liz was excited for their regular lunch, a stupid kind of excited. she really wanted to believe him, and she wouldnβt ask questions because of it. an attempted mugging wasnβt too bad, she supposed. βit makes you look totally badass, iβm not too worried about you,β that, at least, was true. she knew mars could probably hold his own. she would hate to be the other guy. βwhatβre we having today ?β she tries to act like everything is normal, her brain can take anything else outside of that.
( @lizdunham )
"I know, I know." Mars says quickly as he walks into her home with two sandwiches from the deli. He'd sent a short text asking if she wanted to have one of their usual lunches, and shown up with his healing black eye and split lip. He's just thankful that she can't see the bandages on his torso. "An attempted mugging. Nothing seriously injured except my ego, promise."

liz was a busy body, evidenced by literally everything about her. if she could avoid it, she would never stop moving. she'd make a really badass shark. her associates would be lucky to find her in the office at this time of day, unless something really important happened.
she's on the phone with one of these associates, he's trying to tell her about this case where he clearly made a mistake. something liz wouldn't have done in her first year of law school, let alone as an intern. she's speaking just loud enough for her the person on the other end of the phone to hear outside, but it's a little too loud for inside the cozy coffee shop. "no, jack, i don't care. you're an adult. figure it out, or pack your things. jesus christ." she hangs up and the phone goes back into her pocket. it's her lunch break, she doesn't have time to deal with these idiots right now.
she's already debating whether to get an iced americano or hot one when laurie appears next to her. "hey you !" liz smiles, she didn't know him well by any means, but he was a good friend to have, already. "oh, really? you're too sweet. i'm thinking iced americano, what do you think ?"

β A CAFΓ IN SOHO ; MIDDAY
Laurie never worked out of the office unless he was working at home. But something about the late summer sun made him want to exchange his corporate glass walls for those of a quaint little cafΓ©. With all of his early morning tasks taken care of, he headed out and set up shop- laptop, notebooks, and one strong cup of black coffee- in the corner of a rustic cafΓ© heβd be very happy to return to.
It was approaching the later half of the lunch hour for most and after spending the last twenty minutes writing emails, Laurie finally finished his drink and sat back in his chair with a sigh. Thank God his inbox was now empty. Hopefully he didnβt speak too soon on that one; no doubt another email or five would pop up in no time.
It was as he sat back that he saw a familiar face enter the cafΓ©: Liz Dunham. She was ambitious, beautiful, and a stellar lawyer that Laurie hadnβt known for particularly long, but had gotten along well with whenever they crossed paths.
Laurie got to his feet and sporadically checked over his shoulder to make sure no-one had taken a shine to his belongings (luckily the cafΓ© was relatively quiet and most people who had come in had their orders to go) as he went to join the queue, get another coffee, and greet Liz.
βHey,β he smiled, grabbing her attention. βFancy seeing you here. Can I get you anything? My treat.β

when they left tonight, eddie will give her a play by play of everything he and mars had done in liz's absence. his long story would start once they walked out the door, would last the whole drive home, and when the doorman asked where they had been all night, he would tell the story again. eddie didn't know his dad well, and the closest thing he had gotten to that father/son relationship was the "babysitting" mars had been doing. it's a thought liz has had a lot at this point, something she wouldn't voice aloud.
"good," she smiles, "i'm glad." she follows him to the back, quickly debates what to tell him, and what to disregard. "it was fine, don't think i'll be seein' them again any time soon." and that's where she'd like to leave it. she knows he probably knows, but she'd rather him not know that she knows what he knows.
the heels she wore out are already placed gently at the front door, and she's sinking into one of his big, comfy chairs before she knows it, "ridiculous, you should definitely sue. veggie pakoras are the best part."
While Mars finds it almost effortless to put on his charming and professional persona at work and during the day, it's quite another thing when the office doors are closed and he's at home, babysitting Eddie. He and Lara had never had kids - and while they'd talked about it, at the time it seemed like Mars was far too busy. And then Lara got sick. And now he's fifty, and fully immersed in his work. His closest thing to a family is...
"No trouble." Mars rarely had any issues with Eddie. The boy was creative and precocious and had plenty of questions, but the architect always had things to keep him busy. The LEGOs were perfect for not only showing Eddie what Mars does for a living, but letting him try too. He'd even started making little blueprints of his own (though they were mostly glorified drawings of schools and funky houses, but still). "C'mon, love, come sit. How was your night?" He knows she was meeting someone for dinner. And he assumes it was a date, regardless of if she's said so or not. They know each other well enough, after all.
Mars leads her back to the study where it's quiet. Warm light and a quiet record playing and he's getting her some water. "Indian food should get here soon. Got our usuals, plus some extra naan. They were out of veggie pakoras, though. Fucking sacrilegious."

