Second fic!! Take place basically directly after Deltarune: Chapter 3 (Sword Route)
This one's like kinda dark and a bit violent conpared to my other fic, mainly because the entire thing was just an excuse to write Kris vs. RK
Apologies if the Knight is characterized weird or smth in this one, I just kinda went with my gut and stuff lol

Behold, some of my thoughts on Deltarune. This post assumes you've played all four chapters.
This felt all over the place while I was writing so I apologize if it's hard to follow. This post is a combination of theory, headcanon, and speculation, so don't take it too seriously. If I missed anything or if there's contradictory evidence, please share so that I can learn.
My personal reading of the story so far is that the red SOUL of the player is an otherworldly entity (possibly the angel? Idk) that was beckoned to Deltarune by W.D. Gaster before being stolen by Carol and Kris for their own purposes.
I believe that the "secret" things (Sword Route, Shadow Crystals, Eggs) are related to a traumatic event in Kris' childhood, the memories of which they are trying to suppress, and that this traumatic event is the disappearance of Dess.
The voice seen in the vessel creation segment, Knight fight deaths, and Ch.4 credits is most likely Gaster imo. Similar speech patterns, "My Delta Rune", Another Him has Gaster's leitmotif in it, and it would be narratively satisfying to finally have payoff for Undertale's Gaster stuff.
(On a separate and unrelated note, I like to think UT Gaster is only his universe's equivalent, and not the same person as DR Gaster—thus explaining the song being titled "Another Him".)
Anyways,
The voice speaks of making contact, and then starts building you a vessel and modelling it after you, presumably because we need a living host and he didn't want our vessel to disobey us or smth like Kris. This sequence gets interrupted by another voice (one with no soundbyte) who tells us we don't get to choose who we are in this world.
I believe that this voice is Kris specifically, but tbh I don't have much evidence that couldn't be used to support other readings. Kris is working with Carol and the Knight, Carol and Kris are seemingly taking advantage of the SOUL to some extent (why else would they have it if not to use it?), Kris themself has the SOUL, and thus I conclude that Kris specifically took it from the vessel creation sequence.
Now, I don't think Kris is soulless or smth or that it IS Kris' soul somehow, partly because in Ch.4 they seem to swing that hockey stick just fine without us and because iirc I don't think we see ANYONE'S soul in Deltarune besides our red one. I think the limping around and stuff is just them being tired after painfully ripping something out of their chest. Maybe it was bound to their own soul or smth but like you can't really prove smth like that with what we have so far. FURTHERMORE, one last final thing, the SOUL is most definitely new. I cite Noelle's end of Ch.1 dialogue ("you're weirdly talkative") and Rudy's Ch.1 hospital dialogue regarding the letter (smth about how it looks like Kris hadn't seen their own signature before, I forgot the specifics).
Moving on,
Carol knows what the deal is with the SOUL ("As you know, YOU are always welcome here"), and has access to the bunker where the Knight hides. She is probably working with the Knight, like Kris. The Knight has had MANY MANY chances to both start the Roaring and just flat out kill the Delta Warriors. All the Knight does is take the team down to 1 HP, and then hover just out of reach. We know it is actively choosing to let them continue, because it is fully capable of wiping them out easily (as seen in Ch.3). Why?
I believe it is because the point isn't to start the Roaring or whatever as we're being led to believe, it's to make the SOUL and its light stronger. For what purpose is up for debate, but I like to think it relates directly to the Knight's shadow/void/Titan-like physical condition and/or whatever horror(s) lies within the Shelter.
Each chapter has incremently more powerful opponents. In Ch.4 the SOUL is capable of completely obliterating the Titan once inside, although in such a precarious position this is hardly a "normal" approach to killing one. I doubt the SOUL would be capable of such a thing in Ch.1, because according to Ralsei it was apparently a miracle that the Titan could be defeated in the first place at our current strength. Also, like, if Kris Susie and Ralsei all get stronger why wouldn't we?
So why are Carol and Kris trying to make the SOUL stronger and brighter?
We know that Kris made a promise to someone, and that it is why they keep putting up with the SOUL even though it is taking a serious toll on them. Whether or not it was to Carol specifically I think doesn't matter, as it still involves her enough to the point where she is using it as leverage against Kris.
I doubt that Carol is outright evil or anything, at most just misguided or misled. Toby Fox doesn't really write EVIL characters like that and I doubt Carol of all people will be the first.
Me personally, I believe this to be what's up:
Something terrible happened to December Holiday, Kris witnessed it, and they feel responsible for it somehow. I believe that the unspecified traumatic event in Kris' past is what turned Dess into the Roaring Knight, and that the promise Kris made was to fix her.
I think Carol believes that if the SOUL's brilliant light was strong enough, it could purify Dess' shadowy condition (and perhaps even the Shelter? Idk what to think of it so far besides it being the current best candidate for the final dark world).
I think the egg rooms are memories of the event that Kris is suppressing, and that by collecting all of the eggs we'll get to find out what really happened there or smth like that. The egg rooms have creepy music playing, the Ch.3 egg heavily relates to Kris' childhood, and the Ch.4 egg implies Kris went to art therapy for smth so traumatic that they felt they could "never wash it all away".
The Shadow Crystals relate to this through the Shadow Mantle Holder, who I will refer to as "Eram" for brevity's sake even tho that isn't confirmed to be its name. Eram taunts Kris as if they were close, Kris seemingly does not like the insinuation that they "enjoy" any part of the SOUL's possession or actions (Eram even calls out Snowgrave stuff specifically if you did it). The Shadow Mantle game seems to be "intended" to inspire Kris to be cruel—to some extent. Eram seems to treat it like that, at least. They think Kris enjoys being cruel or frightening.
Eram's fight theme is BURNING EYES. It describes Kris' eyes at the end of their fight with a fire metaphor, then mentions that "without play, the knife grows dull". Noelle's ICE-E cryptid sighting specifically calls attention to the burnt out eyes of the box that Kris used to scare her. I think the underlying idea being communicated here is that Kris likes feeling scary or dangerous for whatever reason, and that they don't like that feeling anymore judging by their "sour face".
While the Shadow Crystals don't seem to have the biggest connections to them, 2 out of 4 were directly related to Kris (Spamton and the Knight). Jevil was kinda neutral either way, and while Gerson was obviously "for" Susie he had specific words of wisdom to give Kris. I just think it's important to point them out because Eram specifically says "that's why you're after the shadow crystals, aren't you? And the shadow mantle that I'm holding!", these elements have to be connected on some level if Eram mentioned them like that.
Why do I think this relates back to Dess' disappearance and Kris' promise? Well, I think Kris feels guilty about what happened to Dess, and I think that guilt is connected to their desire to be frightening to some extent. I don't really have much evidence for this tbh but you know, we're only halfway through the game rn.
Imo the Knight is almost certainly Dess, and frankly to disprove it you'd first need to explain why Lost Girl would play for someone who isn't Dess (Noelle doesn't count that's different). Also other stuff, but this isn't about proving Dess!Knight.
I could go further but I feel like at that point I should just write a script for a youtube video or smth
