SHINRAN PUTTING ON A BRAVE FACE
chapter 6
chapter 173
ran having a hard time admitting she's jealous of asami:
chapter 327
just one example of shinichi getting further involved with the black organization and trying to keep haibara out of the loop because he doesn't want to burden her:
there are countless instances of this in the manga and this is something he does with ran as well but for entirely different reasons which i'll get into in another post
chapter 331-337 aka the valentine's arc aka one of gosho's best written arcs
ran is downplaying how much she misses shinichi
and trying so hard to be happy for sonoko and makoto
she successfully fools her best friend
while secretly dying inside...
my girl is so focused on concealing her pain that even as her emotions prevail and she finally starts crying, she continues to put on a fake smile...
and it gets even worse
this is how the post valentine's case starts:
and this is how it ends:
shinichi's sad smile at the end of this case mirrors the smile of ran's chocolate shown at the beginning of the case. even haibara's contemplative gaze is similar. it's a full circle moment and it's incredibly profound because it's so unexpected. gosho tricks us into believing that the chocolate's merely a reflection of ran's emotional state, but it's so much more than that. it's foreshadowing, it's symbolism, it's a tool to contextualize how similarly shinichi and ran cope with pain
this is why i continue to say that gosho's a very successful but underappreciated author - there's so much poetry and depth in his writing but it's easy to miss. it took me more rereads than i'd like to admit to notice this cleverly placed detail
chapter 347-354
ran: starts developing a high fever
also ran:
ran assuring shinichi she's unaware that she unintentionally assisted in a murder and only allowing herself to have an emotional breakdown when she's alone:
chapter 457
shinichi struggling to admit he's missing high school (for obvious reasons)
chapter 499
shinichi refusing to confide in ran about the black organization, despite being on edge:
our observant and caring girl continuing to check in on him and shinichi persistently denying that he's losing it:
chapter 551
chapter 646
chapter 856
our boy just generally doesn't take good care of himself tbh:
chapter 759
(one thing about shinichi and ran is they'd rather DIE than admit they have a fever lmfao)
chapter 725-727
ran trying to play it cool:
also ran:
AND SHE'S BEEN THIS WAY SINCE KINDERGARTEN
chapter 921
in conclusion... they really do share a soul

Do you think Shinichi could ever abandon Ran for another girl?🥲
it's funny, because at some point ran asks herself a similar question:
chapter 305
and i just love the confused look on shinichi's face CAUSE SAME LOL
like this is shinichi kudo we're talking about. he may enjoy the benefits of his desirability, but don't get it twisted, he's absolutely enamored with ran:
chapter 1
more proof:
chapter 173-175
ran is feeling insecure about shinichi's "relationship" with asami and he's EXASPERATED:
because the thought of him entertaining anyone but ran is absolutely unfathomable for my son, which is why he rejects asami the second she confesses her feelings for him:
like i need y'all to understand that this man's sexual orientation isn't straight, it's RAN
chapter 311
two attractive girls in a bikini bump into shinichi and he's pretty much unfazed. he intuitively points at ran to show what his actual type looks like and HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW IT'S HER:
gosho consistently confirms that shinichi has zero interest in other girls:
chapter 876
sera, who has an obvious crush on shinichi, tries to figure out if shinichi likes her back and HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT SHE'S FUCKING TALKING ABOUT LOL
there's only one girl for him and it's ran:
so, to answer your question... do i think that shinichi could ever abandon ran for another girl?

Spoilers about Ran M27:
Ran tells Heiji that there is a night view in Hakodate City called the Million Dollar View. Heiji is surprised and asks Ran about the view: "Is this view higher than Big Ben?"
Ran looks at a nearby clock tower and remembers the scene where Shinichi confesses in front of Big Ben and that Big Ben is her favorite place in the whole world... and suddenly says: "Yeah... the million dollar view here is the best!"
Then she says in her heart: "I apologize, Shinichi... but I have to support Heiji-kun right now."

