" Meant To Be "
- Chapter Three -
"You had better be fucking joking." Karai said after answering a phone call, walking a few steps away from the turtle she had been talking to before being interrupted. "No, no I'll be there." she said before quickly hanging up and groaning, she turned back to the blue clad turtle. "Need any help?" he offered. "Last time I said yes, it didn't turn out very well now did it?" Karai replied, resting a hand on her hip, a small grin tugging at her lips. She did enjoy the time they spent together when he "joined" the Foot Clan for a short time. It was nice to see him relax and not focus on all the weight laid on his shoulders for once. But this was a risk she would not share with him. "I can handle it." Leo rolled his eyes. "That cockiness is what put you in the hospital Karai." he said crossing his arms. She scared him like nothing else. Karai rolled her eyes dramatically, mocking him with a smirk. "A minor setback." she said. He huffed and shook his head. "You almost died!" he yelled in a whisper, trying not to draw the attention of his brothers. The memory of her close call haunted him, it was too close, too real. If it had ended differently... "But I didn't." Karai retorted, her smirk growing as she leaned closer to him. He stared at her, a stern look in his eyes. Karai stared right back, her golden eyes piercing his stormy blue. A sharp scream drew his attention away for a brief moment, whipping his head around to look at his brothers, Mikey now running for his life with Raphael hot on his trail. Leo sighed as he turned back, preparing to speak only to find her already gone without a trace.
A couple of weeks went by. Boring weeks according to Mikey, a sudden cold front and stormy weather had led to the turtles being cooped up in the lair more than normal.
"Can we be done now?" Mikey groaned as he laid on the dojo floor, Donnie standing above him, bostaff in hand. Leo shook his head with a grin, waving him off. "Go ahead. Enough training for today." He spoke. Donnie reached down and offered his hand to his brother, pulling him up. The two bowed to their brother. Their sensei. It had taken a lot of getting used to, but Leo did a good job in Splinter's absence. Leo smiled and bowed in return before Mikey ran off, suddenly filled with energy again. Donnie walked over to Leo, a thoughtful look on his face. "Leo. I'm concerned about Raph." he said looking towards the doors. "He usually never wants to miss sparring practice. And he hasn't been eating much lately. He's always locked up in his room... But he won't talk to me." he added, worry in his voice. Leo nodded and sighed. "I know. He won't talk to me either." he replied. Leo was deeply worried about his brother, but when trying to talk to him only ended in an argument, he was lost at what to do. Ring ring. Donnie quickly answered his phone. He had been waiting. "Hey April." he said, instantly smiling from "ear to ear". Leo smiled as he walked out of the dojo, he paused and looked around the lair before walking over to Mikey who was laying on the couch watching TV. "Hey, I'm going for a walk. I'll be back soon." he said as he walked past him. Mikey mumbled a response as he shoved his mouth full of popcorn. Leo rolled his eyes as he took off out of the lair.
The wind was cold against his pebbled skin. But it was refreshing. As he wandered the roof tops, his mind wandered. He pulled his phone out and scrolled through it, a small frown formed on his lips. It had been a few weeks since he'd seen her. Since she'd disappeared on him again. He had gone to her place a few days after she'd left. He wanted to check on her, make sure she was okay. He'd talked to Shini, and she said that Karai was dealing with a few things but that she was fine. He wanted to text her but didn't want to bother her, he knew she was busy. She would reach out when she had time. He missed her, her laugh, that troublemaking smirk, her eyes. Oh, her eyes... golden like honey, warm, inviting. Many times, he has found himself getting lost deep in those damn eyes. He sighed and shoved his phone back into its holder. "Get ahold of yourself Leo." he told himself as he rubbed his forehead.
You can't be doing this. It's wrong. It's stupid. Ridiculous. Pathetic...
She would never... Leo sighed as he leaned back against the leg of the billboard he was standing under. Why do you continue to do this to yourself Leonardo? What would Splinter say if he ever found out how you felt towards his daughter? More importantly, what would she say... The thought of that scared him. Hurt him. He wanted so badly to express his feelings to her openly, but he did not want to face the inevitable pain of her denial. He signed, his heart stung, and it was tired of fighting. No matter how many times he lied to his brothers and himself, he loved her.
His soul loved her.
And that was something he couldn't change no matter how hard he tried.
