On a Train, Blinking [OnTae, PG, 1751w]

So… Hi, everybody! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted, so this feels a little strange. I suppose this is a tentative break of my hiatus. This isn’t the fic I took prompts for last week, but I’m having some unexpected trouble with that one (RIP) so I wrote this last night to tide me over until I work through it. I hope you all enjoy, and feel free to drop me a message :)

“I’ve never kissed a boy,” the kid says, and his legs stretch out across the train seats. They cross and uncross at the ankles. Jinki’s taken with them, with the movement of his hands as they wave freely, drawing shapes in the air, like he’s miming it: Kiss. Boy. Never.

“Or a girl. I’ve never kissed anybody. But you know. It’s boys, for me.”

Jinki hums into his paperback. It’s not actually his book. He’d found it on the train just yesterday, and he’ll leave it in another car for somebody else to find when he’s finished. It’s not bad. Some kind of mystery.

“Is that your name? Sukwon?” Kid says, gesturing to the paperback and the sharpie marks on its side.

Jinki smiles. “No,” he says.

Like most Tevinter elves, Jinki and Taemin were born into slavery. They escaped the country in early adulthood and found safety in a clan of Dalish elves before going their separate ways: Jinki staying with the Dalish clan, and Taemin embarking on the travels he’d always dreamed of having. When Jinki visits a human mage named Jonghyun that his clan trades with, he finds Taemin sick in his cabin. Distrustful of the mage and wanting to catch up with his old friend, he visits the cabin over the months and finds himself confronting issues he’d thought long buried.

tension and fighting! jinki has a lot of development in this part, and it’s probably my favorite. ^^ jongyu start to actually talk, and a bit of ontae’s escape is revealed.

Warnings for past sexual abuse, grooming, slavery, animal death, and gore. There isn’t anything graphic regarding the abuse, but it may be triggering.

Huge thanks as always to my lovely friends @minsunshine, @fleckle, and my perfect gf @yurilikesgirls​ for all of their assistance on this story. I couldn’t have done it without y’all!! I wrote all of this in about…two months, after my second playthrough of dragon age: inquisition. It’s is a bit different than anything else I’ve written, in that it bounces between past and present events. My betas thought that keeping those sections in present tense was best, so that is what I did. Hopefully it’s not confusing! But just in case, flashback sections are marked with a different divider (♦♦♦) than sections taking place in the present (***). 

This fic is already complete, so I’ll post the next parts every other day. ^^ More notes about it are beneath the cut, because I can’t shut up when something is DA-related.
