Final Piece Three

For this piece I used a primary image of myself in order to us the dispersion effect shown in my final piece. For this process I used Photoshop software, however the text I used was  downloaded from DaFont. Firstly I used the cutting tool and removed my face and then sis the dispersion effect on the remaining body of the image using brush tools, amongst other techniques. My poster was designed for a company that helps young children called YoungMinds.org.uk and this company helps teenagers and young children with mental disorders such as schizophrenia and I chose them because my covert and obscure theme was on mental illness but I did special research into the mental disorder of schizophrenia.I chose this poster for my poster campaign because it allowed me to use a lot of text that links back to schizophrenia and the research I had done previously on the subject could be used in it.I chose to use the image of a young person because the YoungMinds organisation works with young people and this poster is meant for young people so using an image of someone young would be more effective because of the audience. For this piece of work I used a dull whitish grey background and  black text with a dull palette in general with some hints of colour .I used a folded paper effect and to get these effects I used brushes. I chose these effects because they have a worn out look.

I chose this text because it is bold and stands out, it also reflects the theme and dispersion effect I used on the person, I also chose to keep the text in black because goes with the colours I used in the type and using other colours might clash with the other colours used in the poster especially since it has a bitmap pattern and the bright blue used in the background.  I chose to keep add a text headline because I wanted to add a message to my piece of work but not too much writing because it might overcrowd the piece, the amount of text used was sufficient to send the message.To improve my work I could add more dispersion or more destroyed effect to the background instead of just folds. My final piece would work in a commercial context because it has the name of the company as well as their website. the date is unneeded as the website is there constantly and there is no limit for when help can be provided, and to give it a more professional look I added the logo of the company and a commercial tag line.

Final Piece Two

For this piece I used photography and a black background to create the piece above, I used the cutting and quick selection tools to come up with this effect. 

For this piece I based the design more on a simple poster with a basic message, rather than something with a lot going on because I had used that technique previously and wanted to try an interesting alternative.I had originally wanted to use a range of images however I felt it more effective with only one image. The artist that I had researched previously included Nicholas Max and Patrick Thomas and these are the artists inspired e.g Nicholas Max and his photography as well as Patrick Thomas and his use of message and meaning behind the work to come up with the finished piece shown above.The aim and theme of this piece was to make people aware of how serious mental health problems are, as well as show young people with mental health there is a place they can go to get help. The audience for this poster is everyone but mainly focuses on young people because it is aimed for an organization is young people. I chose to use an image of a young person and changed the texture of the picture to a grainy and dull effect because it is meant to symbolize how people with mental illnesses might see the world The text I used was uncomplicated and bold text compared to the background because I wanted the text and the message to be pronounced.

The commercial aspect of my work is the placement of the logo of the mental health organisation, and information about where they can get help.

Final Piece One:

For this piece I used a primary image taken by myself in order to convert the face into the typography shown in my final piece. For this process I used Photoshop software, however the text I used in the typography is download from DaFont. Firstly I converted the image to greyscale  I used the layering tool in order to have the two layers of text. The foreground layer which was a large brush and the background layer which was a fill of smaller words. For each colour on the image I used the corresponding colour on the brush and the fill.

For this piece of work I used a bright blue tone and a blue and black palette in general with some hints of grey.I used a painted background and a bitmap circle effect  as well as a folded paper effect and to get these effects I used brushes. I chose these effects because they have a worn out look and are supposed to replicate the mind of a teenager, it has alot of things going on in it but the main focus is on the person.

 I chose this text because it is bold and stands out, it is also very instructional and sends the message clearly, I also chose to keep the text in black because goes with the colours I used in my typography and using another colour might clash with the background especially since it has a bitmap pattern and the bright blue used in the background.

 I chose to keep my text limited because I didn't want to overcrowd my piece of work with too much writing and I felt the amount of text used was sufficient to show my message.To improve my work I could add more characters e.g another boy or group of people ton make the page seem more filled.

My final piece would work in a commercial context because it has the name of the company as well as their website. It does not need a date as the website is there everyday and there is no limit for when you can get help, and to give it a more professional look I added the logo og the company and a commercial slogan.

Second dispersion experiment

For my second attempt at the dispersion experiment I used my own face but this time tested it on a black background I tried this because I was inspired by the Hvass and Hannibal piece that had faces on top of faces, but in his work he used photography in a dark room. However I altered my piece slightly I used one clear face but instead of covering it with another I chose to use the dispersion effect to give my work an added layer of depth as well as a different look.

Dispersion Experiment

This was my first attempt at a dispersion exopirament. I thought I would try this technique because it has an interestion outcome  and I could link it well  with my work on schizophrenia. I also used it because it has similar techniques to those used by Hvass and Hannibal especial with the use of the paint and splatter effect but it also has the distortion techniques used by Nicholas Max which add to its overall aesthetic.

My second experiment with typography. In this experiment I used a primary image of a female however I made other changes,I changed  the colour of the background from the rainbow effect to on e plain colour, and I added text to only the lighter coloured layers like the greys and whites however I kept the black colours the smae in order for you to see the details of the image like the features on the girls face and hair as well as parts of her clothing.