Later that evening, Leo returned to the lair. Mikey was still sitting by the TV, and by the looks of it, a Harry Potter marathon was going to keep him there for a long time. Making his way to the kitchen, the sweat smell of freshly brewed tea filled the air. It was a very welcome scent, but also one that brought confusion. Donnie drank coffee, and Mikey isn't a big fan of tea either. It was at that moment that he also noticed the blue mug sitting beside the tea pot. The mug with an "L" on the front. His mug. "What the?" he whispered to himself as he picked it up and examined it, a red smudge on the rim.
"That would be mine." a feminine voice said from behind him as the mug was slipped up out his hand. Jumping up to sit on the counter, Karai smirked before taking a sip. Leo stared at her, processing what had just happened. "Well, hello to you too." he said,"Care to take anything else of mine?" he asked, motioning to the mug in her hand. Karai leaned back a bit, resting a hand on the counter behind her. She laughed, a playful grin on her lips. "Oh, like you really care."
He didn't. After all, she already had something much more valuable of his.
He cracked a smile and shook his head as he opened the cabinet and grabbed a spare mug to use. He couldn't help but glance over to take in her outfit. Her usual uniform had been replaced by black ripped jeans and a slightly oversized Kiss sweatshirt. Oh, he'd like to. Heat crept onto his cheeks as he brought himself out of those thoughts and focused back on pouring a cup of tea for himself. "So, what brings you here?" he asked, breaking the silence before taking a sip of his tea. Karai sighed and leaned her head back, closing her eyes. "I needed to get out of that place." she answered. Leo had to admit, he wasn't expecting such an honest answer. "Bad day?" he asked gently. Karai let out another sigh, a small smile playing at the corners of her lips. "It was." Leo smiled as he looked down at his tea. "Same here." he said quietly, hesitantly reaching over to set his hand beside hers, brushing a large finger against her hand. Karai took a deep breath, laying her hand on top of his.
This was going to hurt.
Leo's smile widened as he blushed. It was moments like this that made him think that maybe he did have a chance. But that was crazy, right? He looked up from his tea to gaze at her. She was so beautiful... Feeling his eyes on her, Karai turned her head to look at him. And shockingly, he didn't look away. Karai's eyes met his for a moment before they briefly wandered down to his lips, quickly glancing back up to meet his gaze again. For a moment, she honestly thought about it. It was insanely tempting. He was tempting. Karai broke the eye contact, for once she was trying to restrain herself. She looked down at her tea, secretly wishing it was something stronger. Just then, Mikey walked into the kitchen, Leo quickly pulling his hand away from Karai's as his cheeks turned a deeper shade of red. "Oh hey Leo. I didn't know you got back." he said, digging through the cabinet in search of a snack. "I just got back." Leo said, seeing Karai grin out of the corner of his eye as he drank some of his tea. "I was thinking, everything seemed to be normal up there. Let's just skill patrol tonight." he said with a shrug. Mikey nodded. "Sounds good to me. Do you want any popcorn?" he asked as he grabbed the box. Karai looked down as her phone buzzed. She sighed and slid off the counter. "You gotta go?" Leo asked, hoping she'd say no. She smiled. "Don't worry, I'll be back." she said as she walked past him, "accidentally" brushing shoulders with him. Leo watched as she walked away. He sighed. He was in deep trouble...

" MEANT TO BE "
- Chapter Two -
"What are you doing tonight?"
Leo tilted his head a little in confusion as he stared at his phone. Why was she asking? Did she need something? Did she wanna hang out with him? The last thought made him blush lightly; he was getting distracted.
"Just out for a walk. Why?"
He waited impatiently for her response, so many different scenarios running through his head now. He shook his head. "What am I doing? All she did was ask me a question. Calm down." he thought to himself. Ahead of him, his brothers had noticed Leo's sudden lack of attention on the task at hand. "He's probably texting his girlfriend." Mikey said with a laugh, nudging Raph with his arm. Raph rolled his eyes and shook his head; he still was not in a joking mood. "Do you guys..." Donnie started to speak but then paused, taking a second to carefully think over his words. He shook his head and looked back down at his tablet. "Never mind, and we're almost there." He said typing a few things. Mikey frowned, disappointed that no one was laughing with him. Meanwhile, Leo had gotten another text from her.
"I'm out and thought I'd stop over and see Splinter."
