Summary:

After Makkachin passed away, Yuuri and Viktor decide to adopt a new companion. That leads them to share memories of the first time they met Vicchan and Makkachin... A bittersweet story full of love.

New one-shot: a magic spell so Viktor/Makka can skate together one last time 😭

If you're in the mood for some post-canon hurt/comfort with a magic twist, I hope you'll check out my newest one-shot, revolving around Yuuri's desperation to ensure that, before Makkachin's imminent passing, that she and Viktor get to skate together one last time, just as they did when she was a puppy. 😭

Obviously, even with the humor I've attempted to inject into this fic, loss/grief is a heavy topic. So, if pet death is a difficult subject for you, I'd avoid reading this.

Even so, this is ultimately a healing story about Makka's unconditional love for Viktor, as well as the ample support that Viktor and Yuuri have in their lives as they navigate the transition around her passing.

Below is an excerpt that I hope piques your interest!

(Also: @lines-on-ice, the Yuri on the Web 'Loss' prompt for the Milestones 2 year-anniversary event is what motivated me to take this WIP to the finish line, so thank you for that! I'm not super active in the server currently, but I'm hoping this can be the start of my changing that ☺️)

Yuuri’s head spun, not sure where to turn his attention first.

In the span of just the last half-minute, he had been awoken abruptly, witnessed Viktor in the beginning stages of what was surely a full-on breakdown – that, judging by the overlapping yips he was now registering, seemed to have woken up more than one of their dogs  – and heard a loud series of raps on their bedroom door.

The latter was accompanied by Yurio and Mila’s harried voices. 

“What the hell is going on in there, Katsudon?! Did one of you geezers fall off the bed mid-sexcapade and break a hip?!”

“YOU GUYS?! What’s the matter? Is it Makka? Is she ok?!”

At Mila’s mention of their pup’s name, Viktor slumped against the headboard, weeping freely once again.

Feeling around for his glasses, Yuuri managed to get them on though his hand badly shook. Then, he turned to where he could hear the dogs crowding around him and Viktor, feeling equal parts afraid and elated around what he might discover. 

Flutters of hope beat desperately around his ribcage, and then transformed into a torrent at the spitting image of Vicchan prancing around on their bed. The sight of the ‘Makkachin Katsuki-Nikiforov’ collar that was now several sizes too big nearly set Yuuri off bawling as well. 

Puppy Makka looked to be somewhere around 1 month old, if the spell Hasetsu’s local witch had cast yesterday had been granted with the precision Yuuri had requested. So unlike her pain-filled, present-day state, she was wriggling with a level of energy that he hadn’t seen from her in years. 

Maybe ever, even.

“It worked,” Yuuri muttered, in an awed whisper.

With his heart fit to bursting, he scooped her up, tears welling in his eyes as he nuzzled against her ears which were as soft and floppy as ever. There was no mistaking this for any other typical day with how light she felt in his arms, the complete absence of any grey in her fur, and the fact that she wasn’t whimpering with pain as she’d been, last night. 

“Oh my god! OH MY GOD!!!”

Half-laughing, half-crying, Yuuri glanced over at Viktor, now almost positive of what he’d find once he got his spouse to sit up and show his face.

Viktor had begun growing his hair out immediately after he’d retired last March, so the visual of his long, silken locks wasn’t enough evidence that Rin-san’s age regression spell had fully worked. Although (and Yuuri would never actually admit this to him, even under threat of death), he had to admit that his hair did seem a bit thicker than usual…

“Viten’ka, don’t be scared! I know what’s going on!!” he said, urgently, hunching over to kiss the top of his head. “Just please trust me, love, I’ll explain in a second ok? But first, I need you to look at me.”

At this, Viktor’s breath hitched and his sobbing subsided, but only slightly. With slow, heavy movements, he made to push a few of his long, sleep-rumpled locks off of his face before sitting up. 

When he finally lifted his head, Yuuri felt his heart stop. 

It was unmistakable: sixteen-year-old Viktor Nikiforov stared back at him, with his face as blotchy as Yuuri had ever seen it and those blue eyes as piercing as always, even when red-rimmed.

When the Ice Answers Yuri on Ice Fanfic by MythboundCal

The music begins. But Yuri doesn’t hear it.

He hears breath. His own—ragged, sharp, then steady. Like wind through glass.

He steps onto the ice like it’s a love letter. As if saying it without words might make it true. That he’s strong. That he’s worthy. That he wants this.

The first glide is everything. It’s not movement. It’s memory.

And just like that— The letter becomes a vow.

He thinks of late nights and early mornings. Of Victor’s hand on his back. Of the sound his blades make when he finally lets go.

The rink becomes a galaxy. The spotlight, his moonlight. And overhead, the flashing of cameras Spirals into stars.

He gives himself to the moment. Every stumble, every sweat-stained failure, Every heartbreak etched into his spine— He offers it all to the ice.

And the ice? The ice answers.

By the final spin, he’s not skating anymore. He’s flying. Not to escape. But to arrive.

When he stops, there’s silence.

And then— Applause.

But none of that matters. Because now he knows:

I don't reblog art that isn't signed/watermarked in the image, because I've heard too many artists complain about their art being copied and stolen and put on other platforms and I've seen too many "DO YOU KNOW WHO THE ARTIST IS???" posts. I don't want to participate in that.

But sometimes.

I see a beautiful art, the kind that makes me drool all over, compelling, beautiful, and here I am, zooming through every centimeter of it trying to find the hint of an initial because I want to spread it so bad but why isn't it siiiiigned?

And I'm starting to think, maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's more important to spread it anyway. It lasts until the next lost art/stolen art post at least...