The text I used on this piece of work was bigger in this piece with smaller text on the back layer.I chose to use white and green because they are eye catching and different colours and somehow go together.

Typography design done on Photoshop.My experiment with typography done in created in Photoshop on the topic of schizophrenia. 

I decided to test typography because it is an interesting technique that can be incorporated into any pieces of my work.

For this piece i used a rainbow colour effect on the background image, which is a primary image taken by myself, and a teenage style looking text which is simple and easy to ready (downloaded from Da-Font). I also used statistics on schizophrenia for the text that fills the image.

Cracked Texture Experiment 

For this experiment, I followed the pattern of Nicholas Max and his use of textures. which is why I used the dry , cracked and burned texture. I used this effect by obscuring the face of the person in the primary image and I did this using a cracked effect image and copying the cracked details onto the persons face in my image. This gives my work a slightly disturbing feel, with the distortion of the face, but also links back to the schizophrenia theme and how you dont feel the same and you dont look at yourself in the same way.

I could use this effect in my exam work on the people in my primary images to add another layer of depth to the work. To add the burn effect I got a picture of something old and dry and I copied its details onto his face and changed the opacity of the dry/rusty effect in order to make it blend with the rest of the image. I used the same technique for both the dark patches on his face.

Experiment 2

For this piece I was experimenting with brushes and other dot/painting tools in order to get a distortion effect or to hide someone face. I was experimenting with this technique as it links back to my covert and obscure theme and it is a simple way to show my idea. I chose to experiment with this idea because it is one which is easy to adjust or incorporate into my own work either as a part of one piece or use in a similar way but on something else e.g an object.

 Experiment One This is my first experiment for my final piece. I experiment using the Bitmap effect on Photoshop.  I used a primary image of myself sitting, to accustom myself with this style and grow a better understanding of his style, and how to use it in my work. I thought this technique gave the picture a more interesting look that could be slightly obscured and therefore I could use it, or a variation of it later in my work.

Symptoms Of Schizophrenia

The symptoms of schizophrenia are usually classified into one of two categories: positive or negative.

Positive symptoms represent a change in behaviour or thoughts, such as hallucinations or delusions.

Negative symptoms represent a withdrawal or lack of function which you would usually expect to see in a healthy person. For example, people with schizophrenia often appear emotionless, flat and apathetic.

The condition may develop slowly. The first signs of schizophrenia, such as becoming socially withdrawn and unresponsive or experiencing changes in sleeping patterns, can be hard to identify. This is because the first symptoms often develop during adolescence and changes can be mistaken for an adolescent ‘phase’.

People often have episodes of schizophrenia, during which their symptoms are particularly severe, followed by periods where they experience few or no positive symptoms. This is known as acute schizophrenia.

If you are experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia, see your GP as soon as possible. The earlier schizophrenia is treated, the more successful the outcome tends to be.

What is schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a severe form of mental illness affecting about 7 per thousand of the adult population, mostly in the age group 15-35 years. Though the incidence is low (3-10,000), the prevalence is high due to chronicity.

Facts

Schizophrenia affects about 24 million people wordwide.

Schizophrenia is a treatable disorder, treatment being more effective in its initial stages.

More than 50% of persons with schizophrenia are not receiving appropriate care.

90% of people with untreated schizophrenia are in developing countries.

Care of persons with schizophrenia can be provided at community level, with active family and community involvement.

There are effective interventions (pharmacological and psychosocial) available and the earlier the treatment is initiated, the more effective it will be. However, the majority of the persons with chronic schizophrenia do not receive treatment, which contributes to the chronicity.

Pilot programmes in a few developing countries (e.g. India, Iran, Pakistan, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau) have demonstrated the feasibility of providing care to people with severe mental illness through the primary health care systems by:

appropriate training of the primary health care personnel;

provision of essential drugs;

strengthening of the families for home care;

referral support from mental health professionals, and

public education to decrease stigma and discrimination.

My Topic

The topic I have chosen to work on for my covert and obscure theme is a poster campaign on schizophrenia. People who suffer from mental illness e.g people who suffer from schizophrenia have delusions, hallucinations, unusual or disorganized behavior. This links to identity and obscurity because they see the world differently and what they do or how they behave could be seen as unorthodox. Sometimes people with this disorder can also show lack of activity, loss of interest and unresponsiveness and they can often struggle with their identity and living with this disorder can affect your relationships .

The poster campaign will be for Teen Mental Health (http://www.youngminds.org.uk/). Trying to help people with the mental disorders and educate people about mental disorders.

Individuality and Personality

Using galaxy and smoke brushes to make this piece. It links into my covert and obscure theme which is Individuality and Personality. In this piece I hid the persons face in order to add mystery or show that your face has a high significance and without it you would not be able to show things like emotions and therefore by obscuring your face it takes away most of your individuality and Personality.

Texture Experiment 

This is my handmade texture experiment which could be used in my work either as a background image or combined into the work. For this piece I used a range of fabrics and textures. I used light paper as the base and newspaper, netting, bubble wrap, straws and a piece of sack fabric. I also used oil paint and ink to add colour and distort the image. The different pieces were put together using PVA glue.
