How language shapes the way we think
The Evolution of Hound Dog
Just listened to Hound Dog by Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley, and Doja Cat, and the way this song has changed over time says so much about music and who gets credit.
Big Mama Thornton’s 1952 version? Raw, bluesy, full of power. Then Elvis comes in 1956, turns it into a rock hit, and gets all the fame. Doja Cat’s 2022 remix flips it again, blending hip-hop and pop.
This got me thinking about cultural appropriation vs. appreciation—how Black artists built the foundation of rock and roll but didn’t get the same recognition. It’s not just history; it’s still happening today.
Music evolves, but we have to acknowledge who started it. Hound Dog isn’t just a song—it’s a reminder of that.

Big fish or small pond?
Just listened to Freakonomics talk about whether it’s better to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big one.
In high school, I stood out academically, but college? Whole different story. Suddenly, I was surrounded by people just as smart, and imposter syndrome hit hard. This idea ties into mental health, school choice, and how we define success.
No one-size-fits-all answer, but one thing’s clear: it’s not just about the pond—it’s about how you adapt.

Constitution Day
Just watched Schoolhouse Rock and listened to “Non-Stop” from Hamilton , and it hit me how both use music to bring history to life, but in totally different ways. Schoolhouse Rock simplifies big ideas for kids, while Hamilton remixes history with hip-hop and a diverse cast, making it feel immediate and relevant. It reminded me of my grandma’s immigration story from Guatemala—how even quieter, everyday struggles are part of the bigger historical narrative. It’s also a reminder that history isn’t one story—it’s all of our voices, and how we tell it matters.

AI Won’t Replace Humans — But Humans With AI Will Replace Humans Without AI
AI is a tool that can make us better at what we do, and people who know how to use it will do better than those who stick to old ways. The main point is that we need to learn how to work with AI if we want to keep up in the changing job market.
