Samurai Champloo in Review:
The thing about watching a 20 year old show that somehow is both big yet obscure is it's really hard to find meaningful commentary on... like... all of it and what remains in the Current Conversation is just like... the hip-hop/anachronistic framing and The Action scenes and it's like I HAVE THOUGHTS BUT NOT ENOUGH KNOWLEDGE!!!
I really want to explore the usage of the Ainu/Ryukyuan people and how that ties into the usage of hip-hop and modern subcultures!! I want to talk about the use of traditional folk music along with nujabes beats. I want to talk about the symbolism of Mugen's indestructible sandals that he loses repeatedly but always come back and how that ties into his constant (yet aimless) journey.
I want to talk about their separation at the end and how it fits so well. I want to talk talk about Fuu's agency even when she has none at all and how that ties into the messy yet very up front representation of sex work in the series.
I want to talk about the raw edges of the art work--how even in the blu ray releases have blurs and fuzziness--and how that too works for a series about people out of time. Fuu, Mugen, and Jin were anachronisms as much as the graffiti and rapping was.
Idk!! What a thematically rich text. What an extremely silly show. How offensive, how true it was.
And what weird timing for me to watch this show and accidentally go through Fuu's journey with her dad on the anniversary of my own dad's death, so we both go to experience the "dad as an abstract concept" thing together.
Just!! IDK if i can recommend this show for everyone but it really is just... a strong work of art. A weird one, too.

I gotta say I'm obsessed with what Luffy does to the typical "sunshine" character trope, in that he's an exception to the usual portrayal but perhaps the most true to it of anyone. He's not "sunshine" as in pure niceness and sweetness and innocence. He's sunshine as in The Sun.
He's joy and light and warmth, illuminating all the beauty of the world, but he's also powerful enough to kill and blind and burn. He's an everyday annoyance. He's the strongest force of nature that exists. His happiness shines bright for miles. So does his rage. You could look at him wrong and be screwed up for life. You never want to live without him.
I can't get over this.
