Making active user metrics more detailed in the Admin console

Hangouts Meet
Who’s impacted
Admins only
Why this matters
Previously, we pulled app activity data from multiple sources, which sometimes resulted in discrepancies across reporting tools, like Work Insights and the Reports section of the Admin console. To ensure these metrics are consistent, we’ll now pull data from one centralized, reliable source which is based on direct user interaction logs. This will help you better analyze app usage in your domain and assess your organization’s needs.
How to get started
Admins: To access Apps usage activity in the Admin console click Reports.
From there, you can see app usage overall, or click into specific apps.
On the right-hand side, you can filter app usage by: 1 day, 7 days, or 30 days.
End users: No action required.
Additional details
In addition to the Admin console, these updated metrics will also appear in the G Suite Admin SDK Reports API and BigQuery exports.

Get G Suite adoption and collaboration insights with Work Insights, now generally available

Our Work Insights adoption and collaboration insights tool is now generally available for G Suite Enterprise customers. You can use Work Insights to quickly understand the status and impact of your G Suite deployment, surfacing organizational insights around adoption, work patterns, and collaboration across G Suite apps.
Work Insights was previously available in beta. For more details about the Work Insights tool, see our beta announcement or our Help Center. Since the beta, we’ve added the ability to quickly surface usage of legacy non-G Suite applications within an organization, as well as added more powerful filtering capabilities via groups filtering. See below for more details.
Who’s impacted
Admins only. Work Insights is accessible to super admins and delegated admins. See how to grant access to Work Insights.
Why you’d use it
Work Insights can bring you executive-level insights into how G Suite is increasing collaboration and improving workplace culture at your organization. You can view the Work Insights dashboard and get insights into:
Adoption – which teams are adopting G Suite and which apps they use most frequently.
Work patterns – which apps teams are spending time in and how much time they’re spending in meetings.
Collaboration – how teams are working together through meetings, file sharing, and document interactions.
Usage of non-G Suite applications – if there are legacy licenses that no longer need to be renewed as users transition to G Suite.
Note that at the organizational level, team insights will only be shown for teams of 10 people or more. For more details about these insights and how you might use Work Insights, see our beta announcement.
How to get started
Admins: See the Work Insights dashboard at https://apps.google.com/workinsights. Use our Help Center to see more about how to set up Work Insights.
End users: No action needed.
Additional details
New: Get insights into usage of non-G Suite applications Work Insights will now quickly surface data around the usage of legacy non-G Suite applications within an organization. This includes the use of the following:
Microsoft Word documents
Microsoft Word macro files
Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
Microsoft Excel macro files
Microsoft PowerPoint presentations
Microsoft PowerPoint macro files
Seeing how these applications are used can help organizations identify opportunities where remaining legacy licenses no longer need to be renewed as users transition to G Suite.
See usage of non-G Suite apps in Work Insights
New: Filter charts by groups In the beta, you could filter by organizational units and teams to help compare across your organization. Now you can also filter by groups. Administrators can whitelist specific groups to be included as filters for Work Insights.
Groups that are whitelisted will appear in the filtering feature of Work Insights. Users are able to focus on specific groups and unlock the power of Work Insights within subsections of their organization.
This provides an organization with the power to drill deeper into the collaboration data by applying custom groups as a filtering criteria.
Admins can whitelist specific groups to compare in Work Insights
Once groups are whitelisted, you can filter by those groups in Work Insights
Group filtering provides new levels of detail and aids in better understanding how areas of a company are leveraging the collaborative features of G Suite.

To easily view where section breaks are located in your document, you can use the new show section breaks tool by going to View > Show section breaks. When Show selection breaks is enabled, you’ll see a blue dotted line where each section break is located.
Adjust margins per section  It’s now possible to use the ruler to adjust the left and right margins by section. Previously, it was only possible to adjust the margins for the entire document.
If you don’t make a selection, the ruler will adjust the margins for the section that corresponds to the cursor location. Or, you can highlight multiple sections of your doc to be adjusted.

Gmail confidential mode launching on by default on June 25, 2019

Gmail confidential mode launching on by default on June 25, 2019
Originally Posted on Google’s G Suite Updates Blog

