Katy Perry lends her voice for Smurfette in ‘The Smurfs’
On July 29, 2011 audiences will hear Katy Perry’s voice in a whole new way: as the voice of Smurfette in ‘The Smurfs’ co-starring with Neil Patrick Harris.
Perry was not only involved in providing the voice for Smurfette, but says that she helped with the development of her character as well. “When I’m doing the voice for Smurfette it’s really interesting because I get to be a part of creating her character and adding little nuances to her who I guess she is on the big screen. The voice is basically my voice but throw some rocks in it. Just a little bit rockier.”
Perry also believes that the film will be a big hit with kids and adults alike. “It’s a positive story and it has a sweet side and there’s a great message,” Perry says. “It’s one of those you can’t go wrong type of films. I think it’s very family oriented and that’s why I wanted to be a part of it.”

Katy Perry postpones Allstate Arena show due to food poisoning.aty
Katy Perry’s Friday concert at the Allstate Arena has been posponed due to “an attack of food poisoning leading to severe dehydration,” promoter Jam Production said in a release Friday. She also delayed her Saturday concert at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center.
The Chicago show has been rescheduled to Aug. 21 and the St. Paul show to Aug. 23 in the same arenas. All tickets purchased will be honored. Refunds will be available at the original point of purchase.
The press release quoted Perry as saying: “I apologize to my fans in Chicago and the Twin Cities for not being able to perform this weekend, but I am going to return in a few weeks to give them the very best show ever!“
And she later wrote on her official twitter page the following message: Chicago and St. Paul – I’m so sorry to have to postpone today and tomorrow’s shows. But I’ll be back 8/21 (CHI) and 8/23 (St. Paul)!
Get better, Katy Perry!

Katy Perry interview for ‘The Smurfs’ 3D movie
The Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, ‘The Smurfs.’ When the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) chases the Smurfs out of their village, through a magical portal, and into our world..., they land in the middle of New York’s Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down. ‘The Smurfs’ comes to theaters July 29th and stars Sofía Vergara, Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Anton Yelchin, Alan Cumming, Paul Reubens, Katy Perry and Hank Azaria. In the film Katy Perry voices Smurfette, check out what she had to say about the film in a quick interview below.
# What was it like voicing and creating Smurfette?
Katy Perry: When I was doing the voice for Smurfette it was really interesting because I got to be a part of creating her character, adding little nuances to who she is on the big screen, that’s really fun. I liked taking little liberties here and there. It’s basically my voice, but throwing some rocks into it, just a little bit rockier, I guess you would say, it’s like I had too many cups of coffee in one day. It was really fun though because I got to see the evolution of the cartoons from sketches, to kind of fake moving cartoons to “oh my gosh, they’re in 3D!” It was really nice to be there from the beginning, feeling like I was apart of moulding who Smurfette is in this film.
# How was the process of seeing the animation and recording your voice?
Katy Perry: When you are in the booth recording, half of the time you get to see a picture, so you get to see a rough cut, you get to see a story board, some rough animation. Towards the end of recordings I saw almost quite there animation, it was blowing my mind because you get so used to these sketches and working off of that (laughs). You’re like, “ooohhhhhh, I really really hope this is going to be awesome.” Then when you see the final animation I thought, “oh my gosh, these people must have worked so hard, this must have been so time consuming, it looks incredible.” It’s a really beautiful representation of the characters, especially in a live action setting.
# What do you feel is the appeal to audiences with this film?
Katy Perry: It’s a great film that all ages can enjoy. I really feel like this film caters to the young person inside of you, because the Smurfs show existed at a different time, a lot of those kids have grown up, you get those grownups now who want to reminisce, have that familiar feeling of when they were a kid watching Smurfs. And now we get to introduce it to a whole new audience as well. There’s no sneaky innuendo’s or sort of taboo things, it’s a positive story, it has a sweet side, there’s a great message. It’s just one of those ‘you can’t go wrong’ type of films, it’s very family orientated.

Katy Perry nears Michael Jackson No. 1s record
To say that Katy Perry has been on a roll lately would be a grand understatement. But now, the star is nearing a feat only previously achieved by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Perry’s latest single from her “Teenage Dream” album, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” flies 31-4. As Gary Trust notes in today’s Chart Beat column, if it hits No. 1 on the Hot 100, Perry will become just the second act — and first woman — to score five No. 1s from one album in the chart’ 52-year history, as “California Gurls,” the title cut, “Firework” and “E.T.” all previously reigned. Only Michael Jackson, with his 1987 set “Bad,” has so far collected five Hot 100 No. 1s from one album release.
In other impressive and unprecedented Perry chart news, she was already the only artist with four 4-million-selling downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As of this week, Perry pulls further ahead of the pack as the only artist with a whopping five.
“E.T.,” which topped the Hot 100 for five weeks beginning April 9, surpasses the 4-million mark in download sales, according to SoundScan (4.06 million). Perry is now the only act to have five songs sell more than 4-million each. (Lady Gaga is next with three 4-million-sellers).
She previously hit the 4-million mark with “Hot N Cold” (4.91 million), “Firework” (4.53 million), “I Kissed a Girl” (4.07 million) and “California Gurls” (4.88 million).
More evidence of Perry’s power? Adding to the pileup of her staggering sales and chart statistics, “E.T.” became the top-selling download of 2011 as of the week ending May 1, when it overtook Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You (F**k You).”

