A few years ago I would have felt too nervous and awkward to walk into a hip coffee shop alone and not take my coffee to go. That's one reason why I love cortadas - little espresso shots topped with foamed milk. They're too small to get in a to-go cup and it really would defeat the purpose as it would cool off rapidly in a cardboard cup. I love the tiny glass it comes in - this time even with a few animal crackers on the side! There are a few other people in here working and whatnot, one other hipster by himself on his phone like I am, but I'm so happy to see everyone getting their coffee "for here": iced coffee in a glass, brewed in a mug.... yay for earth! I almost went outside to sit alone but I decided to just stay in the midst of everything and sit in my awkwardness, if it comes. And it's not really coming... I finally feel like I'm allowed to be here, like theres room for me too. There aren't many comfy spots to sit and hang out here but I got to check something new off my list for the day. Here's to keeping the stride going! Maybe next time I'll keep my ear buds out and say hi to someone, for no reason other than to be friendly and open.

how to music in 2018

Thanks to Austin Kleon for this link to Frank Chimero’s blog entry on how he streams his music: “The benefits of streaming services are obvious to a musical glutton like me, but, unfortunately, the costs are just as great. Streaming does worrying things to the financial lives of musicians and the cultural value placed on music by listeners. The atomization of music makes it more disposable, and even if one does care to pay attention to what they are hearing, the glut of music available can stun even the most mindful listener into submission. A music fan needs a system to manage the abundance and glue back together their listening experience. My hope is that a more robust and intentional listening experience can lead to more robust and intentional financial support for musicians outside of the streaming services.”  I’ve had these exact thoughts! I want to be more intentional with my music discovery because I’ve grown bored with being fed what to listen to by an algorithm (though I have found some gems that way that I still love). I’ve started using Bandcamp more, and now I’m feeling nostalgic for the Last.fm days (p.s. Dillon and I used to flirt message each other on Last.fm when we were just friends. So spesh). Also, I love this tidbit on what I see as the beauty of monthly playlists: “Do you know what song you were dusting to three years ago? I do!” YES. Remembering by music is a v special thing in life. And now, here is my last monthly playlist before I start up a new system of collecting. I look forward to sharing how that goes!
