Hey, wanna know the ultimate trick to help you explain alterhumanity?

Saying that you "identify" as something can be really, REALLY hard to grasp for a ton of people, so just use a different phrasing with the same meaning!

For example, if you're in a situation were you have to explain your identity to someone who's a bit less open minded, instead of saying

"I identify as a fox"

just say

"I see myself as a fox" or "I feel more like a fox instead of a human"

That has the exact same meaning, but is much easier to understand!

"Yeah, I just kinda see myself as a fox. When I see images of them I kinda go 'hey! That's me!', and doing things a fox would do makes me happy"

Boom. Your chances of being understood just went up by like 80

A message to the younger members of the community, and those who doubt there place in it:

Beings don't care.

I went to a therian meet up over anthro northwest. And it was NOTHING like the current online spaces, especially all the discourse.

There was no fighting. It was beautiful. Beings were freely using whatever labels they wanted, no one cared "why" someone identified as something, mental, spiritual, physical. Everyone was like "Hey, cool!".

Older folks talked about their time in the community while the younger ones did quads. People howled, played with squeak toys. No one cared. And most importantly, everyone agreed the infighting was pointless.

You WILL be accepted irl. This discourse doesn't matter. You are going to find your beings, and none of these online pissing contests mean anything once you meet others off the screen.

It's a beautiful place out there.

really random and rant-adjacent but i love the concept of transspeciesism so much more than transgenderism because the concept of a species is so much more tangible than the concept of a gender. gender is undefinable and synthetic and honestly pretty pointless in my not-so-humble opinion. but a species? we can place so much more trust in the definition of a species. you can observe a dog and think “i know that that is a dog because it looks like a dog, acts like a dog, came from a dog, etc. it has the dna of a canine, so i can trust that it is a canine.” but you can’t do the same process for any gender. heck, even fictional species are /way/ more concrete than a gender. a gender is too abstract to even assign a solid, widely-accepted definition to, and that frustrates me.

If at least it was at the end of winter so that it would actually be a full season cycle it would make sense but no we celebrate it in the middle of December and like . WHYYY

As someone who has been in the community for 15 years, can I just say I love to see that we're still thriving. I remember times like when tags were always being raided and our family jumping from one tag to another to avoid harassment, everyone rushing to shut off inboxes or leaving the site in general.

But we're still here. The tags are still alive, the community is still alive. Some of the spaces are long dead and gone, many of the accounts are left abandoned for those who find them to peek inside curiously, but we're still here.

No matter the fighting, the drama, the latest discourse, take a moment to look at the friends you've made and the wonderful creatures and beings you've met and seen. Appreciate them. Appreciate yourself for being a part of it.
