“Feel free,” he laughed, “a few more drinks and I don’t get so embarrassed easily.” As a star football player back in the day and his father being a professional football player, Johnny had his fair share of the spotlight. However, karaoke at the local bar in town was a lot different type of spotlight. Most people didn’t seem to judge, they at all least clapped at the end, even if someone was not that good. “I can see to that,” he offered, nodding his head. “We can watch from afar and I will pretend I’ve never seen you if they come looking for you,” Johnny told her with a teasing tone. “Just a beer, whatever on draft is fine,” he told the woman, “Pleasure to meet you, Lauren, I’m Johnny.”
Tumblr media
x
“I’ll keep that in mind,” the brunette said chuckling lightly. “If I have enough I just might get up there with you.” she warned. Maybe it would be easier to do with a stranger than the people she worked with, even if both would probably result in them teasing her the next day. “I’ve been told I’m not a terrible singer, but I mostly only do it in my car, where no one can judge me.” she said. She wasn’t a shy person, but that was one thing she lacked the confidence to do. She nodded at his suggestion. “Not a bad a idea. Though they might be too smashed to even recognize me at this point. At least I hope so.” She told bartender their order and stepped back to wait. “You as well,” she smiled when he told her his name. “So, have you always lived in Fallbrook?” she asked. She always got asked where she was from because of her accent, but for her it was harder to tell the difference between locals and people who were new to town.

Rhys pulled his shoulders into a small shrug, “What can I say? I am full of surprises!” He chuckled back at her. “And I am proud to say my  taste buds have grown since my obsession with French toast.” He added, it having been one of the only things he had eaten for a while when the were kids. “That might be, but you haven’t had these tacos before I assume, and let me tell you they are some of the best I have ever had. That is also coming from someone who has been to a lot of places in the last few years, so it says a lot.” He elaborated further. “My point exactly, and don’t even like fish that much. What do you say? Shall we order a selection and just try them all?” He suggested further, figuring it would be a good way for them to explore the menu.
Tumblr media
x
Lauren laughed a little. “Well there’s nothing wrong with French toast at all. I just can’t seem to make it nearly as good as Gran.” she admitted. She did often miss foods that reminded her of home, having lived in America for only a few short years, compared to her cousin. “No, I haven’t had them. And I’ll take your word for it. I’ll trust your palate, even if there isn’t much you won’t try.” she looked over her menu before smirking at the man. “And I happen to like fish. You must not be a true Brit.” she teased the man, as ‘fish and chips’ was the most well known meal from the homeland of their parents. She nodded. “Yeah, let’s try them all.” she agreed and set the menu down. “So, what have you been up to, cousin? Busy with work?” she said, knowing his schedule could some times be as chaotic as hers was.

Cordelia loved interacting with all patrons of her bar, be it that they were townies who’d been there since she could remember, or brand new faces. Lauren was a sweet woman and while Cordelia hadn’t grown particularly close to her, she liked her. Then again, Cordelia rather liked everyone. She couldn’t help but chuckle, reaching up to play with her ear per usual as she shook her head to the question. “Well, no.. I could see why you maybe found some.. joy out of that..” but she never left things awkward with her employees, smiling over at the bartender she’d been scolding earlier and they genuinely smiled back. Her employees knew that no matter how strict she could be, Cordelia meant the best. “Do you want something to drink? Sparkling water infused with strawberries is also an option.” she suggested in case the young lady wasn’t trying to drink too much.
Tumblr media
x
“It did make my day slightly better.” Lauren admitted, as she smiled. “Though I hope all is well now.” she added, not wanting to come across as rude for laughing. She straighten up when the woman asked if she wanted a drink. “Oh, yes please.” she said listening to her suggestion. “Well, as much as a stiff shot of something just to get through this meeting seems tempting, your idea does sound more refreshing.”  she told her with a nod. “I can always save the drinking for afterwards, depending how well or unwell it goes.”

Lauren wasn’t normally one to lose her patience over an inconvenience as small as this, but today it was running thin. She only had a thirty minute break for lunch, if she was lucky, after all. She rolled her eyes letting out an irritable sigh as it seemed no one was coming to take her order, and all she wanted was a coffee. She turned to the man speaking and listened to his explanation before giving a nod. “Thanks for the heads up.” she exhaled another small sigh. However, she didn’t have enough time to go someplace else at this point. She looked around. “I don’t see a ‘ring for service’ bell, though I doubt it would do any good. Any suggestions on how I might get their attention?” she asked, half-jokingly.

