Me: "Your Spotify playlist is... unusual. I can't figure out a trend. What does a song need to have for you to like it?" Beth: [age 14] "Well, it's got to have something weird in it." Me: "Weird in what way?" Beth: "Maybe not just weird. It could be old. Or funny." Me: "Hold on. Old is the same as weird? Like I-can-smell-the-80s-hairspray-in-this-song old, or like medieval-monks-chanting-in-a-church old?" Beth: "The 80s is weird enough. We don't have to go too back much past that." Me: "I still don't get the trend." Beth: "And it has to have something catchy about it. A beat or a lyric or something." Me: "OK. You've got 'Surface Pressure' from Disney's Encanto. What's weird about that?" Beth: "The song itself isn't that weird or funny. It's more about the character singing it. And it's really catchy." Me: "Then you have the 1980s pop 'I Think We're Alone Now' by Tiffany." Beth: "Oh, yeah. It's catchy, plus it was in kind of a cool weird scene in The Umbrella Academy." Me: "And then the King George song 'You'll Be Back' from Hamilton." Beth: "Come on. 'I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love'?! That's funny! And that guy's vibe is just sooo creepy." Me: "And Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen." Beth: "That song is all vibe. The lyrics make no sense at all. But the vibe is cool." Me: "So... this playlist isn't really about styles of music? It's really a collection of vibes?" Beth: "Why else would anyone listen to music, except for the vibes?"