What do you think of D.C.'s M26, do you think it was just a fire of pairs for us Shinran?
SPOILERS FOR MOVIE 26
i think, in total there are two significant shinran moments worth talking about
i enjoy certain elements of the first scene:
ran impulsively goes after a member of the black organization and puts herself in danger because he poses a threat to haibara. their fight is AMAZING, i love how ran dominates pinga despite him attacking her with a knife
something similar happens in the manga as well (chapter 434), so the writing for ran absolutely tracks here
chianti sees the fight and interferes by attempting to shoot ran - shinichi barely manages to save her in time
here's the thing: i absolutely hate the writers for often reducing ran to a damsel in distress in these movies, that's an issue i'll further analyze in a bit
with that being said, i don't mind shinichi saving ran in this scene. it's an impactful shinran moment, cause so far the writing is similar to the manga
the only difference between chapter 434 and this movie is the fact that shinichi actually sees what's happening and is able to actively protect ran. i don't have a problem with that, because that's what shinichi and ran do - they protect each other.
what i love even more is how shinichi decidedly urges ran to stay put, i think that's also very in character for him:
he wants ran nowhere near the black organization, for very specific reasons that i'll get into another post
so far, this is a well executed scene, right? it's a very realistic, high-stakes moment that we'd expect from the manga. so far, so good, right? RIGHT?!
no. cause this is where the movie writers fuck up:
W H A T
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! SHE ACTUALLY STAYS?! AND WHEN SHIN TELLS HER TO RUN, SHE RUNS?! WHAT?!
this is is supposed be ran??? no fucking way.
my girl is the definition of reckless and stubborn. she's not just the type of person who'll enter a burning house to save a girl she barely knows (chapter 174), she's also the type of person who refuses to waste a single second when human lives are at stake. no matter how much shinichi begs her to stay away.
chapter 640
and she does this in chapter 822 on the mystery train as well: shinichi yells at the detective boys, sonoko and ran, he tells them not to leave their room, no matter what. and ran repeatedly attempts to go against his instructions because she's worried about haibara, despite receiving a text message that she's okay, btw. ran's intuition tells her that something is wrong with haibara, so she's gonna fucking look for haibara!!!
i need the movie writers to understand that my girl is absolutely unhinged. she cares about other people very deeply, to the point where she's incapable of watching from the sidelines as they potentially get hurt
so how would i have written this moment? what would've been a more realistic version of this scene?
shinichi and ran get into an intense fight: shin desperately urges ran to stay put, she refuses to listen. and then there'd be two possible outcomes:
a) ran continues to go after pingo and dies in the process (remember, ran was fully prepared to die for haibara in chapter 434)
b) shinichi realizes that he can't stop ran and offers her a safer way to help. ran accepts and they work together as a team to get haibara back
why didn't the movie writers go for this approach? my theory: they don't want ran to take a bigger role in these movies, so option b) was a no-go for them. obviously it'd make even less sense for them to kill off ran, but like i already explained, there's no way ran would just give up on haibara in that moment
so why include this moment at all? what's the point of starting such a strong scene if you're not gonna progress the plot?
the point is ran being a damsel in distress.
which brings me to the second shinran moment in this movie:
ran goes after pinga again and he kicks her off the balcony, she's about to fall and get hurt
kuroda ends up saving her and shinichi feels inadequate
..............
AGAIN, THERE'S NO PLOT PROGRESSION, THE ONLY POINT OF THIS SCENE IS TO MAKE HER LOOK WEAK
idk who this woman is but this ain't ran
HERE'S RAN FUCKING MOURI FOR Y'ALL
a woman who's consistently depicted as strong, fierce and very capable of protecting herself:
chapter 43
chapter 169
and that's not to say that shinichi doesn't worry about her sometimes, ofc he does:
chapter 493
but that doesn't take away from the fact that she's a fucking badass who can defend herself
and it's not just that she's capable of protecting herself, she protects shinichi too.
chapter 5
..........
it's like the movie writers read the manga, took note of moments where shinichi comes through for ran but completely forgot that it's mutual, they come through for each other:
chapter 389
chapter 1050
the movie staff doesn't get ran, they seem to have no idea how strong or caring she is and i hate how much it's hurting the fandom's perception of her
in conclusion:

Random Things I Love About Kudou Shinichi (an incomplete list)
The fact he is such an absolute simp for Mouri Ran, totally besotted, UTTERLY WHIPPED.
How he is never immune to Mouri Ran's (AKA the love of his life's) beauty. You can literally let him be in the presence of other women in varying state of undress (in a bathroom, on the beach and so on), and he would still notice One Mouri Ran And ONE MOURI RAN ONLY. Also the fact 1) he cannot handle the sight of Ran naked without getting a nosebleed and 2) he can identify Ran's body shape and legs ON SIGHT (both consciously and unconsciously).
Him being an endless well of random facts and knowledge.
How perceptive he can be.
How Shinichi blushes SO MUCH (and especially when Ran is involved).
*YELLS INTO MEGAPHONE AT FULL VOLUME* PROTECTIVENESS
Him being so dedicated to saving lives, him being competent, and trying to give the best possible first aid he can.
Him being the the most excited lil fanboy when it comes to the things he loves (be it soccer or Sherlock Holmes and anything in between).
Him Spouting Poetic Shit like it's nothing
Not Being Able To Shut Up and leave things without Comment TM
The fact he is so good at playing soccer and how playing with a soccer ball can clear his head.
HIS SENSITIVE HEARING AND SENSITIVE LITTLE NOSE.

rewatched the 7th detective conan film and godddddd this was peakkkkkkkk cinema I tell you, peakkkkkkkk and that whole showdown w conan turning back to shinichi to save kazuha bc heiji was in the hospital but heiji escaping to go save kazuha and shinichi and then shinichi running away since he was about to turn back into conan and meeting ran but having to stun her and her thinking it was just a dream but then later at the train station he purposely shook the soda so she'd pull her hankerchief and see it was dirty from when she wiped shinichi's face and telling her he had called him to help heiji, so she knew it wasn't a dream. and ofc heiji fighting off that guy w his cool kendo skills and then everyone fighting the bad guys off w their skills: kazuha w aikido, ran w karate, kogoro w judo, conan using his power kick boots and even shiratori w a stick lol. and then heiji finallyyyyy realising kazuha was that lil girl, his first love when she was singing that song AHHHHHHHHHHH and him smiling fondly and refusing to tell her who that girl was sjsjehsjsjd
and all that WITHOUT ANY BOMBS! new films COULD NEVER like srsly it baffles me that the producers or gosho or anyone don't see how fcking terrible the new stuff is compared to the old ones. so sad.

The one thing that I love the most about these two confessions is how in character they are. Shinichi’s a detective, he’s prone to using words to make an impact and his confession’s very word-y and Ran’s a karate champion and she’s prone to using her body to make an impact and her confession’s in the form of an action, a kiss on the cheek.
