Like I think to a certain extent they were both using each other in the beginning, Nott needed a Wizard and Caleb needed someone (anyone) by his side, both as like someone who's sneaky and quick and won't go down in one hit but also someone to watch his back when he gets stuck in his head

And I think he's having doubts about being as past that as he thought they were...

Like tbc I def think they're well past that, like those two are inseparable and probably codependent but this reveal has to hurt like damn I'm not Caleb and I'm emotionally devastated like I know she didn't actually really mean for Caleb to be her Replacement Boy but like it'd be hard not to feel like it

Also like it's been clear for a while that Nott loves Caleb but also she specifically Needs him for something (transforming her back) but judging by the slightly sad/hurt confusion on his face I don't think Caleb knew that...
