from @sixtyinchesfromcenter and the forthcoming Chicago Archives + Artists Project book: get a look inside @depaulartmuseum Latinx art collection, through interviews with their collection manager David Maruzzella, and artist + writer Natasha Mijares. Interviews by Lauren Iacoponi, photography by me. It’s always a treat to go behind the scenes at any art museum and see into their collection, and great to talk with Natasha and David about their work. David graciously pulled the Graciela Iturbide print for me, when I asked what they had of hers—seen in the last photo. Visit Sixty’s site to read the full interviews, see more of DPAM’s collection, and to pre-order the CA+AP book! (at DePaul Art Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrL232wLtlq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

•a time capsule•
This (accidental?) double exposure was taken by a former student of mine on March 7, 2020, while on a field trip to the Garfield Park Conservatory — one of my last days of teaching in the “before times.”
Many months later, I found this roll of film and processed it.
There’s been a lot of reminiscing at this three year mark of the pandemic shutdowns, and I’ve been overwhelmed with nostalgia for those days before everything changed. Though I’ve continued to teach in the three years since, nothing has been the same. My life and professional path have completely changed.
As I’ve been working on my teaching portfolio — a never-ending and simultaneously urgent task — I’ve been sorting through student work and flooded with memories of the darkroom where I used to teach… those were special times and extremely talented teens.

Igshaan Adams “Desire Lines” exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago.
My favorite of 2022. This work, and his wisdom shared throughout the exhibition, will stay with me for a long, long time.

2022 highlight: teaching an experimental photography program for teens — outside in a tent, with no computers and no running water, in the summer heat. only in hindsight can I say this was fun. there was a lot of sweat and frustrations, but luckily I have become a resourceful and adaptive instructor. and a few veterans of the program really stepped up to help me. we made cyanotypes and solargraphs, we built pinhole cameras and processed paper negatives in our pop-up darkroom, and we went on four field trips… because I love field trips 🙃 these are a small sampling of some portraits I made in our final week, and other highlights. amidst unbelievable circumstances, I’m proud of what these young people created. #analogforever https://www.instagram.com/p/CmsBebiv2_S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
