chapter 3 of Accretion was nearly finished, but it felt like it didn't have enough leading up to it, so it's chapter 4 now.

it might be the first time i've inserted an entire extra chapter from scratch instead of just splitting off from one that got away from me. it's certainly the first time it's happened when the original chapter was so close to being finished.

i love having like 50 to 75% of the dialogue of a chapter written for months or years shhh and that dialogue a) basically serves as the closest thing i have to an outline, b) needs to be fleshed out with everything that isn't dialogue in order to get anywhere near finishing a chapter, and c) very often isn't actually in the right order, which i don't notice until i get to point b in the process, which might take months or years

sometimes, though, i stumble into being just the right amount of totally and completely exhausted that i write my way out of a sticking point with an entirely new segment of a scene or exchange that there's no way on earth i would've come up with while not half asleep (which i know, because *points* this can take months or years) and i would really, really like to be able to reliably access that part of my brain when i'm not nearly falling asleep on my keyboard
