Matteo’s cheeks turned bright red, he was not good at reciving compliments. ”For someone to think that, they need to know me or notice me at least, and I - I’m not exactly someone who stands out” he said shrugging. He didn’t really mind that, sometimes it was a privilage. But it could be lonely at times. “But thank you, Jamie. I appreciate it.” he said smiling at his cousin. “Oh yeah right, you also said that the security guy seemed nice, but there weren’t sparkles in your eyes when you talked about him.” he joked, knowing that Jamie probably really was impressed with Clara, and he could totally understand that. She had this energy that made her connect with every person she meets like right away. It wasn’t something Jamie needed to be embarassed of. “I’m kidding, but I would completely understand if you like her. She’s pretty and she’s nice. It’s hard not to like her. I would say go for it. ”
“Let me give you some wise advice: the people that stand out the most aren’t always the people that are the most liked by others,” Jamie told Matteo, acting as if he was older and full of experience, even though they were the same age. However, Jamie still meant what he was saying. He kindly nodded as Matteo thanked him. “Sparkles in my eyes? That’s not a thing -- you’re making that up,” Jamie said, squinting his eyes at his cousin. Sure, that was the kind of expression he would probably use in one of his poetry pieces, but that didn’t mean it was an actual thing people could objectively detect. It didn’t seem like Matteo was planning on dropping this any time soon. Jamie then bursted out laughing when he told him just to go for it. “Since when are you the person telling other people to take action in relationships? I thought you were the kind of person that waited around for other people to find you and confess their feelings to you. Kind of like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty or something. I never took you for someone that takes the first step.” Then again, Jamie hadn’t seen Matteo in a while. Maybe he didn’t know him as well as he thought.

Clara smiled “You’re welcome.” the blonde really hoped that maybe somehow she’ll be helpful, even if that only meant that he’ll see one friendly face at class, sometimes it was enough, and she hoped that, that was the case right now. “Which means some classes with me, we’ll have a lot of fun.” Clara hoped she wasn’t way too enthusiastic for his taste. “I speak my mind, so if that was the case, I would have told you that you’re annoying, but you’re a nice company.” the girl said and winked at him. Clara also reached out her hand to the boy “Hi, Jamie.” When he asked her about her last name, the blonde smiled widely. She loved talking about her French roots. “It’s French, actually. And I don’t mind at all, I really love talking about it, no one ever listens, but I’m proud of it. My grandma is French, and so from my dad’s side I have French roots.” she explained with a huge cheerful smile. “Your name is not basic, it’s just traditional for your nationality. Every name has a story, and from what I know it’s never basic.”
“Fun,” Jamie repeated as a chuckle escaped his mouth. That wasn’t really the word he would ever use to describe classes, ever. “I hope you realize you’re getting my hopes up an awful lot, and I will be very disappointing if school ends up being just as boring as it was in Manchester,” he added, half-jokingly. He knew having nice classmates already made a big difference. “That’s --- that’s good to know. Honesty’s a great trait!” Right now, it seemed like the girl was full of great traits and bad ones were hard to discover. Jamie nervously cleared his throat when she winked at him and then they were holding hands. Kind of. For a split second. Okay, it was more of a shake and less of a hold, but still. These were the kind of small moments he could write poetry about. “Wow, that’s incredible! Do you go there often? To France?” As Jamie was listening to her passionately talking about her roots, he couldn’t imagine someone would not want to listen to it. “I started to take French last year, actually. The goal is to be able to read my favorite books of French authors in its original language,” Jamie then spoke, “I’m sadly not quite getting there, though.” A smile appeared on his face when Clara told him last names were never basic. He guessed she was right. The story behind the name was a lot more complicated, and his dad didn’t take the Wilson name back up until right before he was born.