~ Coffee Time with @lauren-claire-green ~
Being back in Fallbrook came with a mix of emotions. For the past two years he had convinced himself to forget about this place and the life that he once had. Now he was back with a new identity and too many memories. As he sat in a local coffee shop he noticed one woman waiting to be served. “You might be waiting for awhile.” Evan called out to her, lifting his warm cup of coffee to his lips for a sip. “The two baristas are a couple of teenagers who are obviously very into each other. They’ve been in the back for the past ten minutes and I don’t think they’re coming out anytime soon.”

Lauren had returned from her week long business trip in West Virginia, and had finally convinced her cousin to meet up to catch up. They had not spend much time together since the holidays. “I’m surprised you chose a taco joint, of all places, Rhys.” she mused, taking a sip from her drink. “Every time we go out to eat, you always try to make me try something American that I’ve probably never had, but I’ve definitely had tacos before.” she teased him. “In fact, I’ve heard the fish tacos here are fantastic.” she said pointing to the menu.

She blushed a little bit as the conversation of Christian continued. “His name is Christian. He’s a doctor. But I can’t exactly do anything. I mean… Julien…” She trailed off. She knew it was silly. It’s been four years now since Julien had passed and she should allow herself to move on, but she worried it’d make his memory disappear. Or that he’d be made at her for doing so. It was silly, part of her knew that, but she still worried. “Really? You should’ve done it. Why didn’t you actually flirt?” She asked her friend. “Yeah. That’s definitely worse. You win.” She grinned over at her. “I’m assuming cases haven’t been that great then?”

Lauren listened to her talk about her crush, but felt a sense of sympathy for her when she brought up Julien. “Aw, I know, love. I don’t mean to rush you into anything at all. I know these things take time. But also, you could always give it a go. Or start small with a new friendship.” she suggested. She let out a laugh shook her head. “God, I was far too embarrassed. It seems to be what happens whenever I try to flirt. I make a fool of myself and just hope I don’t ever see that person again. Maybe really have been out of the game for far too long.” She finished her drink, giving a sigh. “They’ve just been strenuous. The one I’m working on now has been dragging on for months.” She glanced up when a server took their empty bowls and left the bill. “I’ll get it, darling.” She said, picking it up before her friend could. “I said it was my treat, after all.” She stood slowly, gathering her purse and belongings. “We’ll have to have a girls night soon, Dom. Find a babysitter and have a night on the town. We could get our flirt on, or just dance and have fun. Something tells me both of us could use some of that in our lives.” she joked, grinning at the other before she paid the bill.

Lauren had a meeting with a new client at the cocktail bar. Never a good sign, if their first instinct was to meet somewhere that served alcohol. It made it harder to tell if they were going to be honest and give her factual details. Still, she wanted to give them the benefit of doubt and make sure she wasn’t wasting her time. She couldn’t afford another loss, after all. She heard the heated discussion happening when she approached the bar, and couldn't help but wonder what was going on. She smirked at the woman who finally noticed her. “No need to worry. I’ve been there,” she admitted. “Although, is it wrong that I found the whole thing mildly entertaining?” she asked. “I haven’t started work yet, so any drama that isn’t mine is a welcomed distraction. “

Cordelia had just finished somewhat of a quiet shouting match with the current manager on duty because he messed up counting the register during opening and nearly caused her to yell at the overnight manager when she spotted a patron who was clearly waiting for a drink, causing a nervous laughter to pull from her gut. “Oh.. my goodness, sweetie! How long have you been waiting? I hope not too long.” She immediately went over and grabbed a menu for them, setting it down in front of them and sighing gently. “So sorry if you heard any of that, I didn’t get my daily dose of espresso shots.” the joke rolled off of her tongue so naturally because despite being a business owner, she had a very good heart. There were times she had to scold employees, but she was always right there on the floor working right beside them and showing them how it was done. With that being said, she wanted all customers to have the most pleasant experience possible when visiting her bar.

