What Yuri Kuma Arashi Was Really About & Why It Will Still Be Worth Talking About In 10 Years

Yuri Kuma Arashi was weird, wasn’t it? You’d expect that from Ikuhara, but … just trying to describe what Yuri Kuma Arashi was about to someone is a struggle. You could explain the premise, that a long time ago the asteroid Kumaria exploded and all the bears rose up to fight the humans, but is that a good description of the show? I don’t really think so. It doesn’t tell you anything important except that Yuri Kuma Arashi was wacky. You’re almost better off telling someone, “Ikuhara made a show whose title translates to ‘Lesbian Bear Storm.’ Are you in or out?”

Some people are going to dislike the show for the fan service, but if that’s not a deal breaker and you are into yuri, Ikuhara, or brain teaser levels of symbolism, Yuri Kuma Arashi should be a home run for you. Even if you’re unsure whether you’ll enjoy it, I find myself recommending it on its artistic merit alone: it’s thought provoking and has excellent artistic composition. It makes a lot of illustrations of and statements on how lesbians are portrayed in media. In ten years Yuri Kuma Arashi will still be worth watching for its message, and for how unique and surprisingly deep and nuanced it was.

But… what was Yuri Kuma Arashi about…?

I could go on about how Sumika and Kureha’s relationship was a symbol for the Maria-sama ga Miteru Class S genre of yuri storytelling, or how Ginko, Lulu and the other bears by contrast are more akin to the male targeted yuri shows like Strawberry Panic…

… I could go on about the fact that the first line we hear from a male voice in the series asks a lesbian a question that recurs repeatedly: “Is your love real?” Or about how a male run group seems to have the authority to decide whether lesbianism is allowed to happen or not.

But what Yuri Kuma Arashi was really about was simultaneously the vilification of prejudice, hate and conformism, and the heroization of love and being true to yourself, especially for LGBT community.

I’ll explain why under the cut, but be warned, I have to spoil Yuri Kuma Arashi’s ending to do it.

While I'm having Thoughts™ about Digimon Adventure

Anime has long had an issue of featuring a "joke" regarding older/adult men lusting after young/underage girls

It's really gross

And that joke kinda existed in Digimon Adventure, with Mimi - the youngest girl before Kari joins the cast - being the subject of constant romantic advances from Numemon and Sukamon ("Adult" level Digimon).

But I just realised Digimon did something kinda subversive and genuinely funny about it?

It's always Numemon and Sukamon because only gross pieces of shit are attracted to underage girls.

Feels like kind of a "fuck you" to that "joke" and to every anime writer who includes "fanservice" of underage girls in their show.