She liked teasing him and she took off his hat, sticking out her tongue “Daddy’s hat? He will be proud. And for the record I’m not staring at you, I’m just not an asshole who avoids family at all costs.” Cassie laughed and touched his face, and looked at him kind of disgusted with the whole bloody situation, like she wasn’t touching her brother’s face, but some disgusting frog. "Oh my god, you really think I’m so dumb that I will believe this?” she said, now crossing her arms and shaking her head. “Clumsy? Weren’t you the sporty one? Come on, you’re not an idiot, you can figure out on your own that someone will notice this, you could have at least came up with a decent lie.” the blonde girl said, meaning every word of it. But she wasn’t as mean as he thought, and the fact that he didn’t want to talk about it, made her question it even more and she actually got a bit worried this time. Her face became serious and once again she tried to catch his look. “Come on Caleb…what happened?”
Caleb sighed when Cassie was sticking out her tongue at him. “You can be such a brat sometimes, Cass,” he mumbled, trying his best to steal back the hat from his older sister. “It was just the best thing I could find in my locker,” he responded. Didn’t she get it? He wanted people to let this pass, to pretend like nothing had happened. To not make such a big deal about this. Including his family. Caleb couldn’t help but flinch when she touched his bruises. “Be careful with that! And who says sporty guys can’t be clumsy every once in a while?” he said defensively, realizing he should’ve thought this through way better. At least his sister confronting him about it was a bit less scary than having to explain to his parents what happened. Not that he was scared of them, he really truly wasn’t, but there was nothing Caleb was more scared of than having to disappoint them. “Just... leave me alone, okay? Please. I need to go process my crushed dignity in peace.” If there was a chance for a way out of having to tell Cassie the truth, he would take it.

”I’m as surprised as you are, Jamie.” the boy said and looked down. “I - I mean I didn’t know that someone sees me that way.” he was really happy about that actually. He wasn’t the most talkative guy in the school, or outside the school, and knowing that someone actually noticed him, made him feel kind of seen, something he never had. Not that his parents were bad parents, but he was so different and shy, nothing like them. And they never really understood him.”She’s amazing, really. It’s good that you met someone nice.” Matt said with a shy smile. “But seems like you already know that. You had like 5 minutes conversation with her, and you’re talking about it…” he looked at his watch “Soon will be an hour.” the boy said, jokingly.
A small smile grew on Jamie’s face when his nephew gave him the most typical humble reaction. “I’m sure she’s not the only one out there thinking that,” he said, pretty confidently. He was sure most people agreed Matteo was one of the most decent people in school. “And I’m not only saying that ‘cause you’re family, promise.” His smile got bigger when he thought back about his first meeting with Clara. He must’ve met a dozen other people since then, but no one had made an impact on him quite like she did. “Yeah, me too...” he nodded. However, his expression transformed from dreamy to offended in seconds, when Matteo reminded him he had been talking about the girl for a long time. “Hey!” Jamie shouted, as he playfully gave him a push. “I just wasn’t expecting people to be so nice out here, that’s all. I just like some nice old-fashioned human decency, that’s all.”

Darn it. His mission of avoiding his sisters for the day was already ruined when Cassie noticed him walking by. Why did he think wearing one of his dad’s old baseball hats was going to cover up his black eye and bruised nose? To Cassie, nothing went unnoticed. “Stop staring at me,” Caleb said with an agitated voice. He knew his sister probably would never worry about him, at least not as much as Clara would. But still, there was always the small chance she was going to use this against him one day. “Nothing happened, okay? I fell and hit my head against the pavement. It was a stupid accident. You know how clumsy I get,” Caleb lied, trying to avoid looking in Cassie’s eyes.
Not exactly the thing Cassie wanted to wintess, but saying that she didn’t have fun was going to be a big fat lie. “Ouch, what the hell happened to you?” she asked, pretending to be worried. Was she the only person on her right mind in this so called school, or were everyone else having a bad day. Honestly it looked kind of bad, so maybe it wasn’t the time for her humor, that not everyone found as funny as she did. “Did you got into a fight or you were hit by a car? Cause your eye is kind of walking 2 meters ahead of you.”

Jamie scoffed because Matteo didn’t believe he was telling the truth. “I know I say crazy things way more often than I can count, but this time I’m being dead serious! This girl didn’t have anything but nice things to say about you. She even said she thought you’re a sunshine. After a while I honestly wondered if we were talking about the same person,” he continued, referring to the first conversation he had with Clara. It was a conversation that hadn’t left his mind since it happened, and so he ended up telling his cousin about it.
”I really hope that you’re aware of the things you’re saying, cause otherwise it would be so embarassing.”

