All the people celebrating and romanticizing Sevika's seat in the Council as giving her the voice to speak truth to power likely lived a very privileged life.

Good for them, I guess, but as someone who often was the only Black person in a room full of white people in political/activist contexts, I know the toll access and presence in these spaces take.

It is humiliation after humiliation, insult after insult, microaggression over microaggression, good intentions oozing with paternalism.

You are punished in various ways if you dare to speak truth to power as the only marginalized person in a room full of people whose position and privileges hinge on you being and staying beneath them. It is not an empowering position - it’s isolating, dehumanizing, and exhausting. You are a challenge every time you assert your intelligence or voice.

Your perspective isn't valued because it is a threat. So, it gets belittled, ignored, corrected. Your contributions are rendered invisible, your labor taken for granted and everyone expects you to be grateful that you are even allowed at the table. Because they gave it to you; they can take it if they aren't happy with your performance.

This is Sevika's reality in the Council. Deal with it.
