There is nothing sexier than someone who asks questions. Someone who wants to learn about you; wants to understand you. Someone who has a genuine curiosity for life instead of thinking they have all the answers, or who simply doesn't care to learn them

like I'm sorry but I will keep posting about this until people stop being cunts and shitheads so I think we'll be here a good while. every time I talk about the colonial framing of australia and how colonialism is at work in modern day understandings of this country I only need to count to ten before every european and usamerican in sight starts spouting complete bullshit. why don't you all take a deep breath and examine why the fuck you're so wedded to the idea of australia you have in your head

Trying to do a bit of everything every day during this month of August, except for the days where I'm actually doing Something with Other People and spend the day outside. I do a little of fewer things these days.
"everything" is, for me, in this context:
taking care of my body through movement (working out or soft mobility, yoga);
taking care of my body, hygiene edition (I've been consistently brushing my teeth morning and evening, I'm trying to also do face skin care, showering, and taking proper care of my hair)
reading (I've borrowed 18 books from the uni library and the deadline is mid-September so. I better read everyday.)
Crochet (at the moment, I'm making a wolf plushie for a friend's sibling)
Learning languages (German and Korean) (the minimum is reviewing flashcards on the app. on some days I also study from the grammar book, or for German I do a lesson of Nico's Weg)
Tidying / cleaning (minimum is putting away what I've used during the day and making my bed, but my room's still too far from being organised for me, so I can always do more tidying, figure out new systems)
Studies (17 of the 18 books mentioned previously are for my studies, so when I read them I take notes. and very soon I'll have to go back to my thesis and work on writing it)
For German, I absolutely love Nico's Weg. I don't know of anything similar for any other language, but if I did? I'd be learning all my languages that way. The Deutsche Welle has other stuff as well, but I haven't tried those yet 👀

So anyways with the rapid rise of fascism I feel it’s a good time to point out that it’s perfectly legal to follow unjust orders slowly, badly, or inefficiently

“Go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”

I discarded Le français parlé à Toulouse because this one belongs to me so it can wait until after mid-September. the other three books are part of my library haul, the deadline being mid-September. I have now finished La Sociolinguistique (sociolinguistics) and La Tradition Orale (oral tradition), so I'm moving onto L'argot (slang) ! I really like this collection, I hope I can read lots more next year, both related to linguistics and not at all related to it. Like, physics, chemistry, maths, sociology, idk, anything.
Sick as hell. Staying home while my family is gathering at my great grandma's place. I don't want to be on a screen all day, so I picked a few short books... Let's see how much I can read before my brain gives up!

A side effect of my depression meds is that I am sleepy. The sleepy, in the summer, is not helped by the heat. All that together means it's really hard to make decisions, and I'd rather just sleep / scroll forever. There was One Day where I was really good at staying away from my phone: the day I made a list of things I wanted / had to do, instead of just going "oh I'll do stuff and I'll pick it when time comes".
So my challenge now is to figure out 4-5 things to do for every day (NOT the same vague things everyday. that would be the death of me), with if possible very precise directives. My brain is screaming "ADHD hack" and like, yeah, even without ADHD, the ADHD hacks can be useful.
Today I'm finishing the book on oral tradition (~20 pages), watching Twelfth Night (all trans production), editing final touches and publishing an article for my linguistics association, and answering two things on Tumblr. hopefully.

at some point you have to realize that you actually have to read to understand the nuance of anything. we as a society are obsessed with summarization, likely as a result of the speed demanded by capital. from headlines to social media (twitter being especially egregious with the character limit), people take in fragments of knowledge and run with them, twisting their meaning into a kaleidoscope that dilutes the message into nothing. yes, brevity is good, but sometimes the message, even when communicated with utmost brevity, requires a 300 page book. sorry.

Also to be clear if you put the new Harry Potter show on my dashboard I will be unfollowing and probably blocking you. JK Rowling is responsible for the death and pain of too many trans people to count in my country and I cannot tolerate her new way of trying to gain cultural and financial power in any way shape or form.
