Mom and I have a disagreement. Somehow I recall Ursula died in childbirth? And that's how she's reborn? Am I insane?
She did indeed. I never explicitly say, but the symptoms are untreated preeclampsia.
There’s a rather upsetting overview of how she died in the chapter where she confronts Alys.
She’s reborn because, as Grandmother says, she called out into the dark. And Grandmother had need of someone who could do the work. Thus she wakes up in wee Ursula Mires’s head - who had fallen from a tree and suffered a head wound. Unbeknownst to everyone, it killed her.
There are hints that Andor Mires is very aware his child is not quite the same girl, but that he prayed desperately (to any god) to have his little girl back. That he’d pay any price. Which is why when everyone else was freaked by Ursula, Andors just took it in stride. Any price, he’d said. So he’d pay it and love her for it. I echo the scene with Nyscella and Cedra when she wargs.

one of the more upsetting things you notice if you look back at older european weapons is that nobody fucking named any of the types of flail so you've gotta describe them by appearance every single time

I'm a big fan of wizards-as-programmers, but I think it's so much better when you lean into programming tropes.
A spell the wizard uses to light the group's campfire has an error somewhere in its depths, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The wizard spends a lot of his time trying to track down the exact conditions that cause the failure.
The wizard is attempting to create a new spell that marries two older spells together, but while they were both written within the context of Zephyrus the Starweaver's foundational work, they each used a slightly different version, and untangling the collisions make a short project take months of work.
The wizard has grown too comfortable reusing old spells, and in particular, his teleportation spell keeps finding its components rearranged and remixed, its parts copied into a dozen different places in the spellbook. This is overall not actually a problem per se, but the party's rogue grows a bit concerned when the wizard's "drying spell" seems to just be a special case of teleportation where you teleport five feet to the left and leave the wetness behind.
A wizard is constantly fiddling with his spells, making minor tweaks and changes, getting them easier to cast, with better effects, adding bells and whistles. The "shelter for the night" spell includes a tea kettle that brings itself to a boil at dawn, which the wizard is inordinately pleased with. He reports on efficiency improvements to the indifference of anyone listening.
A different wizard immediately forgets all details of his spells after he's written them. He could not begin to tell you how any of it works, at least not without sitting down for a few hours or days to figure out how he set things up. The point is that it works, and once it does, the wizard can safely stop thinking about it.
Wizards enjoy each other's company, but you must be circumspect about spellwork. Having another wizard look through your spellbook makes you aware of every minor flaw, and you might not be able to answer questions about why a spell was written in a certain way, if you remember at all.
Wizards all have their own preferences as far as which scripts they write in, the formatting of their spellbook, its dimensions and material quality, and of course which famous wizards they've taken the most foundational knowledge from. The enlightened view is that all approaches have their strengths and weaknesses, but this has never stopped anyone from getting into a protracted argument.
Sometimes a wizard will sit down with an ancient tome attempting to find answers to a complicated problem, and finally find someone from across time who was trying to do the same thing, only for the final note to be "nevermind, fixed it".

i really want people to stop writing scientists as awkward, stilted conversationalists who don't understand idioms or emotions and start writing them as depressed alcoholics who swear like sailors unless they're in a specifically academic situation

My experience isn't the be all end all but:
Mainly a discord will be around one author? I'm in two at least, and the more active is mainly discussing the fics of said author, and racooning over spine off ideas or acting like excited kid every time a new chapter drop. We also talk about the universe, and co-create some plot bunny. We also have a fic-recs channel, where you fic Winters of Windows got reced a lot. (To be fair, a lot of us follow said author due to their own fic in GoT)
We do talk avout lot of othefrs things (philosophy, linguistics...) but that because were internationals racoons who love to dissect thing and nerds.
The other one is a lot more focused on the fics they publish and don't have so much discussion topics or animation.
As a whole, I only join fic discord if they are endorsed by it's author, otherwise I will just gush about the authors when reccing the fic, or if someone else brought it up.
I am old and require assistance.
Originally a reply, but I’m so curious.
I require young people, or at least people who are not so dinosaur-coded as I.
The existence of discord servers discussing my work at all is bewildering - I am too old to comprehend this new and mysterious type of fandom where people interact with fanworks in shadowed coteries. Cloisters? Cells?
What is the appeal? In my day, you invaded the replies to the fic in ever nesting comments that became headache-inducing to untangle, but you also copy/pasted some of the really good discourse into a word doc. Or your livejournal.
There are several fics where I am an avid, nigh-on-feral commenter. The communication is surely part of the point of posting fanfiction at all, or else you’d just keep it in your docs forever. Is this out of fashion?
What are these servers like? Is it like a giant room where lots of folk are shouting, the way twitch chat makes me…well, twitch? Or is it like an exclusive book club where you share fics and leave cheese emojis that pair with your selection?

Again. I already say this. I know it's annoying, I know it's tiresome. But spite is all we have left. Don't let the enshitification win. Take these extra steps. If someone need a hand to get thing like freetube or adblocker, I can and will give it. Because spite is all we have left.
Also fuck apps. I want to know what I'm doing, I hate how I need to pass hours in to decipher what do what in an app.
not to enforce gender roles but a computer should NOT fucking have apps okay. if I wanted an app I'd go on my phone my laptop is for Programs. I mean this.
