Today is a continuation sketch to those pages with news from Shikamaru. Special The events take place at Naruto's "funeral" (No body found).
K: "Hey, Sakura… Can you promise me something?"
S: "Yes, what Kakashi-sensei?"
K: "Please don't die, you're my only student left…"
(Kakashi doesn't count Sai because he didn't teach him) Initially I wanted to write "You are the only one left with the old man", but then I changed my mind T_T
S: "Of course, Kakashi-sensei."

That time Kakashi was having flashbacks of Obito and Rin dying while kicking the absolute shit out of fresh academy graduates.
I love these fighting sequences because they're so well animated and they're pretty funny. Big fan of Kakashi fighting with his hands in his pockets.
But... it's so fucking dark.
Kakashi is straight out of ANBU where he's spent ten years processing his trauma by killing people on demand, basically piling more corpses on top of his grief and guilt. "Taking care of future child soldiers will do you good" they said and Kakashi immediately sets out wanting to do anything to prevent his past from repeating itself. He's determined not to let anyone pass who would blindly follow the rules, prioritize their own success or put the mission above their comrades.
Kakashi stands in front of the first group of genin that have been assigned to him and he thinks back to his own bell test. He tells himself that Minato didn't notice the sort of person he was back then. That maybe if Minato had seen the flaws in Kakashi's character and failed him on the test, Obito and Rin would still be alive.
Kakashi accepts his role as jonin sensei but vows to never make that mistake. The mistake of letting someone like him pass.
And he's so, so serious about it. And violent. And scary.
We get to see Guy do the test with his team in the same episode and he's violent too, kicking the kids around until they're limping and bleeding but it's very clear that he's pushing them hard to a point where they'll either give up or step up, motivating them the entire time. Meanwhile, Kakashi's first test goes from him starting out with defensive and evasive moves to something that looks more like violent punishment. The way he stomps that kid in the ribs is so damn brutal. This shift happens right after he visibly flinches and shakes his head, coming out of a flashback.
When he eventually sees the genin turn against each other instead of teaming up against him he's thrown right back to Kannabi bridge, replaying his own childhood mistakes.
He fails the genin teams and he was right to do so. I think Kakashi was right to set the criteria he did for his tests and he didn't make them too tough imo. These tests aren't games. The violence is a part of the society they live in and this is how they make sure people are strong enough to go out and take on dangerous missions. Kakashi was violent while testing but not necessarily more so than other jonin leaders. It's just that I can't recall many instances of Kakashi ever expressing genuine fury like he did when addressing those kids, not even against enemies.
And I think it's pretty clear that this fury is directed at his own childhood self, who he feels shouldn't have been allowed to become a shinobi at all.
And this is one of the reasons why I feel that Kakashi's ANBU arc is way too good to be dismissed as filler because damn, the many, many layers of trauma this character has demand to be properly explored and this arc does that in a great way. There is something in each episode that depicts realistic ways PTSD and grief can manifest themselves.
I only intended to make a few gifs because I thought Kakashi beating up kids while looking cool was fun (and I still think it's fun despite the darkness) but while going through the scene frame by frame it really stood out exactly where there's a change in the level of violence and why. I already interpreted it all as a symptom of his trauma but I had missed that the little frown and headshake was right after a flashback of his hand through Rin's chest, and not just him shaking his head at the genin. This all indicates to me that the overkill violence wasn't deliberate or a representation of his overall state of mind at the time, but that he was actively struggling in that moment to control himself and his projected self loathing.
Ok I'm done. It's a good episode, good arc, great character <3
