     “You honor me, Master… Yoshi.” He couldn’t bring himself to call this man Splinter, since for all intents and purposes, he was a completely different person. Very distinctly different memories and personality, and Leonardo couldn’t call somebody else the name of his own Father like that. It just wouldn’t be right. He reaches down and sips his tea lightly. “You’re much like how my master described you. It’s… nearly uncanny.”

     “Oh. Thank you” Splinter said, honestly not knowing what else to say. He just bowed back politely, secretly wracking his mind trying to figure out who this turtle’s master could be and how he knew him.     The turtle was certainly a lot like his own Leonardo in many ways… and in other ways, very different.

         “… if I may ask, how did he describe me?” Splinter questioned, as much out of genuine curiosity as a desire for a clue.

     “…A kind, noble warrior. A gentle soul, full of passion to help people honorably.” Leonardo was no fool, and he was fairly good at reading somebody’s intent, even if it was being masked by someone as skilled as the one before him. It was clear his vague comments had caught the other’s interest. “My master was… a student of Hamato Yoshi. In my world, Yoshi was struck down by the Shredder many years ago.”

     As much as he valued being respected, Splinter was almost embarrassed to be talked to like this. It wasn’t often he was afraid he wouldn’t live up to someone’s expectations.       Just as the alternate Leonardo began to explain his master’s background, he spoke of the fate of the Hamato Yoshi of his own world And in that moment, the tea cup in Splinter’s hands shattered.

         His grip had tightened so suddenly and so violently that it had broken and fallen to pieces in front of him. As could be imagined, this didn’t at all help Splinter’s embarrassment, he could only be thankful that he hadn’t added the hot water yet as he and began to sweep the pieces together into his palm.            “I’m sorry”       He couldn’t explain the sense of utter dread that came with that revelation. It was no secret that his own Shredder was actively, obsessively trying to kill him, but the fact that in some other world he had been successful had a surprisingly strong effect on him.

    “How did it happen?” he ventured to ask after a long pause, nervous to know the answer, but too afraid of what might happen if he didn’t know the answer not to ask.

     “-Here, let me help you.” Leo plucked some of the pieces up himself, it was the least he could do for how much he seemed to startle the man. When it became clear that he had regained composure, Leonardo gave a curt bow and continued. “From what I’ve been told… your Shredder is much different than the one my brothers and I fought.” Understatement of the millennium. “Oroku Saki is only a name he used. His real name… was Ch’rell.”

     A beat, then he continued. “Shredder was an Alien called an ‘Utrom.’ They created the ooze- er, the mutagen. They had crashed on Earth during the feudal period, and remained up until a couple years ago. Shredder was a war criminal they were transferring.” The solemn look on Leonardo’s face spoke a thousand words. “…About twenty years ago, Yoshi became a protector of the Utroms, and…. he paid for it with his life.”

     A moment is taken to reflect on the words his father had repeated to them dozens of times. “‘He who lives without honor, will end, without honor.’ Those were his final words, so I am told.”

      ”That is… not a bad piece of wisdom to go out on” Splinter said after a moment, taking a few seconds to chew on everything that had been told to him. The story was brief, but it was still a lot to take in, and somehow it did little to ease his dread regarding his alternate self’s demise.

           “The differences between the Hamato Yoshis of your word and mine seem to be almost as numerous as the differences between the Oroku Sakis” Splinter admitted, almost apologetically “As you seem to have already heard, my Shredder was no alien war criminal, just a man that allowed himself to become a monster, and I hadn’t even heard of an Utrom until a few months ago.” Splinter held the pieces of the broken cup in his lap, unsure where else to put them as he didn’t see a dustbin anywhere, and he was a little too wrapped up in the current conversation to start looking for one.

       “As for who I protect, it usually doesn’t extend beyond my family, and more often than not they are capable of taking care of themselves.     … Speaking of, I still don’t quite know who it is that taught you and your brothers. Was he a student of the Hamato Yoshi of your world?”

     “No, no. I’m aware… you’re just… so much like the stories I’ve heard.” No, they were not the same man in terms of history, but in spirit? Absolutely. He could see why Master Splinter admired his master so much, even though in truth, not a word was ever exchanged between them. Which brought him to the elephant in the room.

     “…I was getting to that. You… may want to brace yourself. Yoshi… had a pet rat, one cared for by his late love Tang Shen. When Yoshi was killed, that pet rat escaped and well…” Leo looked the elder in the eye directly. “My father’s name is Hamato Splinter.”

     Splinter felt a little unsure about the comparison. Being held up to the standard of someone who had given his life standing in the face of danger to protect an alien race felt… incorrect. Not that he considered himself a coward, but it seemed like more an honor better befitting his sons.

      Suddenly, his eyes widened and his ears pricked up as the turtle mentioned the name of his wife                              “… Tang Shen?” he said softly 

    He recalled her having a pet rat many years ago; a small white thing named Kumo, a fearless and affectionate creature. It died of old age long before they married, but the story of Shen’s pet was the furthest thing from his mind at the moment.

                                    “There’s a Tang Shen in your world?”

     “I’m sorry, but no. She died a very long time ago, much longer than Yoshi. I’m… told she was very beautiful, and caring.” Leonardo felt bad reiterating this point, but he wasn’t about to give the… man, false hope. “My Master doesn’t even remember her, his memory seems to mostly recall Yoshi. I would tell you more if I knew more, but I only know the story.”

     A moment for pause. “I’m sorry if I’m coming across the wrong way, but your existence is… bizarre to me. You have the same name and general appearance as my sensei, my father, and yet you aren’t the same person. It’s… very surreal.”

     He smirked, taking a seat on their couch. Kid had a good heart at least, a bit naive, but well meaning. Unfortunately, life was never that simple, especially when you were a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

A small pair of turtle eggs are at Mikey's doorstep. Both bundled up in thick blankets due to the fall air.

Mikey stared down. He had no idea what to make of what he was looking at and no idea why they were there. But he did know he couldn’t just leave them there.  He gingerly picked them up and brought them inside, setting them carefully on the table in their respective bundles.

“Hey Don?”

“Yeah?”

“C’mere. We uh, got a package I think you need to see.”