Clara shook her head and smiled “You can always count on me If you need help around here.” He was nice, he seemed a little shy though, but she couldn’t blame him. New place, new people, new everything, it probably was a lot. “I know him, actually, we’re in the same class. Sits behind me.“ the girl said, remembering how nice Matteo actually was. He was helpful and friendly, once he gets to know someone. “Yeah, he’s not a people’s person, but he’s a sunshine.” Clara explained. “You didn’t waste my time, I enjoyed the conversation actually. And it’s really nice to meet you, Jamie Wilson. I’m Clara. Clara Coupeau.”
Jamie tried his best not to grin foolishly when Clara told him he can count on her. Props for him for picking out someone to start a conversation with who didn’t only seem like one of the kindest, but also one of the most generous people in school. “I will make sure to keep that in mind. Thanks!” he answered her genuinely. Jamie thought, in the least creepy way possible, how was kind of nice to know they would see each other around after this. It was good to have at least one acquaintance that wasn’t family. “Ah, look at that! I should’ve known. I’m sure him and I are in some of the same classes, too,” he commented. Oh man, when Matteo finds out a cute girl has been gushing about him and calling him a sunshine behind his back, he’s going to freak. “I mean, yeah, I already figured, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t being annoying or something,” he continued, half-jokingly. Seconds later, he learned her name: Clara. He couldn’t really explain why, but the name fit the girl perfectly. “Hi, Clara,” he said while reaching out his hand. “My last name sounds so basic compared to yours,” Jamie remarked. “Is it English? If you don’t mind me asking...”

A soft laugh escaped Clara’s lips. For some reason she found it very amusing that he just hit her with so many facts, but totally forgot to introduce himself. “Manchester? I’ve heard that the weather there is nothing like here. I guess it will be a bit more hard for you to get used to the city. It’s nothing like UK, I gurantee you.” she explained with a smile. “It sure sounds interesting and I hope you’d like it here. Oh, your cousin? Is he a student here, I may know him.” the blonde asked and raised her eyebrow. She kind of ignored his accent comment earlier, but now she smiled and nodded “Yeah, I noticed the accent, but the thing I didn’t catch was your name…”
“That sounds like legit information,” Jamie said with a nod, thinking back about all the rain they got back in the UK. Ever since he arrived here, the sun hadn’t stopped shining. “At least there’s still four seasons here just like back home. It will always take some getting used to but I’m sure it won’t be that hard.” When she wondered if she knew who his cousin was, Jamie couldn’t help but smirk. “Matteo Carter is his name. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had never heard of him before -- I don’t think he’s such a people’s person. If he hasn’t changed drastically since I’ve last seen him, at least.” Jamie nervously scratched the back of his neck when he realized he hadn’t even introduced himself yet. “Oh yeah, right. I’m Jamie Wilson, it’s nice to meet you! I’m sorry if I’ve wasted your time by rambling on -- I’m sure you have dozens of better things to do right now.”

“Dilemma of the day: how do you tell your enthusiastic-crazy-athletic-high-school-star-football-player-dad that dreams about you following his footsteps you’d rather not try out for the football team, without breaking his heart in a million tiny pieces?” Caleb and his dad had always been super close, and the sixteen year-old hated the thought of ever coming close to disappointing him. He hated it so much he was literally asking anyone for advice at this point, stranger or not.

Jamie was walking through the hallway as he recognized an incredibly familiar voice coming from the other side. He really thought he was going crazy for a second, because the voice sounded exactly like his little sister, it had just the right amount of sass in it. But that was impossible, his sister was back in Manchester with their parents. The boy turned around and then was surprised by the sight of a tiny girl with a blonde ponytail, telling off some unknown guy. “Amelia? What the heck are you doing out here?” Jamie asked her, completely ignoring the fact that they had company.
”I’m as nice as one can be.” the blonde said with a bow. “And it’s not Goldilocks, it’s Amelia. Thank you very much.” oh bloody hell, this place was even worse than Manchester.

Clara smiled and nodded “At least you know how to apologize, so I’ll take it as a good trait.“ He was right, it wasn’t a good excuse, but she really appreciated when someone knew when he’s wrong and when that someone wasn’t too egocentric to say “sorry”. “Apology accepted.” she looked at the boy, curious “Long flight from where?” the blonde asked.
Jamie’s mouth curled up into a smile, almost in sync with the girl. He was glad he saved his first interaction in his new school from being a disaster. “Good,” he responded, putting a lock of his medium-long hair behind his ear. His parents for sure didn’t raise him to be uncivilized. “I’m from Manchester, UK actually. Born and raised. I don’t know if you can tell by my accent,” he explained, a chuckle escaping his lips. “I applied for an exchange program here. I was kind of interested in getting to know more of the world, which is why going to school abroad looked like fun. And it’s not like I don’t know anyone here -- I’m staying at my cousin’s house, which makes the step of attending school faraway from home feel less freaky and huge.”