Johnny couldn’t help but laugh at the woman’s words, “That’s true and it’s a lot easier for me to get up there once I’ve had enough to drink.” Perhaps that’s what made people had to drink more as well, that drunk people were getting up there and singing while they were drunk. It wasn’t all that flattering but he needed the liquid courage. “That would be a sight to see, honestly, I’d be afraid to get up there after that,” he admitted, shaking his head with a laugh. “Well, I’m not going to say no to that. Nothin’ wrong with getting work to treat people here and there, right? As long as you get one for yourself too.”
Tumblr media
x
“Well, remind me to stick around, so that if that does happen I’ll be here to see it.” she said teasingly. It was easier to watch someone she knew singing -even if she had just met them- than a stranger, without judging them. She stepped towards the bar to get in the line when the man agreed to a drink. “Of course.” she said. “I wouldn’t let you drink alone. And besides, I’m in no hurry to return to my table. I’m sort of hoping they’ll forget about me and go up on stage without me.” she admitted, letting out a laugh. “What would you like? And I’m Lauren, by the way.” she offered, suddenly remembering her manners.

“I’m sure it’ll happen for you, if that’s what you want. And now you have an in with someone in the office in Williamsburg, right?” Though he was in no position to assume that the woman was close with the co-worker that was leaving. “The live entertainment is always,” he paused with a slow smile touching his lips, “entertaining to say the least.” Johnny did enjoy watching the others perform, even the not so good ones. It took courage to get up on the stage and Johnny often looked to alcohol for the confidence to get up in front of others and perform. “No celebrating here,” he shook his head. “I am just here to enjoy the festivities of the evening.” He admitted to the other woman. “It’s definitely no American Idol, but it’s a supportive community none the less.”

She nodded. “Yes, that’s what I’m hoping.” she agreed. She did think about leaving Fallbrook for a bigger city in the next few years, but it did feel fitting for her life right now. She laughed at little at his comment. “Trust me, the more you have to drink, the easier it is to sit through.” she advised. “Though, we could probably use Simon Cowell’s brutal honesty for some of these folks.” she joked and stepped out of the way of someone else who was on their way to the bar. “Well, can I buy you drink, as an apology? I mean, I know that neither of us are really at fault here. But my work is paying for it, so why not? I’ll just pretend it’s for myself.” she offered.

She took a deep breath at the question and shook her head. “No. I mean, there’s someone I like, but… No.” She wasn’t even sure if that’s what was happening towards Christian, but she had forced herself to not think about it. The last thing she wanted to do was get her hopes up and nothing happen. Plus, she wasn’t sure if any of that was in the cards for her. She already lost the man she loved, did she really need another? Or go through another loss? “What about you?” She asked to get the conversation off her. “I really don’t know. My life is filled with kids running around a screaming. I’m not very interesting.”

Lauren’s face lit up, “There is? Oooh. Tell me about him, what’s his name?” she straightened up, suddenly feeling like a school girl again, teasing a friend about a secret crush. She picked at her food and shrugged. “Ah, there’s nothing to talk about, sadly. I think I accidentally flirted with a man in a sandwich shop, the other day. But it was more of a poor choice of words.” she let out a soft laugh remembering the slightly embarrassing encounter. “Honestly, not much different than my life. Except I have to deal with adults who behave like children. Such as other lawyers.” she sighed, her mind wandering back to he last trial and how she had left feeling angry and attacked by her rivaling attorney.

