A Spirit of Reverence Provided by Lama Surya Das with whole credit to John Blofeld
A zen scholar articulates the disparities between your conceptual along with ritual components of practice. This content was brought to our notice by Lama Surya Das who is an American lama within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. He's a poet, chantmaster, spiritual activist in addition to author of numerous popular works on Buddhism; a meditation coach along with representative for Buddhism in the west. Lama Surya Das keeps us up to date about the different facets of Buddhism as well as meditation occasionally with his own discourse and sometimes via articles and also content that sheds light on Buddhism. This piece on Buddhism originates from John Blofeld a scholar, writer, along with translator of Asian philosophy and religion, particularly Buddhism and Taoism. Continue reading to read more information about Buddhism and the distinctions relating to the conceptual as well as ritual aspects of practice.
Due to the fact Buddhism arrived in the West, inevitably quite a few people have felt, “Zazen is good, compassion is great, self-discipline is nice, but why all this bowing as well as incense? To whom do you offer incense along with flowers?” For this all of the Buddhists of the past as well as Asian ?Buddhists today will answer with 1 voice: “Dear friends, a spirit of reverence is definitely important to effective practice. Without them, enlightenment can not be gained!”
Prostrations in addition to offerings are admittedly simply forms-just somebody's technique of indicating precisely what cats express by rubbing themselves against a cherished person’s legs. If it had been natural for humans to stand on their heads or stick out their rumps to show respect, then Buddhists would probably stand on their particular heads or maybe stick out their rumps as a matter of course. Forms don't matter by themselves, but the attitude of mind manifested by prostrations and so forth is of stupendous importance to followers of the Way.
My Tibetan lama explained at a very initial phase of my training: “Ignorant people undertake the mindset of subject to king before a Buddha statue. Higher-level practice is conducted wholly within the intellect. But even if you reach the highest possible level-hard without a doubt to succeed in in one lifetime-you must each day alternate formless, wordless, above-conceptual practice with bowing down along with making offerings. Never ever fail in that.” My Chinese Chan (Zen) teacher told me: “In between your rounds of meditation, practice bowing, offering incense, in addition to making circumambulations. If you have no spirit of respect, simply no sense of amazement for all which lies beyond the confines of that miserably circumscribed illusion you suppose to be your ‘me,’ you will earn zero improvement. Why? Simply because when your practice boosts, you'll reflect: ‘I did much better inside my meditation just now’ and by so pondering fall back to the minimum level of ignorance on account of the actual consequent inflation of one's devilish ‘I’!”
Those Zen monks who said, “Meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha” or even endorsed using Buddha figures as firewood and so on had been talking not to Americans or even new Buddhists but to Chinese or maybe Japanese Zen followers that could possibly be counted upon to understand the meaning of these recommendations, that actually amounted to this: “Never for one minute guess that veneration of sutras or perhaps images is of much use in itself, thus don’t let it replace the rest of your practice, as unaware people often do.” I doubt if it at any time entered those monks’ minds that one day there'd be individuals in the world who'd take these kinds of powerful (in addition to funny) injunctions actually!
If it is wrong to have and also to symbolize behavior of reverence, awe, as well as gratitude by prostrations and offerings, then almost all Buddhists happen to be wrong ever since the dharma had been preached in this existing kalpa 2,500 and many more years ago. Can it be possible that those 100s of millions of people at all levels of dedication to the practice we so tremendously value included not one man or woman of true understanding until Buddhism reached America?

Six Steps to Freedom and Intentional Responsiveness

I have found that fear, anger and irritation are like an affliction, and a serious impediment to open communication and healthy relationships of all kinds. Discovering methods to deal with these challenging emotions is essential in leading a healthy well-balanced, harmonious life. It is important to realize that anger has its own function, intelligence and logic and so we should not entirely try…

Look at ourselves
Let’s really look into ourselves, for once, candidly and unstintingly. What are we seeking? What are we missing, if anything? What do we want? Let’s put it very crassly. Not just what do we “aspire to,” but what the hell do we really want? And then try to go for that. Even if it’s just money or a new car or love interest. Because then when we have that, we might still find that we want more. Then…

How to find happiness
Tumblr media
Lama Surya Das, a teacher of Tibetan Buddhism, clarifies how Buddha described life as a string of subjective experiences that we string together with the crazy glue of our concepts and how understanding this can bring us bliss. We all long to feel happy, and each one of us have diverse systems to arrive at happiness. Here are steps you can take to expand your happiness into your life:
A) Be with others who make you smile. Studies prove that we are happiest when we are around those who are additionally satisfied. Connect with those who are delightful and let rub off on you.
B) Hold your qualities. What you discover is genuine, what you know is fair and what you have confidence in are all qualities. After some time, the more you respect them, the better you will feel about yourself and those you adore.
C) Accept the good quality. Take a Look at your life and take supply of what’s working and do not push away something just because it isn’t great.
D) Visualize the superlative. Don’t be scared to look at what you actually want and see you getting it. Numerous people keep away from this practice because they don’t want to be frustrated if things don’t work out. The fact is that visualizing getting what you need is a major part of accomplishing it.
E) Do things you adore. Perhaps you can't skydive each day or take holidays each season, but as long as you get the chance to do the things you love now and then, you will discover more happiness.
F) Discover purpose. Those who trust they are contributing to the well-being of sympathy tend to feel better about their lives. Many people want to be part of something better than they are, simply because it’s satisfying.
G)  Pay attention to your heart. You are the only one who realizes what fills you up. Your family and companions may think you’d be extraordinary at something that truly doesn't make you happy. Simply be smart and keep your normal day job for the time being.
H) Inspire yourself, not others. It’s easy to feel that another person is responsible for your satisfaction, yet the fact is that it is truly your charge. When you understand that, you have the ability to get where you desire to go. Stop faulting others and you’ll get your answers much sooner.
I)  Be interested in change. Even if it doesn’t feel great, change is the one thing you can rely on. Change will happen, so make  plans and emotionally coast yourself up for the experience.
J) Laze around in the effortless happiness. Those who care for you, cherished memories, senseless jokes, warm days and shiny nights—these are the binds that tie and the blessing that keep on giving.
K) Happiness and satisfaction are inside your grip, but sometimes just out of reach. Understanding what work is superlative for you is the primary step in discovering more of them.
My favorite quote from Lama Surya Das - “It almost seems as though this roiling world is conspiring to test our patience at every turn. In fact, it is. With this in mind, we would be wise to look on our imperfect environment as a teacher rather than an antagonist. It constantly shows us that we need to be patient on an ongoing basis, not just every now and then, if we´re going to realize true inner peace, happiness, and fulfillment.”
