Do you Lack Confidence?

Traits associated with low self-confidence include:

1. Undervaluing your experience and abilities; writing yourself off as being “no good at anything”

2. Accepting the blame for things when it isn’t your fault

3. Holding back, especially in groups, and dreading sharing your opinion – or anything about yourself or your life; being very shy and reserved

4. Having unrealistic, perfectionist standards for yourself – and at the same time being highly self-critical

5. Obsessing over things that went wrong in the past (especially if was something you said or did)

6. Being preoccupied with the negative outcomes and potential failures (And what people will think of you – as a consequence of that)

7. Being fearful of a wide range of people and situation; dreading going, or doing, something new

8. Doing things to please others – even when it’s thing you really don’t want to do (for fear of disapproval, rejection, or losing face)

BATANG-INA

        “Bago mo husgahan ang mga BATANG-INA...”, I’m sure you’ve heard or stumbled by this viral post in facebook. It even became an icon for a lot of memes - as a joke. But you know what? It’s actually not. As a matter of fact, teenage pregnancy is considered one of the major problems the government is facing today. Its alarming increase of cases over 10 years alone should really be a thing to ponder. Why is this happening? What took these girls into this phase of their lives so early?

        Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in females under the age of 20. This happens when a female engages in sexual intercourse after her first menstruation. Females aged 15-19 have the highest number of cases. Why is this? Based on our status quo, one of the most common reason is peer pressure. Many teenagers indulge in early sexual intercourses because of the need to ‘fit in’ with their group of friends. Teens especially, rely on their friends a lot during these days of their lives making their friends a major influence to him/her. Teenage drinking would be one of the reasons too. 

         Another is the inadequate knowledge about safe sex. Study shows that teenage pregnancy happens mostly in poor families compared to rich families. This is mainly because they lack education. A lot of poor families don’t have the luxury to take their kids to school with all the problems they are already facing. And because of this, teenagers have little information about sex education making them more prone to adolescent pregnancy.

         What would be the most critical cause of this though is the lack of parental guidance. The way the child is reared greatly affects the child’s mindset towards this issue. Most of the teenagers with family problems divert their need of attention from parents by engaging in sex and vices because they believe that that would be the only way their parents can notice them.

         With all these reasons leading to teenage pregnancy, who do you think would be greatly affected by it? Of course, the teenagers themselves, the baby, the family, and the community. If more teens engage in this kind of life, it would be really hard for them to get an education especially because, simultaneously handling responsibilities, school, and work is not an easy task. And with many adolescents without a job, it would lead to increase of unemployment. Many cases of early pregnancy would also result to the accelerating increase of population. Both scenarios would lead them to poverty. This, can affect their child, lacking support and the opportunity to have education, and would repeat history.

         Would you want to experience this? I think you’d rather not. To prevent this from happening, becoming more responsible and practical with your decisions in life is a start. Be surrounded with friends that are good influences and avoid doing what you know would be bad for you, just to fit in with the society. Parents should also guide their children and make them feel that they are loved. All these can and hopefully will divert themselves from the life of a ‘BATANG-INA.’

Legend of Lianga

               Matag lungsod dunay mga sugilanon. Ang Lianga nahimugso kini tungod sa duha ka binuhat nga nag kahinigugmaay. Duha ka nilalang nga gikan sa lain-laing kultura nga mao si Liangan ug Go. Ang Lianga usa ka malinawon nga lugar nga kanhi gipuy-an sa mga lumad nga nagkinabuhi nga malipayon nga kauban sa ilang mga pamilya. Pagtikad sa yuta ug pagpanagat ang ilang panginabuhi. Sa usa ka Sitio sa Lianga nga gitawag ug Pananag-an o Lawis dunay usa ka tribu nga gipangulohan sa usa ka Datu nga si Datu Angan. Ang maong Datu ug ang iyang asawa nga si Rayna Iyang dunay usa ka anak nga babaye nga si Prinsesa Liangan. Si Liangan usa ka dalaga nga sulondon tungod sa iyang maayong hiyas ug batasan. Malipayon siya uban sa iyang mga higala nga mga dalaga usab sa Tribu.

               Usa ka higayon niana, nakuga ang Tribu tungod sa pag-abot sa mga Tsinong Pirata nga napadpad sa Pananag-an. Usa ka madugo nga panghitabo ang nasaksihan niadtong higayona. Panagbisog batok sa Tribu ug Pirata. Nahimong madaogon ang Tribu sa maong panagsangka ug usa na lamang ka Pirata ang nabuhi ug nagpabiling bihag. Ang maong bihag nga mao si Go nahimong bilanggo sulod sa pipila ka mga higayon. Nahimong saksi si Go sa panaghiusa, kamalinawon ug sa kahapsay nga pamalakad ni Datu Angan sa maong tribu. Sa wala damha, ni usbong ang pagbati ni Go kay Liangan niini. Supak niini ang amahan ni Liangan mao nga sa dugay’ng panahon gitago sa duha ang ilang pagbati.

               Ang tanan dunay kinutuban, sa dihang nahutdan na ug ginhawa ang Datu, nahimong gawasnon si Liangan ug si Go. Nagminyo sila ug nidaghan ang kaliwat ug gitawag nila ang ilang puloy-anan ug LIANGA. Sama sa ubang sugilanon sa gugma, si Liangan ug Go nagkinabuhi nga malipayon uban sa ilang mga anak ug katribu.