Last Friday Night enters to the top five on Billboard HOT 100
Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” rockets into the top five. Replacing Adele’s “Rolling In the Deep” at the Digital Songs summit, Perry’s “Friday” blasts 28-1 (235,000, up 259%). The song soars following the June 13 premiere of its star-studded video, whose guests include Rebecca Black, Hanson, Corey Feldman, Kenny G and Debbie Gibson. The clip has already netted 28.6 million YouTube views.
As Perry’s album “Teenage Dream” had become the only album to generate four Digital Songs No. 1s – “California Gurls,” featuring Snoop Dogg, the title cut, “Firework” and “E.T.,” featuring Kanye West – the set makes further history as the only release to yield a quintet of toppers.
Airplay is also spurring the fast Hot 100 flight of “Friday,” which jumps 40-21 in its second week on Radio Songs (44 million, up 57%). The song charges 25-13 as the Greatest Gainer on Pop Songs and enters Adult Pop Songs at No. 34. On the Hot 100, “Friday” flies 31-4 as the chart’s Digital Gainer.
Perry’s “E.T.” dips 4-5 on the Hot 100. With “Friday” one spot above, Perry is the first artist this year to place two titles in the top five simultaneously as a lead act.

Katy Perry covers ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine July
‘When I was a kid, I asked questions about my faith. Now I’m asking questions about the world’ In the new issue of Rolling Stone, on stands and in the digital archive on June 24th, Katy Perry takes contributing editor Erik Hedegaard backstage at the kick-off of her California Dreams Tour. Between the elaborate rehearsals and three-hour make-up sessions, Perry reveals that she’s recently undergone a political awakening. “It just feels like the thing running our country is a bank, money,” she says. “I know it sounds like an intense viewpoint, but I’m only slowly but surely getting the wool taken off my eyes. When I was a kid, I asked questions about my faith. Now I’m asking questions about the world.” She continues: “I think we are largely in desperate need of revolutionary change in the way our mindset is. Our priority is fame, and people’s wellness is way low. I saw this knowing full well that I’m a part of the problem. I’m playing the game, though I am trying to reroute. Anyway, not to get all politically divulging and introspective, but the fact that America doesn’t have free health care drives me fucking absolutely crazy, and is so wrong.” It took Perry a while to learn to embrace her body. “I started praying for [breasts] when I was, like, 11,” she says. “And God answered that prayer above and beyond, by, like, 100 times, until I was like, ‘Please, stop, God. I can’t see my feet anymore. Please stop!’ I was a lot more rectangular then. I didn’t understand my body. Someone in sixth grade called me ‘Over-the-shoulder boulder holder.’ I didn’t know I could use them. So, what I did was, I started taping them down. How long did I tape them down for? Probably until I was about 19. And, no, I don’t have any psychological pain because of it.” • Perry is the first artist to ever have at least one song ranked in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 for a full year – but she remains a polarizing figure. “Whenever people ask me about having bad reviews, I’m like, ‘Have you seen the run I’ve had? Have you see the numbers?’” she says. “Numbers do not lie!” At the same time, she recognizes the limitations of pop music. “I’m not a dummy,” she says. “I know ‘California Gurls’ isn’t going to save the world. But I got a lot of heart from my upbringing and I put a lot of heart in my songs.” • She’s recently become obsessed with the History Channel show Ancient Aliens. “Oh my God,” she says. “When it talks about the sky people , how everyone comes from the sky and how the Pyramids were used for star observations, it’s too much for me. It all seems to connect the dots. It’s blowing my mind.”

LFN video director Marc Klasfeld, describes the concept behind the clip as “bold”
‘I really hope other artists take Katy’s lead and try to not take themselves so seriously,’ director Marc Klasfeld tells MTV News. There are many stars in Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” video, but perhaps none as sparkling as Katy herself, who director Marc Klasfeld said had fun playing dorky Kathy Beth Terry.
“I thought it was really bold of Katy, who is such a sex symbol, to try something like this, but I also knew it would be received very well if done right. I worked with Katy on 3OH!3′s ‘Starstrukk’ and knew she could pull off comedy. And she is actually an incredible actress who dove into this Kathy Beth role with reckless abandon,” he told MTV News about the colorful romp. “I really hope other artists take Katy’s lead and try to not take themselves so seriously all the time. Sometimes, fun can be cool too.”
Speaking of fun, Hanson, Kenny G and two “Glee” stars are hardly the only celebs that made the final cut, Klasfeld shares. “One more random celebrity fact that added to the video is that the video was shot at ['Dukes of Hazzard' actor] John Schneider’s house,” he revealed. “That added a special spirit to the piece. He’s got a pretty wicked house with all this classic ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ stuff up on the walls. John and his family were away for the weekend, thankfully, ’cause the house really did look trashed when we were shooting. We had a great art department who cleaned it up though and made it look brand-new.”
Klasfeld was asked to turn Perry’s goofy Teen Choice Awards character into the lead for the video, and from there it all took off. “Katy and Danny Lockwood at Katy’s label collaborated with me and really pushed hard to make this a very special video. Having done many comedic music videos, I was immediately into it and wrote something up,” he said. “With Katy having four #1 singles, I wanted to make this fifth [single] into an event like Michael Jackson used to do.
“The inspiration was obviously John Hughes, but also a lot of my own music videos that I did for Alien Ant Farm, Sum 41, Nelly and others,” he continued. “I always enjoy making these pop-culture mash-ups where comedy and random celebrities get mixed with the music into this brand-new thing.”

Katy Perry prays before gigs
Pop star Katy Perry has revealed that she always says a prayer before she goes onstage. The Firework singer, who is currently on her California Dreams world tour, says she prepares for gigs by saying a prayer with her crew. She told Entertainment Weekly magazine: "I have this little box of prayers, but they're very small, simple one-line prayers, and I pull them out and read them out loud. "Everybody either agrees or disagrees with them, and then we just put our hands in a pile and dedicate the show to something funny or stupid." The 26-year-old star, who is married to British comedian Russell Brand, added: "When we were in Nottingham, we dedicated the show to Robin Hood."
