something i never understood is the thoughtless praise idols get for being songwriters from people who don’t even speak the language. let’s just assume it’s not only because of the fact they took part in writing the lyrics (another funny thing is they’ll get credited even if they write only one line). “they write their own songs” but are they good writers? there are aspects of the language a translation cannot convey. it’s hard to tell if the syntax is right originally. if the expressions used are great or just good. the semantics change. so, so much context is taken away from us. not to mention sometimes a translation exceeds the original. how can you tell if the songwriting deserves praise? i guess the general idea stays the same, but this is a really small piece of the whole thing.