β΅ for Mars!
SendΒ β΅ and my muse will answer the following.Β Β
Their first impression of your muse: lara's husband, cool guy ! sure does work an awful lot. that's kinda sucky.
Current impression:Β one of her best friends, but maybe more ? eddie sure does love him, which is scary, to say the least -- but nowadays, she finds herself relying on him more than she probably should. Β
Are they attracted to your muse?: ... maybe. Β Β
Something they find frightening about your muse: how he's able to work the longest hours he can, but remain a soft person. legality & politics make people tough, and hanging that up at the front door is hard. mars is so good at this, at least around her.
Something they find adorable about your muse:Β how he plans and builds legos with eddie like it's a legitimate architectural masterpiece, and not just blocks being stuck together. & how he makes sure eddie feels proud of the work he's done. Β
Would my muse sacrifice themselves for yours?:Β Β yes.
Would my muse go on a date with yours?Β platonic/romantic:Β yes/yes.Β
One word my muse would use to describe yours:Β dynamic. Β
Would my muse slap yours if they could?: no !Β
Would my muse hug/kiss yours?: yes

the date had not gone well . she had such rotten luck with these types of things ( things being men . ) lara would've told her that some other guy would come around , that she should stop looking and start letting people come to her -- love will come when you least expect it , had been her words . lara had been a good egg, someone who had always been encouraging , even when liz had not deserved the support . that unwavering friendship had translated into a friendship, of sorts, with mars when she was alive, and a comfort in him now that she was gone .
β awe, my little architect, β she smiles, recalling when, upon learning he would be staying with mars, eddie had started drawing his plan for the building. it didnβt look quite the same, but was definitely impressive. βit looks great,β she says, then ( quickly ) mom mode turns on, β was he good ? did he cause you any trouble ? β
Location: Mars' Home Status: Closed ( @lizdunham )
He doesn't know why he started babysitting - and certainly, if Liz knew the kind of life he lived within the Brotherhood, perhaps she would've thought twice about him taking care of her 5 year old son. But he and Liz had a sort of odd relationship. One based on Lara, which made it more complicated. Connected by grief, by a deceased wife and a close friend. And now it's just them. And Eddie, of course. Eddie keeps Mars on his game, keeps him focusing on the little boy who's precocious and playing with LEGOs. And Mars focuses on that, focuses on showing him that if he really wants the building to be structurally sound, you'd put the blocks here, not there. It's easier to keep busy when Eddie's running around and asking questions and doing the most. He likes this kind of chaos.
And by the time Eddie's asleep in one of the guest rooms in Mars's architecturally impressive home, he's moved back into the cozy den. Music is playing quietly and he's ordering Indian food for them to share, knowing Liz will be back soon. He walks himself over to the door when he gets a text, not wanting to ring the doorbell and wake the sleeping child. "Hello babes." He murmurs, leaning to give her a kiss on the cheek before letting her inside. "Eddie's already asleep. The high-rise he built is pretty impressive though. On the coffee table." He points with a grin.

galas had never been lizβs forte. she always finds herself a little to stuffy or a little too drunk or with a little too much food in her stomach. really, she was getting a little too tired of being in this place & a little tired of fake smiles and social casualties and who knows what. sheβs almost outside to call eddie, convince the nanny that she might should come home early if he wanted her there.
the staircase is a welcome reprieve from the hustle and bustle, "asa !" and she hopes that she doesn't sound too RELIEVED to see someone she actually likes. she sits down ( as easily & as best she can ) next to him. "my night's been fine, but i can't go more than two seconds without my phone dinging." she sits down next to the man, eager to talk to someone she actually likes. "i gave my son an app to contact emergencies, and he's instead using it to update me on WWE smackdown, he's worried about me missing it." she takes a drink of the shirley temple in her hand, "what about you, sweetheart ? how's your night been ?"
Where: The Brooklyn Museum Status: Closed ( @lizdunhamβ )Β
The event is in full swing and Asaβs thankfully not drunk yet. Heβs trying very hard not toΒ βdrink sociallyβ- which is when he gulps down cocktail after cocktail instead of having to figure out small talk. Itβs so much easier, especially for him- to nod politely and look invested and then keep drinking. But heβs been doing alright with the talking tonight. The talking, the banter. Heβs lucky he hasnβt been pulled in for shots yet, because heβs sure someone will sucker him into it- especially if the others from the Syndicate have anything to say about it.Β
But for now heβs taken a step outside, finding the front steps to be breezier and more comforting for some fresh air. His head is buzzing despite only having one cocktail- heβs been noticing a dull ache in his temple, but heβs used to it. Just a nice sit will help. So he sits himself down on the long and beautiful staircase, before realizing someone else familiar is nearby.Β βLiz?β He smiles, giving a shy wave. Heβs trying very hard not to get the lovely long jacket dirty, the sheer dark shirt underneath not providing much warmth from the breezy outdoors though.Β βI didnβt realize youβd be here- have a seat, I was debating a cigarette.β He chuckles tiredly, a hand rubbing the faded scar on his temple, other hand feeling for the box of cigarettes heβd tucked away somewhere.Β βYou look beautiful, loveβ¦ howβs your night going?β