Leo's disappointment was immeasurable, he missed getting to see her. He was happy that she was going to see her father, but still he couldn't help but frown slightly as he put his phone away, he didn't know what to say back so for now he was just going to leave it. He shook his head and caught up with his brothers just as they reached their destination. A junk yard. Glamorous. Donnie quickly abandoned the others and made his way down and into the electronics part of the dump, Mikey quickly following behind him. Raph and Leo quietly followed them, not speaking a single word to each other as they walked. "Dude look at this!" Mikey excitedly said as he held up a crate of old movies and random other bibs and bobs. Raph sat down on a stack of crates and leaned back against the shipping container they were stacked beside. His eyes briefly looking up to the stars that were beginning to peak through before getting on his phone. Leo looked around, not really seeing anything right off the bat that was intriguing enough to go look through all the junk. "I'm going to walk around guys." he said although no one was really listening to him. As Leo walked along, he let his mind wander, he still couldn't figure out what was wrong with Raph. And it was really bothering him, it wasn't often that Raph would appear sad. Usually when he is sad, he'll just get angry, but this was different. He let out a sigh, he could really use Splinter's advice right now.
Lost in thought, Leo didn't notice the figure that was above him. Within seconds he was on the ground, a foot placed on the back of his shell. He was about to fight back when he realized that there was little to no pressure being put on his back, it was there more to rub it in, or at least it would it seem. Then it came, that familiar laugh. "Hello Karai." Leo said, not needing to look to confirm his guess. He knew. "Hey blue boy." Karai replied, a smirk on her lips as she took her foot off his back. Leo got up and dusted his arms and chest off. "Nice of you to drop in, as always." he began as he met her gaze, something that did indeed intimidate him. "But what are you doing here? I thought you went to see Splinter?" he asked, not that he wasn't happy to see her, just confused. "I did, I just didn't stay long. I had to run an arrand and then I happened to see you." Karai said, placing a hand on her hip as she looked around. "...in a junkyard of all places. Damn, you really know how to have a good night." She said looking back to the turtle before her. What she wouldn't admit was that she just so happened to have memorized their patrol route for the most part, and she had to stop and harass him at least a little while she was close. Leo crossed his arms as a grin crept onto his face. "Ha ha, very funny." he began "You know you can just say you missed me." he flirted, suddenly feeling a bit bold. Karai huffed and rolled her eyes, a smile tugging at her lips. He was adorable. "So, what are you doing in a junkyard exactly?" she asked as she walked past him. Leo followed suit, quickly catching up to her and matching her pace. "Well, Donnie heard from somewhere that they had a bunch of electronics from a closed down store just come in. He was dying to come check it out." he explained. "Oh. I see how it is." Karai said as she stopped. "But when I asked you to steal with me you said no. You've been holding out on me Leonardo." she added crossing her arms as she looked at him, pretending to pout. Leo sighed and turned to her, looking at him like that, he'd let her get away with almost anything. "That was a long time ago." he replied thinking back on the memory, it seemed like only yesterday when they were still teenagers. "But it's not really stealing. We only take what they're gonna throw away." he said defending his honor. Karai raised an eyebrow. "Uh-huh..."
The other three brothers were still rooting through the many items, occasionally finding something interesting. "Hey Raph look at this!" Mikey called out to his brother as he held an old gaming controller over his head. "Come help me find the rest!" he said, trying to get him involved. Raph huffed as he slumped down further. "Most of this stuff is junk, but there is some useful stuff here." Donnie said as he added a few more things to his small pile. He looked around. "Uh... hey guys. Where's Leo?"
"So, uh are you in a rush to get back or..?" Leo trailed off, trying to find his words. A grin once again formed on Karai's lips. "Depends. What are you proposing?" she asked, folding her arms behind her back. "Well, we were gonna get pizza on the way home. You don't have to come if you don't want to. I just wanted to offer incase you'd want to." Leo started to ramble, mentally slapping himself. Karai let out a small laugh as she shook her head. "I think I can make time for that." she answered. Leo smiled wide but tried and failed to hide it. "Come on, they're just over here." he said, leading her in the direction of his brothers.
