And yet in the midst of all that chaos was Mikiya, an alarmingly normal presence in sea of madness. He was so refreshingly and damnably normal, it was no wonder that he had been her and SHIKI’s dream. For as much as she wants to make a face about the whole matter, she’s long come to terms with that fact. This man had long been a core part off her life, both before and after she lost her other self.
Honestly, if this topic of his entering her apartment often was ever posed to the woman–She was likely to either tell her nosy neighbors to mind their own business, or if she’s in a particularly bad mood: To shove it. It wasn’t about to bother her all that much unless Mikiya himself spoke up about the entire situation.
As the other seats himself on the vacant space she’s left on her mattress, her form seemed to visibly relax, and the air lifted just a little in her immediate vicinity.
“–It was okay. I wouldn’t mind eating it again.”
For as dismissive as it sounds, says a lot if Shiki actually ate the whole thing and had something that wasn’t negative to say about it.
THAT WAS A NICE, RESOUNDING YES from Shiki’s side, much to Mikiya’s relief. Touko had commented once on Shiki’s cooking; this isn’t the cheap stuff, and right she was, since Shiki’s incredibly particular with the food she makes and the food that she eats. It comes to Mikiya with relative ease though, as to Shiki’s tastes as well as his own algorithm in picking out new foods for her to try in his daily attempts to stir up her otherwise monotonous bits of living in a quiet apartment.
“That’s a relief,” he chuckled, opting to recline on the bed to get himself a little more comfortable before resting his head on his hand for leverage. He takes a good look at the back of Shiki’s head, with her dark brown hair splayed about despite how short it already seemed, and astoundingly, he’s never thought of it as a completely new experience. Rather, it was natural to sleep by Shiki’s side as he’s always done, and he seamlessly integrated himself into the unspoken routine that they’ve built up together.
“There’s a lot of bubble tea stores and ramen stores opening up lately,” he commented; every word and every nuance meant to send a gentle message despite how simple everything seemed to be. “Maybe this Saturday, we can get some time off to see what we’d like. If you want, you can let me know; ah, but take your time if you need to, alright?”
The unspoken message that was to come across was that Mikiya had recently received his paycheck, and Shiki ought to have too; of course, Mikiya’s always been the one to foot the bills of their outings despite Shiki’s ability to blink and have monetary matters settled in a flash. Oftentimes, he found that he loved treating her out, and these conversations only served to solidify the unspoken bond between them both.

She was hardly sorry for that fact, but Mikiya easily picking up on what she felt or intended through her flippant and rude attitude–Shiki was grateful for it. Even if she was more likely to bite her tongue than to admit it out loud to anyone.
“You’re as easygoing as ever.”
It’s a dry comment, but despite the bite her words always have–There’s barely any hostility behind them. At least when it comes to Mikiya on occasions like these.
“…Yeah, I guess.”
The words leave the woman as a mumble, though she’s somewhat shifted to one side of her bed.
EASYGOING WAS ONE way to put it; hardly anything that ever happens around here during these times were normal, so to say. A breath of fresh air in trying times, an anchor to stop or hold back the utmost of extremes — Mikiya had seen the extraordinary, and while propriety calls for an unmarried man and an unmarried woman to, at all costs, never share a residence together for the night in the same room, this has been Mikiya’s new ordinary ever since Shiki breached the question.
Propriety, in Shiki’s terms, is accepting her suggestions instead of rejecting them for favor of social norms.
He doesn’t talk about how the neighbors might think of her, because it wouldn’t be as if she were to care. He does, though. There are others staying at the block near Shiki though the tenant next door doesn’t seem to ever show up, but there are bound to be families talking about the girl at the end-unit. Still, as Mikiya prepared the futon next to Shiki’s single bed, it’s only then that he noticed the vacant side of her bed and her back turned to him, the sheets pristinely white as if they’ve just been laundered.
A scratch at his cheek, and he smiles before sitting down on the mattress next to her.
“If you don’t mind. I’ve washed up already, so you don’t have to worry about it. By the way, how was the taiyaki that I bought you the other day? It was supposed to be really good....”

“Mikiya, it’s freaking late already–Just stay here for tonight.”
TIME AND TIME again, these visits served to be a constancy for Mikiya — the nights were ever usual to the point where his own apartment became the lonely unit that awaited its owner up to the dead of night. At times, it waited, and he never came until the sun rose; thus with Shiki’s half-hearted invitation ( in which Mikiya himself knows very well that it’s anything but! ), he could only chuckle and acquiesce.
“Aah, you’re right — it’s already 1, isn’t it? I’ll get the futon; is that okay, Shiki?”
