So, I was reading Elves of Faerun and there was a very interesting part under the different types/tribes of elves concerning their different approaches to religion. The book’s narrator and diegetic author suggests that representation of the particular elven group in the elven pantheon may correlate to their overall religious attitude. Star elves who have no clear patron are said to be rather irreligious and the fictional author even suggest that the banishment of lolth and the rest of the dark elf deities may have played a role in the drow’s descent since they no longer had an advocate in their pantheon.

I don’t know, it was an interesting train of thought. It’s fascinating to imagine an elven philosopher ponder these things.

A thought occurs: So, apparently drow don’t technically have their own language. Or rather their language is a combination of undercommon and elvish. Only Elvish is used in religious ceremony as Lolth doesn’t believe in being prayed to in any other language. Given this, I’d like to propose the following:

-The church of lolth is likely preserving elvish to make sure it’s not corrupted by undercommon as to please the goddess.

-Even though elves live for a long time, their language will still be going through some changes. Especially when you consider how long it’s been since the “descent of the drow”

This leads to the interesting and hilarious possibility of drow speaking a more archaic form of elvish. So any conversations between a surface elf and a drow would look a little like this:

Elf: I think this man is lying.

Drow: Verily?

Elf: Yeah, I believe he’s the one we’re looking for.

Drow: Shall I trounce this villainous knave?

Elf: What? Oh yeah…sure.
