happy new year! i love seeing your posts about your dogs ❤︎ what was your biggest dog owning achievement in 2017? what was your dog's biggest achievement? what is one thing you would like to do with your dog for 2018? wishing you all the best 2018! #dogblrpositivity
Has it been this long? Why did I never answer this ask?
Anyway, my biggest achievement this year was getting a job as a dog trainer! I finish up my (human) training next month, and then I’m on for training dogs! It’s a mobile company and hopefully I won’t have very many BNTs, which I think I would hate. My passion is teaching people about dogs, not just training dogs.
Finn’s biggest achievement this year so far was starting Psychiatric Service Dog work! I had a really, really bad winter and he seriously brought me back to being a functional human being. He took to it so readily and he loves working.
In 2024, I would love to get involved in the DC Schutzhund community. I just think those teams are amazing and I adore high-drive dogs. I want to see how the sport works. For Finn, I would like to really build his stay/place command and level up his stay in general. I’ve been lazy about it and now it’s biting me in the ass in SD work. I also want to do more things that rile Finn up. He has to be calm most of the time as a PSD, so I want to do some more parkour, barn hunt, maybe FastCAT. But that’s a lot to ask of me lol.

I don’t think it has much to do with luck.
Approximately 15 000 years ago humans and dogs made a deal.
Aligning itself with the furless biped, the wolf gained access to a relatively steady supply of food that freed it from many of the burdens of puppy rearing for prolonged periods after the pups are weaned, reproductive freedom for young females, and greater ease and efficiency in hunting… The biped gained a hunting partner who greatly increased its take, a guard against the dangers of the night, a guide in life and death, a beast of burden, a traveling companion, and a lap dog.
— Mark Derr, How the Dog Became the Dog: From Wolves to Our Best Friends (2011)
This unspoken agreement carried through centuries, vast distances, stark changes in culture and environment, and became even more intensified as considered breeding practices took hold.
When you take a dog into your house you are – knowingly or not – signing your name to this contract. There are plenty of those who break it, who fail to uphold their end of the deal. But when it comes down to it, it’s not luck. It’s just honestly upholding the agreement. Feed your dog, water it, exercise it, teach it, provide it guidance, offer it affection, keep it safe. Give your dog the opportunities to make choices, to use its senses and to discover new and novel things. Love your dog for who and what they are, wholly and unconditionally.
If you let a dog into your heart it will make itself at home.

Lady in store with pug: He’s so cute! He’s always snorting and grunting :)
What I said: Awww!
What I thought: He’s grunting and snorting because he has chronic breathing problems as a result of being the extremely inbred abomination consequence of man playing God.

Mm Haley’s ribbon wall is jam packed and I don’t even have room for certificates and things (might put those in a book?).
Time to take down all the flat placement ribbons and make that ribbon quilt I’ve been talking about. Then only rosettes will go up … Until I run out of space again and then either I find a bigger wall or I only put up titles. Though Tom and I are hopefully moving in together this year, so I guess I might have a new wall for ribbons.
