Who can you trust with your spare key?
Think about the people in your life. Who, would you say, of all the people you would give it to, is the person you would trust the very most with your spare key? Chances are, the person you picked it reliable, honest, and is someone you are close to. Here are a few types of people you SHOULDN'T let hold on to your spare key.
1) New boyfriend/girlfriend.
All too often our locksmiths have to change locks because a spare key was given to a fling that didn't end up working out. You may believe he/she is the one but after a few weeks it really can be difficult to really get to "know" someone. You should wait AT LEAST several months, or, even years before you trust someone with your spare key. It could end up saving you money in the long run so you don't have to call a locksmith. We say this because it is very easy to have your judgement clouded by a new relationship and it can get in the way of one's judgement.
Be polite but firm when letting your significant other know you just aren't ready to give them a key. Take your time and get to know this person. When you're ready to give them a key it will mean even more in the end.
2) Friend of a friend
You need to be cautious of letting someone borrow your keys that will, in turn, let someone else borrow your keys. No matter how much you believe you can trust someone, be cautious when they say "You can trust so-and-so with your keys." Our advice is, if you don't personally know the person they are vouching for, why should you trust them?
3) A welcome mat
Though, technically not a person, we still felt this is extremely important to note! Why is it that people, time after time, trust a door mat to hold their spare house key? That's the FIRST place an intruder will look. Unfortunately, a staggering number of burglaries could be prevented if people simply stopped thinking under the door mat is a good idea.
What do you think about the above tips? Let us know if you have some stories that made YOU regret who you ended up loaning  your spare key to. We may even have a discount code in it for you! You can let us know in a comment on here or comment on our facebook page Locksmith San Marcos Texas.

Emergency Locksmith Tips: Lockouts
Unfortunately, losing keys is just something that happens to the best of us (and always at the worst time). If you happen to get lockedout during this cold-weather season, we'd like to offer tips for you to stay safe and warm until help arrives.
After deciding to stay calm, here's what we would offer as recommended course of action:
1) Make A Call
Call a locksmith or the property owner to let them know you need help. you may also have someone close to you that has a spare key. We often talk about having a close friend hang on to a spare key for your home, though this may not come in handy if you're locked out of a car.
Your phone, especially these days, is your best friend. If you, unfortunately, do not have your phone on you, head to a nearby business to see if they will allow you to call a locksmith or a friend with your spare key.
2. Find Shelter
A neighbor may be able to help you out with this or a friend that is a nearby you can call. If you had the unfortunate experience of getting locked out far away from home, you may be able to head back to the place you were visiting while waiting for help to arrive.
Whatever form of help you receive - it is important to stay warm in these cold winter months. Hopefully there is a coffee shop or restaurant near by for shelter!
3. Safety First
Safety is always the number one priority during a lockout. Never go full on with step number two if you feel threatened and only call trustworthy and reputable groups or individuals to help you.
Always do your research, stay safe, and know who you can trust.
