I subscribed to the idea that the only secret identities Lois hasn’t figured out are the ones she hasn’t thought about long enough.

I was reading this Birds of Prey comic, and in it, a villain gives Lois a tip about Babs being Oracle, so Lois and Babs meet up, and Babs is nervously thinking about how Lois could ruin her life. When she feels like Lois is threatening her, she pulls out a picture of Lois and Clark kissing with Clark in his Superman costume but holding his glasses (exposing his secret identity ig), but doesn't end up showing it to Lois bc Lois says never mind and leaves. Anyway, this is so interesting and weird to me bc it honestly did not occur to me that Lois didn't already know her secret identity. It's really interesting to consider the overlap of characters and who knows what.

“David [Corenswet] said something to me that really affected me. We were trying on all these different versions, and we screen tested with trunks and no trunks. And one of the things David said is that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He’s got these incredible powers. He shoots beams out of his eyes, can blow the truck over. He’s this incredibly powerful, could be considered scary individual and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler, he dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that. And I was like, that really clicked in for me. And I think trying to pretend that Superman’s costume doesn’t have some frivolity to it at its base, trying to make it look serious, is silly because he is a superhero. He’s the first one, brightly colored, and that’s who he is.“

Love how the Superman trailer gives you these super wondrous and superhuman acts Superman can achieve while also showing how much of a pathetic babygirl he is. The first shot we see of him is him bleeding in the snow. He has to be carried home by his crusty white dog. He’s a head taller than everyone else and still manages to be terrible at navigating crowds. Someone throws a beer can at him and he just goes :( The very next shot shows him clearly dirtied and battered from some sort of battle. He’s shown holding a robot’s hand and cradling its head as it is dying, as if to comfort it. I love him already.

Superman is an incredibly kind and tender character. (If he’s not being written that way, then he’s not being written well.) He inspires hope not just through his heroics, but also through his kindness toward other people. That’s his thing. Don’t you DARE call tenderness a “weakness.” Get your toxic masculinity the hell away from me and go read a badly written Batman comic if you want a “tough” male character.

K. Time to voice my opinion in advance with the chance that I may be wrong.

I think James Gunn is going to do an epic job with Superman. Period. He has a perfect run in the superhero/anti-hero genre and he’s gonna be able to deliver us a story that’s emotionally rich and character driven. He has always done that. His visuals have been epic. His music choice is perfect. I have only hope (hehe) for his version of the DCCU.

Formal post to say that if you're so petty as to be complaining that the superman trailer looks too happy, then you don't understand superman and I want you to stay the hell away from me and my blog because you have no comprehension as to who superman is. He is hope. He is heart and soul and love. His comics have been gentle and supportive and whimsical.

Superman is joy and whimsy. His entire character is shaped on passing down love. His parents on krypton loving him enough to protect him, his parents on earth loving him enough to care for him, his friends loving him enough to keep his secret. The people of earth loving him enough to have a little faith in him, and him loving them in return.

Superman is love and if you cannot find the simplest part of yourself to be gentle and bite down your edgy dudebro critiques then you lack the very thing that superman wanted to pass on. You can dislike something, you can disagree with the path something takes, but choosing to be a petty asshole and ruin the whimsy for other people makes you pathetic.

In fact, it makes you lex. A man so distasteful, so corrupt and cruel, he loathes to see another man try and make people happy.