Earlier this year, we announced the launch of Gmail confidential mode for G Suite in beta. On June 25, 2019, this feature will become generally available and your users will have the option to send emails with confidential mode.
At launch, confidential mode will be set to default ON for all domains with Gmail enabled, unless you choose to disable this feature (see instructions below).
Who’s impacted
Admins and end users
Why you’d use it
Confidential mode provides built-in information rights management controls in your emails by allowing senders to create expiration dates and revoke previously sent messages. Because a sender can require additional authentication via text message to view an email, it’s also possible to protect data even if a recipient’s email account has been hijacked while the message is active. Additionally, with confidential mode, recipients don’t have the option to forward, copy, print, or download their content or attachments.
How to get started
Admins: As an administrator, you can determine whether your users can use confidential mode by navigating to Apps > G Suite > Settings for Gmail > User settings and selecting from the following options:
Disable: This option will prevent users in your domain from sending emails with confidential mode.
Enable now (beta): This option will enable confidential mode, which is currently in beta. The feature will remain enabled when it enters into general availability on June 25, 2019.
Enable when the feature is in general availability: This is the default option and will enable confidential mode when this feature becomes generally available on June 25, 2019.
End users: Once Gmail confidential mode launches, you can follow the steps in this Help Center article to send & open confidential emails.
Additional details
How Gmail confidential mode works with Vault and eDiscovery When a user sends a confidential message, Gmail replaces the message body and attachments with a link. Only the subject and body containing the link are sent via SMTP. This means that if your users send or receive messages in Gmail confidential mode, Vault will retain, preserve, search and export confidential mode messages. The message body of received messages will be accessible in Vault only if the sender of the message is from within your organization.

Google Security Vulnerabilities and Updates
https://lemacksmedia.com/news/05/22/google-security-vulnerabilities-and-updates/
Google Security Vulnerabilities and Updates
Security self-reporting is a good thing
It has definitely been a rough couple of weeks for Google, at least in terms of security nightmares. Last week Google notified people like myself that the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Titan Security key had a manufacturing flaw that could allow someone to intercept the pairing process. Here’s what Google emailed us:
Hi,
We’ve become aware of an issue affecting the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Titan Security Key that you purchased from the Google Store. This issue does not affect the USB/NFC version of the Titan Security Key.
Recommended actions While it is still safer to use the affected BLE Titan Security Key instead of no key at all, you should do the following for your security:
• Sign in and unpair. After you’ve used your key to sign in to your Google Account on your mobile device, immediately unpair it. Here are instructions for iOS and Android. • Replace your current security key for free by visiting google.com/replacemykey. Important If you don’t replace your key and use a device with iOS 12.3 or higher, you could be locked out of your Google Account. Follow these instructions if you get locked out of your account.
Sincerely, The Google Store team
This isn’t really new-news
Back in January when I was sent my Titan Security Key Bundle by Google, I noted that it was troubling that the 2 keys were made by 2 different manufacturers. This isn’t inherently problematic as a lot of OEM’s outsource their parts and manufacturing. What was troubling was that  the Bluetooth/NFC Titan Security key is made by Chinese company Feitian Technologies which is part of a Chinese Military Alliance. Many security researchers had noted that so long as Feitian hadn’t made any modifications to the FIDO Web Authentication API that they should be fine. At that time, Google hadn’t acknowledged any potential issues.
Well, it looks like the concerns were well warranted, as they usually are now that Google is allowing replacements of the T1 and T2 labeled keys.
G Suite plain text passwords
Well, apparently Admin generated and Google generated temporary passwords have been stored in plain text for years for G Suite users. This isn’t really a huge pressing issue, unless the password the admin generated was not set to be changed by the user upon next sign-in. Google only identified one of our clients as being affected, and it is a user who hasn’t ever signed in. Here’s what we were sent:
Dear Partner,
We are writing to inform you of a technical issue which affected your G Suite customer(s). Please see the below communication that we sent to your customer(s) which contains additional detail.
We sincerely apologize for any impact of this issue to your organization and your customers.
If you have any questions, please let us know by contacting Google Support and referencing issue number ##########.
Sincerely,
The G Suite Team
Here is the message we sent to your affected customers:
Google Customer Alert
Dear G Suite Administrator,
We are writing to inform you that due to legacy functionality that enabled customer Domain Admins to view passwords, some of your users’ passwords were stored in our encrypted systems in an unhashed format. This primarily impacted system generated or admin generated passwords intended for one-time use.
We have reviewed the login information for the user account(s) and have found no evidence that the unhashed passwords were misused.
The following is the list of users impacted in your domain(s):
List of Users Google Planned Action: for your security, starting tomorrow Wednesday May 22, 2019 PT we will force a password change unless it has already been changed prior to that time.
Our password update methodology is as follows:
Users With Single Sign On: We will reset their password by changing it to a randomly generated secure value. Please note that this will have no effect on their ability to log in using their Single Sign On credentials. Other Users and Super Admins: We will terminate their sessions and prompt users to change their password at their next login. In addition, starting Wednesday, May 29, 2019 PT we will reset the password for users that have not yet selected a new password or have not had a password reset. These users will need to follow your organization’s password recovery process. Super Admins will not be impacted. For information on password recovery options please refer to the following Help Center Article. For further questions please contact Google Support and reference issue number ##########.
Sincerely,
The G Suite Team
We’ve identified your customers affected by this issue below:
All-in-all, it’s just another day in the tech industry I guess.