"There you are, we were just looking for you...Hey Karai!" Mikey said with a smile, it may take some time, but he was determined to build a bond with his adopted sister. After all, he always wanted one. On the other hand, Raph wasn't happy to see her. He never really was. Raph couldn't fully trust her, after everything she'd done, all the lies and tricks. As for Donnie, he wasn't sure. Like two of his brothers, he had forgiven Karai for what had happened in the past, but there was still something there. He had never really spoken much with her, never had anything to connect over. "Hey." Karai greeted back simply, smiling a little at the turtle's joy upon seeing her. Donnie nodded to her with a polite smile before turning to Leo. "I looked through everything, I'm ready to go." he said. "Plus, we should head back to check on Splinter." he added, looking down at his tablet. Donnie had connected it to the machines Splinter was hooked up to, so he could always monitor him even if they weren't there. "Karai do you wanna come? We're getting pizza on the way home." Mikey said as he shoved his finds into a crate he found. "We can't keep April waiting all night. She has to go to work early in the morning." Donnie said as he also packed up what he found into a bag he'd brought along. "It only takes one person to go get pizza." Mikey replied quickly. "You'll eat it all. Besides, no one carrying your junk home" Raph said, breaking his silence. "I'll go get it." Karai said, slightly taken back by her own offer. Mikey's eyes were beaming as he looked at her. "You mean it?" he asked hopefully. Karai laughed. "Sure." she said with a shrug. Leo looked over at her, surprised by her sudden offer. "Are you sure? You don't have to." he said. "I don't mind." She replied crossing her arms. "Well thank you, I guess we'll see you back at the lair then." Donnie said with a small smile as he started to walk off in the direction of home. Mikey smiled happily as he followed suit. Raph looked over towards Leo. "You coming with us?" he asked. "Yea I'm comin." Leo answered before glancing over at Karai. "See you soon." he said with a smile before disappearing with his brothers. Karai let a small smile form on her lips as she left, heading for the nearest pizza place.
As the turtles made their way back into the lair they were quickly greeted by April. "There you guys are!" she said getting up from her seat at the table. "Sorry April... it took longer than we expected." Donnie said as he set his things down on the table. "It's okay, don't worry." She said grabbing her things. "Splinter is doing fine, no changes." she said sadly as she looked at the turtles. A silence fell over the room, everyone slowly looking down at the floor. "Thank you for coming over, April. We really appreciate it." Leo said breaking the silence. She showed a small smile as she slung her bag over her shoulder. "Well, I'd better get going. I have to get up early again." she said. "How is work going?" Donnie asked as he walked her to the exit. "It's going good I guess; I haven't gotten to do too much yet." she said with a shrug and a sigh. "My boss keeps saying things will pick up for me soon, but I don't know... Just have to wait and see." she added looking at the purple clad turtle in front of her. Donnie nodded as he listened to her. "I hope it works out for you; I know you were really looking forward to working there." he said. Donnie paused for a moment before smiling as he placed a hand on her shoulder lightly. "I'm sure your chance is coming. And I know you'll do great." he said genuinely. April smiled back; he gave good pep talks. "Thanks Donnie. That means a lot." she said before checking her phone. "I really need to get going. I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay?" she added as she took a few steps backwards. "Okay. Goodnight." Donnie said, still smiling, he couldn't help it when he was with her. "Goodnight Donnie." April said as she turned around and walked away, soon disappearing down the dark tunnel.
Meanwhile, Leo was busy tidying up the place. Putting the dishes away, folding the blankets in the lounge area, sweeping, etc. He wanted the place to be clean. With the inhabitants being four boys that was easier said than done, and with Splinter still in a coma he wasn't there to make sure everyone cleaned up after themselves. Donnie was mostly clean and organized but he would still leave parts laying around here and there, Raph would leave his workout gear out all the time and hated doing the dishes, and Mikey overall just never tidy with anything. Comics, dishes, half eaten bags of chips that he forgot about... you get the idea. Leo had his moments of being messy, but especially as he got older, he liked things to be neatly in their place. Plus, with a certain someone coming over he wanted to make sure the place looked presentable. Even if she had seen it earlier in its messy state. "You wanna clean my room next?" Mikey asked as he watched Leo finishing up the dishes and putting them away. Leo rolled his eyes and shook his head. "I'm scared of what I'd find in there." he said putting the towel back in its place. "Hey... It's not that bad anymore." Mikey said before taking a sip of his soda. It was still that bad. Raph came out of the dojo and joined his two brothers, Chompy riding on his shoulder. "Hey Raph." Mikey said with a smile, but he only got a nod in response. Donnie soon joined them, once again typing on his tablet. "Here Don." Leo said setting a fresh cup of hot coffee in front of his brother. Donnie smiled and took the cup. "Thanks Leo." he said before starting to do work on his tablet again.
