The Importance of New Member Orientation
The importance of new member orientation cannot be emphasised enough. Imagine belonging to an organisation and having only a vague idea of its goals, programs, history or traditions.
Would you feel like you belonged?
Would you be motivated and committed to help the organisation reach its goals?
Of course not! You’d likely be wondering why you joined the organisation at all.
The information presented during orientation provides a foundation for new members. It helps them understand how the club functions, what their role will be and gives them the big picture of their district and the association.
When new members are properly informed, they are more likely to feel comfortable with the club and become actively involved in club activities right away.
A properly oriented member is also one who is most likely to remain in Lions for years.
New Member Sponsor: The new member’s sponsor is also their mentor for a year and a day.
New Member Orientation
Who Lions Are - Lions are men and women dedicated to serving those in need, in our own community and around the world. The over 1.4 million members in more than 48,000 clubs in over 200 countries are different in many ways but share a core belief – community is what we make it. In addition to humanitarian service, Lions enjoy fellowship and develop leadership skills.
Vision Statement:
To be the global leader in community and humanitarian service.
Mission Statement:
To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.
Motto:
“We Serve.”
Slogan:
Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety
Lions Clubs Activities:
The universal motto of every Lions Club is "We Serve". Whether helping the sight or hearing impaired...conducting drug or diabetes awareness campaigns providing recreational opportunities for the handicapped... sponsoring the research into the causes and the prevention of blindness... providing children with sports equipment or just a place to play...or raising funds to make it all possible, service always comes first for a Lion.That's why Lions Clubs International is not only the largest, but also the most active service club organisation in the world.
LIONS ARE individuals that make up the world's largest and most active service club organisation.
LIONS ARE people who have decided to give something back to their communities, who are dedicated to seeking out people in need, and who meet those needs in an efficient, dignified and caring way.
LIONS ARE men and woman who believe that, by working together with other people and uniting in the bonds of friendship, they will be able to accomplish far more for their communities than would be possible alone. LIONS ARE dedicated to maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards in their Club - and in their personal and professional lives. LIONS ARE people who cherish the friendship of their own Club, and who also feel a close kinship with Lions of other nations in 200 countries and geographical locations throughout the free world. LIONS ARE aware that the friendships made through Lionism last a lifetime because they are based on a common commitment to service. LIONS ARE very serious about their commitment to humanitarian service, and certainly don't mind having a lot of fun and excitement along the way. LIONS ARE ...or perhaps could be... someone just like you! ...yes, but what's in it for me? There are so many benefits. For some it is simply to have a sense of belonging - or to be part of the team. For many there is the desire for altruism - the need to give to others.Opportunities abound where you can associate with new found friends and where the emphasis is pure fun. You will receive thanks from those you serve and from your fellow Club members too, because you will have touched so many lives in need.
Lions Club Objectives
TO CREATE and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.
TO PROMOTE the principles of good government and good citizenship.
TO TAKE an active interest in the civic, cultural, social, and moral welfare of the community.
Lions' Code of Ethics
To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.
To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.
To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.
Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubts against myself.
To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.
Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, as to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labour and means.
To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy.
To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
The Lions Pledge
I pledge my allegiance to my country and to the cause of peace throughout the world.
I believe in the principals of Lionism as contained in the Lions Code of Ethics.
I am proud to be a Lion.
Dedicated to the service of others.
The Lions Creed
A person who achieves success, who lives well, laughs often and loves much; who gains the respect of intelligent people and the love of little children.
Who fills a niche and accomplishes his or her task, who leaves the world better than he or she found it whether by a brighter flower, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul.
Who always sees the best in others and gives the best he or she has; whose life is an inspiration, whose memory is a benediction.
That person is a LION.
Prayer
Lord make me instrumental of thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console, to be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Invocation
O God, who art Eternal Light and infinite Wisdom;
in whom we live and move and have our being,
we beg Thy blessing upon our deliberations
that we too may acquire true knowledge and wisdom,
and thus become more fit to serve
our neighbour, our Country and Thee,
Our Heavenly Father.
Amen

Elections
All officers of the Club are elected annually for a term beginning on July 1. Beginning around March, the club president appoints a nominating committee to discuss and select candidates for the various Club offices to be voted upon by the club in April.
Awards
Lions believe that service is its own reward, but special accomplishments and milestones should be recognised and celebrated. You may think that awards and recognition are a long way off, but as a new Lion, you can aspire to some awards almost immediately.
Awards are presented for inviting new members to join a Lions club and for helping to form a new club, both of which you are eligible to do as soon as you become a Lion.
Other awards are presented for longevity of membership, outstanding service activities, public relations initiatives and leadership excellence.
Awards available to members at the club level for service activity and membership initiatives include:
Membership Keys: Membership Key Awards acknowledge the importance of effective recruitment in membership growth by recognising the number of new members a Lion has sponsored once they have been members for a year and a day.
Chevrons: Lions Clubs International recognises the anniversaries of our members with Chevron Awards. Chevron Awards are issued starting at 10 years of service and given in five-year increments.
Member Sponsor Recognition: Members who invite someone to join their club are recognised with a special sponsor’s pin and sponsor certificate. Members who stay for a year and a day count toward eligibility for Membership Keys.
Many clubs also have their own award programs to recognise the outstanding achievements of their members. Additionally, club leaders are eligible for a variety of awards to acknowledge superior efforts, such as the Membership Satisfaction Award, given to clubs who have positive member growth and retain their existing members throughout the year.
Membership
Membership in a Lions club provides people with the opportunity to meet and work with other individuals in a spirit of fellowship, striving toward the common goal of helping those in need. Through your mutual concern for others, members can improve both local and global communities while developing valuable personal and professional skills.
New members are expected to give freely of their time and energy whenever possible, attend Club meetings, be available for committee assignments, be knowledgeable about the aims and objectives of Lions and support Club officers.
The benefits of Lions Club membership are numerous, and could include:

WHERE THERE’S A NEED...
As soon as we heard that the Shacks at Princess Informal Settlement were on fire, from our young prospective Leo Joshua who lives there, the Lions Club of Wilro Park and the Lions Club of Roodepoort Host immediately sprung into action, we collected 40 bags of clothes for men, women and children as well as blankets, food and school stationery and together with a number of Lions from the two clubs headed down to the Informal settlement to assist those who had lost all their belongings, including the children who urgently needed to replace their school bags and stationery.
We are very grateful to everyone who responded to our appeals for help and dropped off clothes and food at the Lions Club of Wilro Park Community Centre Collection Point and to the companies who assisted us with donations for the students. Zone Chairman Walter handed over 3 SCHOOL IN A BAG Samsung tablets and accessories to the students from the Informal Settlement and they were very excited and grateful for this!
“Where there’s a Need, there’s a Lion” but actually there were a whole lot of Lions who willingly gave up their time to help those in need as quickly as possible. So together with 10 Lions and our Prospective Lion Patience and her daughter with her sister Lion Tinashe from the Harare Phoenix Lions Club in Zimbabwe and her daughter Leo Tiffany joined us to help hand out the parcels and ensure that the right people received help. Families lost everything but we hope that we have made their load a little lighter.
