Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Publication
My name is Dr. Shuang Tu. I am a professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at JSU. I earned my Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech and joined JSU since 2005.
Yes. We recently submitted a joint paper with my Fermilab collaborators. JSU is a DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) participating institution. Fermilab is one of the key players in this international DUNE project. As a DUNE collaborating article, the paper is being reviewed by DUNE collaborators before it is submitted to the Journal of Instrumentation for publication.
My DOE grant is an outcome of my experience as I participated in the summer Visiting Faculty Program hosted by Fermilab in the summers of 2021 and 2022. In the program, I worked on the simulation of the liquid argon flow field in a neutrino detector using my in-house flow solvers developed over the years by myself. Since the VFP program is short, to continue this work, I wrote a research proposal to the DOE Office of Science with the support from my Fermilab collaborators to seek a longer-term support. And my proposal got funded.
My NSF grant is a joint effort with my Ole Miss long-time collaborator Dr. Byunghyun Jang who has expertise in GPU computing. We worked together to speed up my flow solvers using the GPU accelerators. In this project, we also plan to package some common parallel computing routines/functions using CPU and/or GPU into a software library which will be publicly available to general research community. The educational component includes a High Performance Computing Summer Institute hosted by JSU.
Simulating liquid argon flow field inside a neutrino detector is a brand new application of my flow solvers. I never realized I would have an opportunity to work with particle physics scientists.
My NSF project has an education component which is about hosting a 4-week high performance computing summer institute on JSU campus. This is the first time for JSU to host the Summer Institute of this kind.
My DOE project is the first time for JSU researchers to establish a collaborating relationship with Fermilab researchers in neutrino research.
These projects are still ongoing. In my DOE project, we expect to leverage my current flow solver and make modifications as needed to simulate the liquid argon flow field inside a neutrino detector with accuracy and efficiency and investigate the space charge effect on the electric field, helping other particle physicists to calibrate their experimental measurement. In my NSF project, we have three main tasks. First, we aim to combine JSU’s technology in parallel flow solvers and Ole Miss’ GPU computing to further accelerate the flow simulation. Second, we will package our work into a software library such that other researchers in this field can benefit from our work. Finally, we will also host summer institutes at both JSU and Ole Miss to expose and train recruited participants to the world of computational engineering.
Our work is important. For example, flow field inside a neutrino detector is important since the ions generated by ionization caused by neutrino particles travel at a speed comparable to the flow’s speed. Therefore, the flow velocity may lead to local accumulation of ions, which will distort the electric field of the detector from its designed nominal value. The resulting distortions in the electric field cause drifting electrons to arrive at different places and at different times on the anode plane than they would had there been no distortions. In the past, proprietary commercial software was used to simulate the liquid argon flow field. With our in-house flow solver, we will able to make any modifications as needed to improve the prediction accuracy.
The software library we will package in our NSF project will be available to government and public scientific community for free.  Researcher/developers are expected to save lots of time and efforts by simply calling functions from the library to parallelize their numerical solvers, and instead be able to focus on other intellectual development such as numerical algorithm development and improvement. The summer institutes we will host at both JSU and Ole Miss will expose participants to the many aspects of the world of computational engineering, many of which won’t be covered in regular engineering and computer science curricula.
We would like the researchers in national labs and universities to adopt our highly optimized flow solvers and libraries in their research work.
Many skills including parallel computing and programming and GPU computing are not typical mandatory courses in today’s undergraduate engineering and computer science majors.

