling an organic living thing would be Rapunzel in Disney’s 2010 feature film Tangled. I like the way in which the hard lines are softened to create the model on the right.
An example of an inanimate object created on 3D modelling software would be Gypsy Danger the main Jaeger in 2013′s exo-suit epic featuring Idris Elba.
The enquiry as to what 3D modelling software is used for is also answered with the question posed above. In the film and television industry 3D modelling is used to construct characters and objects for the production of the film in question. It’s kind of the next step up after concept art has been drawn up and confirmed.
Tony Stark’s holographic display in his helmet is made in Cinema 4D for the Avengers (2011), Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
What is Cinema 4D?
CINEMA 4D is a 3D modeling, animation, motion graphic and rendering application developed by MAXON Computer in Germany. It is capable of procedural and polygonal modeling, animating, lighting, texturing, rendering, and common features found in 3D modelling applications.
What is Cinema 4D capable of producing?
Cinema 4D is only limited by the imagination and skill level of the person using it.

Science Fiction Landscapes
I could look at pictures of the moon and mars but wheres the fun in that, so i decided to compile some bizarre and beautiful landscapes from different iconic science fiction films.
( Above: Avatar jungle) The interesting aspect of this scene is the underwater feeling that can be perceived by the glowing bio-luminescent jellyfish-looking plants hanging down from the trees.
(Above: A street on the planet Coruscant from Star Wars) This planet is all technology and is one big city. The lights and air traffic during the night is extremely reminiscent of rush hour and traffic jams on motorways like the M11.
(Above: Star Trek) The steps carved into the mountain seem withered and ancient and lead to a rocky bridge and a building formation in the distance. The sunset is slightly otherworldly due to the bright crimson and orange in the sky.
These landscapes are either the work of computer software or sculptors and painters. The artistry within the designs of these landscapes are incredibly important to making a film feel real and authentic to an audience. The landscapes from Star Trek and Avatar are also prime examples that not all sci-fi films require tech based settings and cities.

What is Isometric?
The dictionary definition of Isometric is; of or having equal dimensions.
In relation to Cinema 4D which employs Isometric projection to enable the viewer to view all three faces of a cube (or whatever the object is) simultaneously. It is also a type of parallel projection.
An example of this in effect would be this AT-AT and AT-ST from Star Wars depicted below in isometric view.
The one below caught my attention because of its resemblance to the city in the Ghost in the Shell trailer.
I love the way this isometric image is coloured, the pink and teal contrast each other perfectly and the addition of the hints of pale blue and whites and blacks make for an interesting concept for a sci-fi city block, complete with what seems to be a gas station, cell tower and a hotel. The inclusion of a sleek looking trail really ties together the idea that this is a potentially dangerous city block.
The glowing neon lights in the city below look like they would made a really nice edition to the city in Ghost in the Shell. I am really looking forward to seeing the film when it’s finally released.

The Backstory Behind Delilah
This is the process of creating some concept art for my robot named Delilah. If this was a short cartoon series I would probably call it something like: The Lost Child and Delilah. This would be to make sure that an audience didn’t confuse the girl as Delilah.
I started with a flat colour image and planned to build the shading and depth onto it from there.
The idea behind this concept art is that a lost child stumbles across Delilah the robot in a post-apocalyptic world of ruin and wreckage. She was separated from her family and wants to find them again. Delilah and the girl form a bond and they travel around together.
This also represents a humans desire for companionship- For stability and for the purpose of having someone else there so she doesn’t go insane from loneliness which was bound to happen. This is similar to the film Cast Away in which Tom Hanks is stranded on an island and creates a relationship with Wilson the Volleyball in order to maintain some form of sanity and emotional security.
This is the final image. The girl has a cut on her cheek and a grazed hand to suggest that she’s had some trouble in the environment in which she is thrust into and struggles to stay alive. There is dust in the air surrounding them to simulate a desolate landscape and debris. Overall I am really happy with how it turned out. This also happens to be my first completed piece on Photoshop.