Chloe didn’t falter as she gave one decisive nod, “I’m sure, I kinda like you!” she admitted the woman’s personality one that mirrored hers well. It wasn’t often she was meeting new people in her store as of late anyways and she liked the energy. “I’m betting you come back and have a whole shopping spree here next time the mood strikes!” she grinned speaking matter of factly as if that was the business way. “Yea that whole rack there is all new things in the store.” she gestured to her and stood back not wanting to hover. “Oh you’d definitely make a killing every holiday season, and those summer nights where everyone starts hanging up lights for their barbecues!” she chuckled before shaking her head and bring her hand up to her face. “C’mon! I’ll blush! But seriously thank you that means a lot.” Chloe took a lot of pride in the boutique it was something that had come from her hard work and it was a standing testaments of the dreams she’d had as a little girl. “If you ever see one of those ‘I heart Fallbrook’ shirts in here you have free rein to shut the whole store down!” she laughed but wasn’t entirely joking. “Yea, few years now. See anything you like?”
Tumblr media
x
Lauren smirked when the woman complimented her. “That really means a lot. I’ll be sure to come by here more often.” she told her and moved closer to the rack of items that she was referring to. “I mean, it isn’t a bad idea. There aren’t many other light hangers in this town, after all. And I was quite proud of myself when I managed to put up my Santa sleigh and reindeer on my roof all on my own.” she admitted. Lauren had done her best to adorn her home with the holiday spirit even if she had spent it alone. “It’s true though. It really stands out, you know?” she admitted. The woman snicked at her comment. “You know, actually I don’t have one of those. But perhaps I should, being a local and all.”  She moved towards the shoes, forever needing some for work that matched her business suites, but were comfortable to wear. “Well, I could use something like this. Feminine, but practicle.” she said picking up a pair of flats. “It’s funny how men can get away with wearing loafers, or even sneakers in the office.” she rolled her eyes before glancing at the woman. “Are they on sale? If not I’m happy to pay full price.”

“No need to apologize to me,” though he had been one to apologize already. The upsurge of people at the karaoke bar had surprised him for this evening but he still found himself there. Leaving might have been the better option, find some place quieter, where he could enjoy his drink but he would be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy the talent that got up on the stage. “I suppose that could be it,” he nodded his head at the other woman, “Not that people celebrating is a bad thing,” in fact, the thought warmed his heart if people were in fact celebrating, whatever it may be. “Are you out celebrating?”
Tumblr media
x
Lauren relaxed when she saw the man wasn’t upset with her. It was a bar after all, packed full of people. And when alcohol was involved, one could bet that not all of them we’re going to behave appropriately. She smiled softly and nodded. “No, I guess not. If that is the case,” she agreed and shook her head when he asked if she was celebrating. “Not me. My co-worker. She’s leaving our little law firm for, hopefully for bigger better things in Williamsburg. I’m just here to pretend to be happy for her, instead of miserably envious.” she admitted, surprised at herself for speaking so ill of her firm, but some days it did indeed feel that way. “And, also enjoying the live entertainment, no matter how terrible it is. I was just coming over here to avoid having to go up and embarrass myself.” she grinned. “And yourself? Are you celebrating, or just appreciating the talent? Though I must say, this is a far cry from American Idol.”

She let out a laugh. “I’m going for the visuals on that one. Plus the music.” She said before taking a drink of her coffee. “Of course I do. And take it from someone who lost that, I think it may be overrated.” Though losing love to death versus breaking up was a lot different. And she was starting to realize she was falling for someone else, but all of that was besides the point. Her face fell a little as she thought of this before she played with her mug and then snapped out of her thoughts. “You know where to go.” She grinned and thanked the server before starting to pick at her food.

Lauren let out a small sigh. “You may be right about that.” Sometimes she wished she wasn’t single and told herself it was silly to miss the companionship of her ex when he proved to be untrustworthy and irresponsible. Though most days her life was so busy she couldn’t imagine someone else demanding her time and attention. She stirred her soup, letting it cool. “That being said, are there any potential ‘prince charmings’ in your life at the moment?” she smiled. It was her strange way of asking if she had been on any dates lately, sinc eboth knew how shallow the dating pool was in their little town. “There must be something you can give me. The idle gossip around the firm is getting so dull. Cheryl and her husband had a fight over Christmas. Something about her mother-in-law being a drunk. Other than that, nothing worth paying attention to.” she smirked giving a shrug.

Chloe couldn’t help but laugh at her response and she still felt flattered that people even wanted to buy what she made, let alone try to bargain for it. “Well I’ll have to ask the boss…” she trailed tapping a finger against her chin before a quickly shrugging. “I say it’s fine!” she grinned actually thankful for the help she’d gotten. “Honestly it’s fine, it’s definitely something I’d say too!” she waved off the next comment and nodded once. “Was there anything you’d had your eye on?” she asked looking around the store. “Oh for sure, ‘All Rights Reserved, contact Lauren Green for all your light hanging needs!” she chuckled, “I’m Chloe Williams by the way!” she smiled extending a hand in greeting.