β¦.
βYes, thatβs the whole point- the structural integrity would be bloody abysmal if you did it like that.β Mars bit back a groan as he listened to the client heβd been working with over the phone for the past hour keep insisting on the most oddly shaped barristers heβd ever heard of. Mars had so many things to do- in fact, heβd been jotting down lists on his phone for the next ammunitions order and how it would coincide with which construction shipment. Dates had to be perfect, men had to be readyβ¦ the man on speakerphone was still prattling along and Mars head a knock, frowning. It was an odd time for anyone to come knocking on his door, and he didnβt have any more appointments.
He had already gotten a bit more comfortable as the day wore on- shirt sleeves rolled up, body language far less formal.Β βListen Rod,Β βs been an absolute joy but weβve been at it for over an hour now. HowΒ βbout I call you on Tuesday, yeah? After Iβve sent you the mock-ups. If you still want those barristers after you see my ideas, weβll regroup, alright? Alright. Cheers, mate. Have a good one.β The phone was promptly hung up and he got himself up with a grunt, trying to fix himself up a bit. The man was tall, somewhat burly, and had perpetual bags under his eyes at this point. The door was tugged open and-Β
βLiz.β He stated in surprise, his voice softer than intended as the image of Lara in her hospital bed rushed through his mind.Β ββ¦What a surprise, um, come in, please.β He held out an arm to her, giving her a squeeze as he stepped back to let her in.Β βDid you get lost on your way back from lunch?β He asked, seeing the wrapped sandwich in her hand.Β
"mars !" and it's so awkward. she truly, truly wished there was a world in which their interaction could be normal. alas, that was not the world they lived in. now or ( probably ) ever. "sorry if i'm intruding on anything," she had a habit of doing so, and if he were upset with her for that, he'd be totally valid, it probably wouldnβt change anything she did, but it would be valid.
her nosiness was easily turned on -- this time, subtly, of course. this was a friend(ish) she was snooping on, and it was a concerned visit. honestly, she hadnβt expected to be let in. but when she didβ¦ lots of papers, a phone that still looked warm, and mars wasnβt in any better shape. βoh no, um, this is for you !β she reaches out her hand to give the aforementioned meal to him, βitβs nothing much, just an italian sub, and a Dr. Pepper.β mostly, it was what she likes after a long day, but whatever, itβs the thought that counts, right ? βjust wanted to make sure you were eating ! i know how busy these days can get so... yeah !β

liz has a very specific routine when it comes to work days, from the outfit she picks out the night before to the coffee she gets on her commute to the courthouse. its very meticulous. briefcase in one hand, coffee in the other, she's going through every possible question she thinks the prosecution could ask. a high profile political client was bound to be interesting. the same music as always, the same dr. scholls as always, and... "motherfucker," a swarm of political commentators... among them her douchebag little brother.
she's not pulling him aside, that's unnecessary, there's a lot of them, of course, but they're all spaced out enough to where it's easy to talk to just david. a snap and a finger pointing in his face, "no, no, this is a disruptor free zone," she knows in her bones that it's very 'mom said it's my turn to deal with the stupid politicians' but she really doesn't care. high profile political case aside, one dunham in a space was MORE than enough.

ft. mars gaffney ( @designedonchaos )
liz recognized that lara had been a good friend of hers, particularly in a time where liz had not particularly deserved a friend like her. so, even though she had heard quite a few things about mars ( and how he and lara had fizzled in and out ) a strange part of her felt like she owed it to lara to check up on him. make sure he was eating, sleeping, not working too hard, etc. he wasn't her responsibility, by any means -- she had enough people relying on her.
it didn't matter. she had made the decision after work that she would check on him today. so ( deli sandwich in hand ) liz is at his door, knocking with the non-deli-sandwiched & drink holding hand. waiting for the owner to open up. ugh, this was so unlike her.

"stupid droughts always disappointing me" a shitty joke that probably doesn't land -- and is definitely in poor taste. oh well ! "the rats are what really gets me," opening her umbrella to protect her ( freshly colored , thank you very much ) hair. "notice how they're never in the tourist trap areas ? there's a conspiracy theory there." liz was not a tin foil hat kind of person, and never would be, but she could pretend just this once.
a sip of her coffee ( much needed, work had been kicking her ass lately ) and a walk in the rain was just so new york. "charm, vermin, whatever you want to call it." she flashes a smile, "though, i wouldn't have it any other way, of course."
"Y'know, last I heard California's dealing with a bit of a drought." She laughs as she comes out of the coffee shop right behind Liz, already fumbling with her umbrella to try and protect at least some of her clothing from becoming ruined by the caustic nature of city rain. "I'd rather deal with the smell of piss than choking on wildfires every year."
It's so matter of fact, but she's blaming it on the fact that it's been a minute since she'd had some caffeine, and sleep was not coming quite as easily as she would like. "I feel like LA would be just as nasty, though. Cities and all. Besides, New York has charm."
