when dealing with humans you must always remember two things. Never underestimate human ingenuity, and never underestimate human stupidity.

Another piece for you to enjoy! So this was inspired by @penitusobscurum who made a post mentioning that this AU had not actually been done for the pairing.
So, I wrote a piece for it! Not my usual repertoire but I’m still somewhat pleased with how it turned out!
Enjoy!

WARNING: VERY ANGST
*TW: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH*
This is VERY Angsty and VERY Sad so PLEASE READ AT YOUR OWN RISK
“I hear them, you know. He whispered, staring at the palms of his hands.
Zelda stills, says nothing.
In the still after the Calamity, they sat in the centre of Hyrule Field. The sky was clear, sun shining down on the pair as they rested. Facing one another, cross-legged in the tall grass, they reminisced about the past. Of friends they had lost, lives they had lived a century before. To Zelda, it was clear Link had suffered significantly and it made her worry. Would she also be the same when she realised the amount of change the world had gone through while she had been keeping Ganon at bay? But, then... The world had been fixed, they had completed their task and now she would have the delight of rebuilding what had been lost.
But right now, Link was opening up to her, and she would listen. To make up for the times she had not.
“At night, they whisper. To me, to others, to each other. I’m not sure if they know I can hear them. But I know they’re real, I felt them.” A shaky hand rested on his chest, clenching the blue fabric of his Champion’s tunic. Link clutched the fabric as though it were keeping the Champions close. “But last night, they bid their dues and… They left.” He murmured.
Zelda reached out, a gentle hand laying on his shoulder. “I’m sure it was not their intention to leave you alone…” She tried to reassure.
Link’s gaze moved up, catching her eyes and Zelda held her breath. Shocking blue eyes were wet with unshed tears, a thin line of red tracing the corners. He was devastated by their loss. Zelda’s hand slid down then to catch his, squeezing it gently. Link’s eyes followed the motion, bottom lip quivering just slightly. He caught it in his teeth, licking the edge before releasing it and sighing again.
“They didn’t say goodbye.. Only ‘see you soon’.” He whispered. “What does that mean?”
Zelda couldn’t answer that question, because now she was asking the same herself. It was an entirely open suggestion, leaving the options open to interpretation. As Link uttered the final question, his eyes let loose the flood of tears. No sound left him, but his shoulder shook and his hand clenched Zelda’s tight. He couldn’t move for a long while, trapped in a dark cycle of mourning. Zelda didn’t attempt to stop him, only offering herself as a form of comfort where she could. A few tears of her own were set free, but she remained ever strong for the knight who had been so brave for her all this time.
It was nightfall by the time Link had agreed to move, though he refused to rest in the castle. Using the Sheikah Slate, he took them both to his home in Hateno. As soon as Zelda had seen the house, she had commented that it had looked just as it had 100 years ago. Link had nearly lost himself over the comment once more, but had managed to steel himself, letting them both inside.
Link had initially refused the bed, but Zelda had insisted on resting in the lower portion of the home, more than happy to gather blankets and make herself a bed. It was, after all, Link’s home and she was merely intruding. Link had reluctantly agreed when the exhaustion hit, dragging himself uup the stairs and falling into the bed shortly after bidding her a good night.
The very next morning, Zelda had woken early, rummaging the house for food to make their breakfast. She spent a good hour working on the breakfast. It was crispy (read: burnt) in places, but it was at least edible. As she re-entered the house, she set the plates on the table and called Link’s name.
No reply.
Confused, but happy to let him rest a little longer, Zelda covered his plate and ate her own breakfast quietly. When an hour had passed and Link had not stirred, she took it upon herself to at least check on the status of the Knight.
Climbing the stairs to the upper floor, she could see the flop of blonde peeking out the top of the blankets and she smiled, reaching out to ruffle his hair.
He was cold.
Zelda’s hand moved then to his cheek, feeling the icy skin there. Her heart stopped.
She pulled the body over, laying Link on his back and pressed at his neck to try and find a pulse, any indicator of life.
She found none.
Looking upon his face however, Zelda couldn’t help the weak gasp, even as the river began to flow from her eyes.
A soft smile lay on frigid lips, face relaxed.
Link was at peace.
---
And scene. Wow, this is one of the saddest things I’ve ever written and I love it that way.
So unfortunately I’ve been having a very hard and emotional week and I’ve needed to write to get those feelings out and this came to me in a spur of the moment. I wrote it in like 20 minutes and it’s only little so I’ve decided not to put it on my AO3.
I think the question always comes up of “What Happens Next” when the hero has completed all of his tasks upon the land. This was one of the many ideas I’ve had.
Enjoy!

Link Post-Calamity Thoughts
I’ve always had this feeling from the game (Breath of the Wild) that Link would be haunted after the Calamity. I think for him, there was a level of guilt that came with being the Hero. Specifically Survivors Guilt. With being the Hero, Link was tasked with defeating the Calamity and saving Hyrule. But it took him two attempts with 100 years of rest to complete. As he gains back his memories during his travels, I feel that Link would have realised exactly how much he had let get destroyed by his failure. Every village, town or garrison that was decimated would leave a stilting recognition of exactly how much had been lost. During his travels, I feel that Link would take great comfort in knowing that the elder of the Zora resented him, as it would be (in his mind) rightfully deserved. After all, he had been the only to let their beloved Princess fall to the calamity. There’s a level of guilt that always sits deep in his chest despite the lack of memories in the beginning, reminding him that he was indeed no hero.
It makes me think that he would push himself far too much to complete his tasks in order to defeat the Calamity as soon as he could. He would force himself to help everyone who asked regardless of the meaninglessness of the tasks he was given. He wanted to atone for his past mistakes and so would make sure anything that was needed, he would provide.
A kid wants to see cool swords? He would find every damn sword and show them to him.
This woman wanted to see the fireflies? He would catch as many as she wanted.
A darner for her sister’s birthday? Girl, you can have as many as you please.
I think when the Calamity is over, Link would disappear. Pray at the Springs for forgiveness from those he failed and then leave. To where, no one knows. But should he be seen again, Link would not ask for anything, only get what he needs and leave again.
That’s my thought, anyways.

Days Off (Revalink Short)
A rare day; free of duties.
Blue eyes scanned the sky; waiting. Blonde hair tied in neat braids, blue tunic swapped for snow-quill tunic and trousers the same. Excitement bubbled in the blonde’s chest as he scanned the horizons, for today he and his beloved could enjoy a relaxed day. It was rare to be able to share time together in which they didn’t have to worry about appearances.
The wind’s changed direction and Link’s head turned to see the source. A small ways away, Revali was swooping down to land beside him. The Rito looked fantastic as always, feathers groomed neatly. Like this, the Rito seemed so much more relaxed, shoulder’s much less tense. Revali’s eyes seemed to also reflect this, a warmness at the corners as the man sauntered closer.
“You’re late.” Link teased when the Rito was close enough to hear.
“Fashionably, I assure you.” Revali quipped back, pressing his forehead to Link in greeting. “You’ve cleaned up remarkably well. I’m almost impressed.”
Link laughed and returned the gesture, fiddling with one of his braids. “It took me all morning to get the comb through it. It better have been worth it.” He grinned, offering his hand to the other. “Shall we go?”
Revali nodded with a small smile, taking his hand.
“We shall.”
