Here is how I fell in love with #JungHaeIn!
#Snowdrop #DP #SomethingInTheRain #KoreanDramas #SouthKorea
It was raining Korean dramas in my head. And guess what! The man who held an umbrella was none other than Jung Hae In. If you are a South Korean drama fan, you might have already guessed. Yes, I am talking about Jung Hae In and Son Ye Jin starrer drama “Something In The Rain.”
There was romance, passion, youth, complexities and I really felt like I was watching the story of my life in a Korean screen! No doubt I fell for the “realist” Jung Hae In. This was four years ago. And today after many dramas I still have a crush on Jung Hae In and with his latest stint “Snowdrop” he has shown again that he will not let his fans get disappointed.
I really love the way Jung Hae In chooses his scripts. Recently, I read an article stating, Jung Hae In’s choice of scripts is the main let down, when Snowdrop courted controversies. But I completely refute that argument, because one needs guts to choose the topics which were finalized by Jung Hae In.
From romantic drama Something In The Rain, one can see immense growth in Jung Hae In as an actor. When most of the actors still hesitate to take up roles of a married man, or a father, Jung Hae in played a single father in his second drama (as the full-fledged male lead) “One Spring Night”. He showed a different side of himself, while continuing to flutter many hearts with his subtle and mature acting.
The next script he chose was Tune In For Love opposite Kim Go Eun. It is a love story of two people from humble but troubled backgrounds. Both the actors showed an awesome chemistry and portrayed contradictions perfectly. With this, the actor Jung Hae In won a permanent spot in my heart.
Then came A Piece Of Your Mind. Though the storyline was unique, Jung Hae In looked dashing as an AI programmer opposite Chae Soo Bin, this drama failed to impress me. I watched it for the love of Jung Hae In but seriously felt the drama was very slow and wondered what would be his next choice!
But the dullness caused by this drama was completely eradicated by web series “D.P.” Jung Hai in played the role of a man enlisted in the military and given the responsibility of bringing deserters back to the camp. The dark web series again provided Jung Hae in ample scope to prove his acting skills, be it action, emotion, regret and even lack of emotion! What a performance! The web series was such a hit that soon he will start filming for the second season of D.P. and I can’t wait for its release.
However, the drama which made headlines even before the first episode was aired was drama “Snowdrop”. Initially it made news as it is BLACKPINK Jisoo’s first drama as the female lead. This was followed by a controversy when a part of the script was leaked online that claimed distortion of history and glorification of North Korean spies.
There was a hue and cry to boycott the drama. The filming was stopped temporarily. But then the channel JTBC assured that the rumors were far from the truth and that there was no distortion of history involved. The channel also rubbished rumors that there was any glorification of spies.
But with airing of first two episodes it had become clear that Jung Hae In was playing the role of a North Korean spy who is saved by the South Korean college student (Jisoo) and eventually he ends up taking the entire girls hostel dorm as hostage.
The demand to boycott the drama grew and there was a Blue House petition to ban the drama. However, the court ruled in favour of the drama but Jung Hae In was criticized in the media for choosing to play Lim Soo Ho, a North Korean spy.
But the drama is about how those brainwashed with extreme ideologies are ‘used’ by the governments for their benefit. It is the story of both the governments (Govt of South Korea and North Korea) abandoning their agents and trying to kill the hostel inmates just for political gains! Though hard, agents of both nations join hand to save people and fight against the powerful government forces.
I, personally am happy that Jung Hae In took up such a challenging role. Without being over the top, he has portrayed Lim Soo Ho perfectly, because when he holds the girls as hostage, despite having soft corner for Jung Hae In, one cannot help but hate Lim Soo Ho!
One more factor that needs a special mention is whether it is D.P. or Snowdrop, Jung Hae In plays subordinate who has to bow to the decisions of his seniors. Even when situation demands he cannot fight against evil like a hero. He is tied up with many circumstances that make him helpless. But he earnestly puts in an effort with his colleagues to fight the evil.
Thus there is no factor of heroism and it feels like a story from the real world. Being a hero doesn’t mean having supernatural powers or winning a battle even without a logical end, but facing it as it is even with all the shortcomings. That’s why, kudos to Jung Hae in for choosing such challenging roles. He will remain as a “Snowdrop” in my heart as I eagerly wait for his chase with deserters in the upcoming web series D.P.