Title: New Biopolymers Protect Levee and Promote Plant Growth: A Novel Environmental Solution
(Jackson State University Division of Research Communications)
Introduction:
Rhizosphere microbial polymers exhibit bioactivity and can play dynamic roles in biological processes including metal adsorption, nutrient supply, soil structure formation, and even crop productivity. In this study, we examined the biopolymer interaction with soil particles, radionuclides, and heavy metals. Through a series of experiments and multiple field demonstrations, we discovered that these biopolymers have the capacity to increase particle sizes and enhance adsorption capacity of clay minerals and oxides. The new biopolymers have great potential for military and civilian use in stabilizing the soil and sediment structure to protect levee and promoting plant growth.
Results:
Our findings propose a novel material for promoting soil stabilization and nutrient availability in the critical zone. The biopolymers altered the surface properties of clay minerals and enhanced adsorption capacity for pollutants (heavy metals, radionuclides) as well as nutrient-rich (nitrogen, phosphate) species. Moreover, our field tests demonstrated the effect of biopolymers in stabilizing the loose structure of soils in the levee area.
Impact:
Our study brings positive news for the biotech industry and public, who can benefit from these new biopolymers for environmentally friendly applications. We see potential for small high-tech businesses to new large-scale production processes contributing to stabilizing levees (coastal, lake, and river methods) at cost-effective rates. Additionally, farmers can benefit from the potential to improve crop growth and sustainability through the promotion of soil health in critical soils. Taxpayers may also take note of the potential long-term protection the biopolymers may provide against natural disasters, such as floods or disasters compromising levee banks.
Limitations and Future Studies:
One of the limitations of our study is the need for further research into the long-term stability of biopolymers in soils and sediments. Additionally, understanding the effects of biopolymers on nutrients, such as aluminum toxicity, and the long-term implications is necessary. While our research is ongoing, future studies are necessary to determine their use in agricultural systems, including testing in different settings such as diverse soils and in more practical, long-term field studies.
Conclusion:
Our exploratory studies demonstrate the potential of the newly discovered biopolymers for military, particularly the Army, and civilian applications as well. The new biopolymers not only have environmental implications but also have significant economic potential. The potential benefits for society of these biopolymers include soil stabilization, promotion of plant growth, as well as potential for application in other areas such as adsorbents for environmental remediation or hydrogels in consumer goods. We believe the results demonstrate the significant opportunity for application in broad environmental and consumer markets, that could ultimately lead to major impacts on sustainability

JSU OPIOID SUMMIT
Jackson State University in the Mississippi bureau of Narcotics hosted an opioid Summit in which local community members came to here facts figures complaints and concerns associated with the crisis. Nationally there's been much debate about the contentious Legacy of the War on Drugs and the rights of patients versus the legacy of criminality. With recidivism still rampant in spite of harsh penalties for drug offenders, many critics and since it's reform advocates believe that the opioid epidemic should be met with empathy and care, and that abusers are victims. Nonetheless other proponents of sentence reform, particularly persons of color feel that today's climate is suspiciously less hostile then the environment of the 90s or even the labor subsidizing south of days past.

Deputy director of Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics , Steven Maxwell, feels however, that the issue of opioids and our communities goes beyond color.
Noting the number of deaths per day stemming from opioid abuse has risen past 100 nationwide, director of Mississippi Board of pharmacies, Steven Parker, emphasized that prescription pill abuse is a more insidious issue than people tend to realize. In Mississippi alone, 1 in 10 people misuse prescription drugs and overall prescription drug abuse has surged 400% in the past decade per the MBN. Deputy Director Maxwell, added that; "...there has been an excess of 180 opioid deaths in the State of Mississippi this past year and those individuals are from all communities and all demographics across this state."

Opioids include but are not limited to codeine, hydrocodone, Vicodin oxycodone, hydromorphone and fentanyl and have spread across the nation to point of being labeled a public health crisis. The CDC estimates to the taxpayer this year alone.
Those presenting made sure to emphasize the duty of the community, and attempted to humanize their positions as law enforcement in the various eras. Although most were receptive, there was clearly room for growth, and palpable tension as well. Amongst those in attendance, one woman, had called the addiction hotline mentioned by the presenters, while her brother lay in her arms; All the while they were on an placed hold.
Still her message was one of hope:
"Know your resources just reach out to people talk Talking is the most important thing. Talk about your situation talk to people you know and tell your loved ones, hey what you doing is wrong and you need some help."
For many people their familiarity is only with hard drugs, but in fact there is no significant difference in mortality rates amongst the category.

The organizers of the event also noted the strong turnout and the concerns from faculty and students who were looking to get involved, offering their time and their understanding to help solve an ongoing problem spreading through our nation.
