Amsterdam Comics is pleased to announce our inaugural international conference, “Comics Interaction,” which will take place from 1-3 July in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Comprised of three days of parallel panel sessions, round table discussions, and public keynote lectures, the conference aims to encourage interdisciplinary connections between comics scholars from various disciplines, comics artists, publishers, and cultural workers from museums and other heritage sites. The conference will focus on three themes of comics interaction: Comics in Art, Art in Comics; History and Trauma in Comics; and Comics as World Literature. The conference will be hosted at the University of Amsterdam and several local cultural institutions.

Prof. Mary Kemperink (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) overhandigde Querido-auteur en arts Toon Tellegen vandaag een klein geschenk na afloop van de gedachtenwisseling met de masterstudenten die deelnemen aan de cursus “Literatuur en depressie” vanwege het MasterLanguage-programma, 24 oktober 2014, P.C. Hoofthuis UvA Amsterdam. Daaronder: enkele foto’s van de studenten en onze promovenda Anne-Fleur van de Meer (derde foto, rechts), die discussiërden over De genezing van de krekel - de veelgelezen fabel waarin Tellegen over de “aanhoudend sombere gevoelens” van een krekel schrijft (en een goede afloop presenteert). Holly Dugan & Sensory History
Dr. Kristine Steenbergh VU Amsterdam is pleased to invite you to a lecture on a synaesthetic approach to sensory history. Holly Dugan - author of The Ephemeral History of Perfume - will talk about her research into early modern English pomanders and the smell of old books on Friday 28 February 2014. Come smell the historical odours of pomander and ambergris, with a brief introduction to her collection of historical odours by Rijksmuseum curator and olfactory art historian Caro Verbeek.

"The best feature of the VU is our ‘joined-up’ approach to literary studies!
At the moment we are at a really exciting junction in the way we teach literature at the VU. Like many Universities we have formerly approached ‘literary’ studies in a fairly traditional way but this is about to change as we embark on introducing a new way of connecting the study of literature with broader social and economic issues.
We are dismantling the old fashioned parameters of looking at different literatures based on language difference and doing something new that is relevant and contemporary whist keeping our strong academic values. This new degree ‘Literature and Society‘ is a really unique degree course that encourages a reading of ‘literature’ in ways that are more meaningful for the 21st century.
Our programme is focused on connecting literary studies across language boundaries and, by looking at its relationship with the ‘real’ world outside of academia, we aim to put our students in a better position with regard to future careers than more ‘traditional’ programmes do. It is a big step for us as a teaching team and we have worked extremely hard to get the balance right. We have lost nothing of our academic vigour but now teach with a focus that explores literature as socially relevant and one which gives our students the chance to experience a much wider variety of texts."
