why does time pass so quickly, but so slowly? why am i always running out of time or watching as the second ticks by excruciatingly slow. why am i only 18? but why am i already 18? how has the year not passed yet? but how has it already october? i feel like i’ve been in uni forever but what do u mean i’ve nearly finished my first year in uni? my assignment is overdue i just need time to stop so i can get it done, but every time i look up at the clock another half hour has passed. how did that happen?

sigh..i hate uni, why can’t i just consume marauders content all day everyday, why do i have to go to work, go to uni, do assignments. i don’t want to do anything but consume content. sigh.

I think that Regulus Black is such an interesting character and that’s mostly because we’re told of his character through other people’s perspectives - we never meet him directly.

Slughorn: I got his brother Regulus when he came along, but I'd have liked the set.

indicates that Slughorn thought highly of the Black Family, Regulus included.

Sirius: My idiot brother, soft enough to believe them.

We know that the Black Brothers had a complex relationship but this reveals a key part of his character - he was soft, easily influenced. He would take the path of least resistance, he'd please his parents before doing the right thing.

His note:  I want you to know that it was I who discovered your secret... I face death in the hope that when you meet your match, you will be mortal once more. 

Arguably this tells us that something happens that turns Regulus from the 'soft' boy that Sirius knew, to someone who would knowingly betray his parents and the path laid out for him. This gives us some indication that he's had a moral compass all along - he just chooses to ignore it. He either betrays the Dark Lord because he realises he is on the wrong side or more likely, he does it out of a sense of spite.

Kreacher: And he ordered — Kreacher to leave — without him. And he told Kreacher—to go home—and never to tell my Mistress—what he had done—but to destroy— the first locket.

Regulus had some form of affection or caring for Kreacher, trusted him enough to help him and to keep his secret. We can infer he's loyal but not to a fault.

I think that sometimes we can make his character cold, and overly competent but this raises the question of is it detrimental to his character?

The beauty of Regulus' character is that he is a tragedy by design. We learn of what he does in Deathly Hallows, but we're left to infer why. Despite ultimately giving up everything, we know that he really achieves nothing. We can paint him out to be a secret, surprise hero but we all know how the story plays out otherwise.

To most people, including his brother - he's a no name deatheater who was a victim of the first war. Yes, he found one horcrux, but he couldn't destroy it or find the others. Ultimately, his actions make the task for Harry just that much more challenging.

We talk about 'haunting the narrative' but Regulus is a character that couldn't ever reside over the story. We have Lily who truly does haunt the narrative but in contrast, how could Regulus when no one would even recognise his ghost?

His story is purposefully sad. This is why it sticks with us. All we get is actions which leaves the reader to fill in the reasons. We all curate Regulus Black slightly differently to each other. I think that this is what makes him such an interesting and revered character.

hhh okay, how do i say this properly

i think a lot of people are mischaracterising so many marauders characters because we get a bit too carried away with some of their characteristics.

regulus black, oh my dear boy. regulus was not brave like his brother, he was sly, often cowardice, he could not stick up to his parents like sirius could. from canon, we can see that he shared the same morals as sirius when he betrayed voldemort, yet he let himself be marked, he let himself do voldemorts bidding and become a death eater, because he had no back bone, he was scared and alone.

i think in fanon, people make out regulus to be this super confident guy who doesn't really give a fuck what you say to him, he'll tell you to fuck off and thinks he's better then everyone in a snobby sort of way, or doesn't care about anyone but his friends.

i dont think thats tru tho, i think he cares so deeply about everyones opinions, i think he's shy, quiet and reserved and so so scared. I look at his canon death and i think, did he only do it because voldemort nearly killed kreature? the one person who stayed with regulus and genuinly cared for him? or did he see how voldemort didn't care for living things and decided enough was enough? regardless, a lot of depictions of regulus' death show him terrified of death, but in a way im not so sure he was (wow this post is all over the place i hope u guys get the gist).

i think regulus was okay with dying, like it was the best option as it was his choice, he wouldn't be punished by his parents, he wouldn't be killed by voldemort, but would die by his own actions. i've been thinking about this a lot, and about how, regulus' death sort of (and just walk with me here) shows his cowardice traits, because he didn't have to deal with the consequences of his actions (ignoring the fact that no one knew what he did until harry). No one could punish him for his betrayal, he could just... do it, and no longer live, but what did he have to live for? abusive parents? serving a dark lord? yk what i mean? it's like he sacrificed nothing and was able to go out on his own, which of course is bravery in itself.

BUT the main take away message from this post is that regulus is not a sly black cat who will hiss and scratch!! he has no back bone!! i feel like people have sort of taken a lot of draco's traits and slapped them on regulus, let my boy be pathetic

regulus is a loser, he’s so socially awkward it’s painful.

to everyone but his friends and brother, he’s this like this super scary stoic guy, but literally only bc no one talks to him, if he doesn’t open his mouth, he can keep up this facade.

he can’t seem to put his inside personality into his outside personality, when he talks to his friends he’ll try to make a joke that just doesn’t land and he has to awkwardly laugh at it, then he beats himself up about it cuz ‘that’s literally not me!! that’s not what i’m like! why did i say that’

he can’t keep up a conversation, and even though he’s so close with his friends and tells them everything, he can’t help but turn a conversation awkward, by replying with something that just… doesn’t fit, or being super dry and ending the convo cuz he doesn’t know what else to say

his tone is awkward, which just..ugh turns everything to shit

regulus is just an awkward person!! he wasn’t socialised properly as a kid

I can’t see Regulus as someone confident in himself, at least not at first. I can’t see him dating around or sleeping around or being experienced, he’s awkward and quiet and prefers reading books to talking to people and he cries at the same movie he’s been watching since he was seven and he hates confrontation and he aches for affection and attention and someone to listen to him and to choose him for once, he’s so insecure and anxiety riddled that it consumes his everyday life, he’s depressed and he’s bored but he has moments of happiness that make him so giddy he can’t shut up when he starts talking, he’s loyal and he’s all consuming and he’s just really fucking weird