Lauren looked at the woman when she mentioned asking the boss, hoping she had not offended her, but smiled when she realized it was her. “Oh. You really mean it? I mean, I’m happy to pay full price.” She said, as she liked to support local businesses where possible. “I’ll have a look around, though. Do you have anything new in?” she asked. She chuckled at her comment. “That’s more like it.” she joked. “Maybe I could start some sort of side hustle, hanging lights. It’s nice to meet you Chloe. I must say, this is one of my favorite places to shop, so I guess that makes me a big fan of yours.” she told her. “It’s not as ridiculously pricey as some of the more tourist-y shops around here. And sometimes there are some good deals. Have you always been the manager?” she asked.

Josh nodded when she explained why she often visited the cafe. “I get it, walks are nice to get some fresh air.” It made perfect sense, because he knew that slow days at work had him begging for more calls just to get out of the station. The fire department received calls mostly for medical aid at car crashes around town when it wasn’t winter and slow days were a good thing, he felt bad for wanting to see more action. She made him laugh with the way she talked about the days she was too busy to head there for coffee. “It can’t be too bad, not if you back something good.” Josh paused, because he wasn’t used to people asking about him. “Do I come here often?” Was that what she asked about? “Yeah. I guess I like the coffee.”
x
Lauren shrugged, contemplating his suggestion. “That’s true. Sometimes leftovers do beat anything you can get in a cafeteria or cafe, if it’s something good. Though the sandwiches here are not half bad.” she looked at the menu board contemplating getting one, as it sounded more appealing than the salad she had packed herself for lunch. She had been trying to eat ‘healthier’ but also couldn’t resist something that tasted good over something bland.  “Unless that sounds like some cheesy pick up line.” She smiled, becoming embarrassed. “I wasn’t hitting on you, I promise. Not intentionally.” she said, laughing at herself a little. “Yeah. The coffee’s great. Do you work around here, then?”

She grinned at her before nodding. “I’m sure we all did that at one point. Alice in Wonderland was my personal favorite. It calmed me down enough to help me sleep at night.” Honestly, the movie still did whenever she needed it too. It was always going to be her comfort movie. “If it helps, I think a lawyer would make a very interesting Disney movie.” She tried assuring her. She listened to how Lauren spent the holiday and smiled softly. While she didn’t celebrate, she was definitely glad to hear that her friend had a good time. “I’m glad. It all definitely sounds like a nice time.” Dominique nodded and grinned at her. “I’ll keep that in mind. You are always more than welcome to come over to mine if there is something you need.”

The brunette nodded with some enthusiasm. “Yes! Another classic. Maybe because it has a strong theme of narcotics, or just all the lovely visuals. Or both, perhaps.” she said in jest before grinning. “You think so? You may be on to something, Dom. And one who doesn’t need a handsome prince, at that, because heaven knows, I wouldn’t know what to do with one if he fell at my feet.” she mused with a sigh. It was true, her dating life had been non-existent, but she also knew how much time and patience being in a relationship took. None of which she had. “I’ll hold you to it, the next time I need a cup of sugar or a hammer and some nails.” she smirked, and looked up as a server finally brought their food.

“Exactly. I haven’t fully decided yet whether to  take the easy way out and get my mom a gift card, or gamble on a book. I mean worse case they can always just exchange it I guess if it isn’t what they want.” He added, knowing the store policies were usually nice around Christmas season. Especially  in town as they were keen to get all the business they could. “Oh yeah?” Mic had not  touched a book since college, and even then he had always been more of  a practical, learning by doing kind of guy. “I might get  it then. If she doesn’t like it  I’ll just blame the random woman I met  at the book store.”

She offered a sympathetic smirk. “Ah, the dreaded gamble. And they’ll always pretend to like it at first, and say ‘Oh. This is.. nice.’” she said, mimicking her father’s common reaction. “And then exchange it behind our backs. I speak from my own experience of course, but it sounds like you’ve been there too. It’s a golden rule to always keep the receipt.” she went and shook her head. “It’s stressful just thinking about it.” she muttered, fidgeting with the book she was holding. She let go a soft laugh and feigned an offended expression. “If you must blame it on me, than at least use my name. Tell her that Lauren said it was a good choice.” she mused. “And, you are?” she asked.