A couple of minutes later and Karai was walking into the lair, carrying a box of pizza in her arms. "There you are. I was just about to starve." Mikey said as he quickly grabbed the plates out from the cabinet. The others rolled their eyes. "Thanks again Karai, really." Leo said as he smiled at her. Karai set the box down on the table and it was quickly opened. "Yea thanks!" Mikey said before chowing down on a slice. Leo leaned back against the counter, crossing his arms. "Aren't you gonna eat anything?" Karai asked as she moved over to stand beside him, also crossing her arms. "Mikey can have mine. I'm not really hungry." Leo answered looking over at her. "What about you?" he asked. "Me neither." she answered, letting out a quiet sigh as her eyes drifted towards the dojo doors for a brief moment before looking away. Leo knew what was on her mind, it was the same thing that was constantly in the back of his. He nudged her arm gently, an understanding smile on his face. "Hey, you okay?" he asked quietly. "Yea I'm fine." she said just before her phone rang. She looked down and answered it, walking away from the group.
"Oh you better be joking."

" Meant To Be "
The City was getting colder, the leaves were slowly changing to rusty oranges and golden yellows, and pumpkin spice everything was back and thriving. Autumn had fallen over New York.
The turtle boys had just finished another evening patrol, the sun slowly setting and taking the little heat with it. Mikey hugged himself as he looked to his brothers, the breeze picking up a little. "Okay we're finally done, can we go now?" he practically begged. Leo looked to him with a slightly annoyed but still fond expression on his face. The orange clad turtle had been wanting to skip out on patrol all day, complaining of a "bad headache" and "definitely real" cough. But his brothers had a feeling it was more that he just wanted to stay home to watch the new season of his favorite show. Before Leo could give an answer, Donnie interrupted. "While it's still light out, it might be a good idea to go check out that place I was telling you guys about earlier." he said checking on his tablet. "It really isn't far, and we really should go as soon as possible." he added looking to the leader. "It's just a bunch old TVs and junk. We have that at home! So we should just go home!" Mikey chimed in with a large grin across his face.
Donnie looked over at his brother clearly unamused. "Well Leo?" he asked, still waiting for an answer. "we'll go." Leo stated crossing his arms over his chest. Mikey groaned. "Do we have toooooo?" he whined looking at his big brother, attempting the ole "puppy eyes" trick. "Don't try it, Mike. If you wanna go home. Go home." Leo said simply, his eyes moving over towards their other brother who was being unusually silent. Mikey's eyes lit up as he clasped his hands together. "Really?" he asked grinning from "ear to ear". Leo smiled and rolled his eyes. "Yes, really. I don't think you'd have fun anyway." he began, Mikey nodding his head in agreement. "All the old TVs, old videogames, and stuff. You'd be so bored." Leo said shrugging his shoulders. Donnie grinned; he knew what was happening. "Hey, do you guys wanna get pizza on the way back?" he asked, walking off as he followed the directions on his tablet, leo and raph following behind him. Mikey's face instantly dropped. "Videogames...pizza...without me?" he whispered quietly to himself. "Hey guys wait up!" he called out running after them, now having no intentions of heading home. "I thought you were going home?" Leo said with a chuckle. "Yea, and I thought you were sick." Donnie added.
Mikey and Donnie talked as they went along their way, but Leo's focus was brought back to Raph, traveling at the back of the pack, he hadn't spoken a word throughout the entire patrol. "Hey, you feeling alright Raph?" Leo asked as he slowed down to match his brother's pace. "I'm fine." Raph answered simply, keeping his eyes focused ahead of him. Leo wasn't buying it. "You're not fine. You haven't said anything all night. You haven't even made fun of me or questioned my decisions once." he said. Leo knew something was wrong, but he also knew getting Raph to talk about his problems was like trying to convince a rock to move. Raph rolled his eyes, picking up his pace. "Just leave me alone okay!?" he said getting annoyed. As much as he wanted to be able to help his brother, Leo knew he was clearly striking a nerve, so for now he would leave it be. As they walked, Leo stayed a few steps behind, lost in thought until his phone buzzed. He quickly pulled it out, his brothers were with him so logically there were only a few people who would possibly text him. But he was hoping for someone in particular. And this time he was right. Karai. Seeing her name pop up on his phone always made him smile, but the excitement is usually mixed with a bit of concern. Worrying that something may be wrong, and she need help. Seeing as how often she finds herself getting mixed into trouble it is never really a surprise. But this time it was just a simple question.
"What are you doing tonight?"
Story Continued on my Wattpad. However I might start posting the full thing on here if it gets enough traction. Hope you enjoy!
