I have always been good at explaining things for others, so I want to work on my language practice by making posts to help others! If I make any mistakes, please correct me! I am obviously not an expert and I will accept any and all critique for what I am teaching.
My current languages are Korean, Spanish, and American Sign Language. I will be focusing a lot on Korean most likely as I am taking classes in it at my college currently. I will try to post consistently, but I cannot confirm how often I will be able to.

good korean shows/videos for simple listening practice?
hi! im currently studying Korean at my college, and im going into advanced 1. i’ve been online only since midway through beginning 1. I will be going back on campus this fall, and im a bit anxious to be back in person again.
are there any shows or videos that you think would especially helpful for me to get more comfortable with listening to audio again? I feel like I haven’t had as much practice as I would’ve liked :(
im kinda wanting to watch some youtubers, i’d love recommendations for them especially.
(you don’t have to read the rest, it is just a bit of other info about my situation)
I was struggling with intermediate 1 and 2 a bit because I was taking it during the worst of my migraines and the start of my hearing issues, but I was able to succeed due to having everything recorded and I could listen back.
im scared about not having that in the fall, even though this is something necessary for learning a language, which is why i want to practice a lot before the semester starts. Im getting some accommodations until I figure out a solution for the issues or just until I graduate in december, but I doubt it’ll exempt me from answering questions in class.

Deaf Metal- Jewelry for Hearing Aids & Cochlear Implants
I just saw the coolest thing! There’s a company called Deaf Metal that makes jewelry specifically designed to accessorize hearing aids and cochlear implants! They’re made of hypoallergenic silver and use a cool little silicone sling to attach the jewelry to your existing device.
They create designs for people of all ages, gender presentations, and personal styles. For the hearing aid designs, they have designs that go behind the ear as well as ones that slide onto the pipe going into the ear. They’re designed to be fashionable but not decrease function!
They advertise them as a way to both help you accessorize and to help you keep your hearing aids as findable as possible in the event that you misplace one, or in the case that your hearing aid slips off. Their safety chain options are available in both adults and children’s designs.
They’re designed by a Finnish HOH designer named Jenni Ahtiainen who has previously done accessory work for people like Snoop Dog & Bono. She believes that hearing aids & cochlear implants should be like glasses, you should be able to style them to your liking. All the products range in cost from $15-50 and if you only wear a hearing aid in one ear, many designs offer the option of purchasing an earring for your other ear so you can match! You can see her other design work at @gtiejenni and @gtieneckwear.
Deaf Metal sells & ships worldwide (USA, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Norway, Finland, and France, to name a few) from their online store and their amazon shop. They also have some brick and mortar retailers that carry their designs in Norway and Finland.
You can find their website in this post’s sources.

a friendly reminder that microaggressions against asians can also look like this:
pretending to gag at asian food
pretending to be weirded out by asian customs and cultures
excusing cultural appropriation (often through ignoring the stories of asians who have been mocked for wearing their ethnic dress while praising a white person for doing so)
not trying to learn how to pronounce an asian person's ethnic name correctly, or asking, "can i call you by something else?"
adopting an asian name for the ~aesthetic~
using the words "oriental" and "exotic" to describe asian people, particular asian women
ignoring the experiences and stories of south, southeast, *edit* west asians, and central asians
making sweeping assumptions about asian countries (including their political, historical and cultural landscape)
treating the entire asian community as a monolith and ignoring the fact that the experiences of asian nationals are remarkably different from the asian diaspora/migrant community
co-opting asian aesthetics into creative media without acknowledging their history

hearing issues as a language learner and a linguist
if any other language learners have experience with this, i’d love to hear from yall.
i’m a person who has been a language learner since I was a kid. I have been studying, and wanting to study, languages since I was in elementary school. it’s something i’ve always been passionate about.
I learned in the past year or so that i likely have fluctuating hearing loss. the reasoning requires some lengthy explanation, so I don’t want to bore anyone that doesn’t care to know.
it’s not always an issue, but at times, it feels like I can’t focus on words almost at all. it’s like I hear sounds but not theyre not processing. i’ll be doing my korean assignments for class, and i’ll be on an audio part and I get so frustrated because it’s like I just cannot understand what i’m hearing at all. i’ve been avoiding the doctor to find out for sure because i’m scared, even though I know it’ll be better if I get it fixed.
so often I just get so upset and down because I feel like if I continue to lose my hearing, i’ll lose the main thing i’m passionate about. i’ll no longer be able to do my dream career. my major in linguistics will be so hard to use if I can’t even hear.
if anyone else is in a similar position as I am, i’d love to hear from y’all about your experiences and if anyone wants to talk about anything like this feel free to reach out, i’m happy to hear from others about anything.
but hey, on the bright side, at least I already was studying sign language before I found this out aha. thanks past me for that being something you really wanted to do.
