In necessary disruption, art emerges. Art is the mirror that reveals humanity. It is the critical thinkers, the poets, the great debaters, the photographers, the painters, the soul singers, problem solvers, the creatives-- who narrate the change we must be brave enough to face. Thanks WhatWeekly for publishing my experience working in the arts and engaging community last year. I learned a great deal from Sheila Pree Bright, Devin Allen, Barbara Paca and JC Faulk. I appreciate each one of you I met through these intersections. This essay is dedicated to the Renaissance before us and the one happening now. Read by following the link:

Giving thanks to the elders, who collected art and culture. Mr. Paul R.Jones was the first African American Art Collector I met. He was known for his extensive collection and became a leader in his pursuit. As a man, who grew up during the height of Jim Crow, earning titles such as Politician, Entrepreneur and friend to many-- his vision was to make African American art an integral part of American Art. I know his spirit is proud to see the opening of @nmaahc in the nation's capital. Rest in Power Father Paul. When I have the opportunity to tour it. I will say your name. #historymaker #art #culture #collector #flashbackfriday

"I use poses and forms which historically have been used to highlight women’s beauty, showing beauty, but also truth that can seem confrontational to some-- who do not want to see women live painful realities. For many women, the struggle to obtain freedom, demand equality and speak truth has often been met with resistance and/or violent retaliation on all fronts – socially, politically and economically." -Kathleen Flynn @kathleenrocksworlds (at Museum of Art and Origins)

Met Michael A. Wood, Jr. this evening at a showing of ABC Australia's documentary of the #BlackLivesMatter movement in Baltimore and Chicago. Michael is rare. He is a former Baltimore police officer, who speaks out against the systematic corruption of targeting and police brutality. It takes the support of our shared communities to stand for our human decency and protection of humanity. He is pictured with community organizer, JC Faulk @endingitnow. Both are featured in the documentary. #abc #activism (at Baltimore, Maryland)

Took a break to revisit the interview I had in April 2003 with Sam Sarpong. The actor and model discussed how legends like Sidney Portier and Denzel Washington had to pave their way as actors, considering Hollywood has limited roles and range for African American males. Sam certainly found his ways in doors and experienced opportunities others have hoped for. As I reflect back, I'm thankful for my passion to create cultural productions and research the histories of my culture. Encouraging my creative alliances to remain anchored in passion and pursuits. There is vast content to be embraced and infinite possibilities for fresh voices. Keep the path. Let's fuel each other. RIP @mrsamsarpong.
